Insurance time again

That time of year again!
I have renewed the tranny with AIB again this year and also Ratbag for the first time.
Tranny at £200 and Ratbag at £109. Both f/c and 3000 miles on Ratbag.
So can't afford to eat this month.

Keep a look out for pheasants too Gary, there are plenty about atm and they are daft as brush. Bag a few and stick them in Dave's freezer!!! All your need then is a pheasant plucker and there are a few of them in the BKCC!

Just got my quote. The renewal (via Frank Pickles) is £108 but that includes legal protection at £10 that is optional so could drop to £98.
AIB came in at £97.70 (no legal protection I think - forgot to ask). Remarkably similar!! Both fully comp, garaged, 3k mile limit. Excess is only £50 on the FP one but is £100 on the AIB one so for the extra 30p probably best to go with Mr Pickles.

Can't think why Ratbag would be more than the Spyder unless its just postcode snobbery - Yate is such a posh area don't you know!

Adrian Flux got back to me offering to undercut AIB, but I had made my decision which was not only based on cost but also on good service. I have had the trannybus with AIB over the last year and they were extremely helpful.

It turns out the AIB quote was including legal protection too so effectively £10 cheaper so I've gone with AIB. Result! Changing the engine to the 1.8 doesn't add any money but there would have been a £15 admin cost to change it later so it'll be ensured as a 1.8 even if it stays 1.6 for a while! They say that's okay.

I'm with AIB also Dave, they have been very good with me so far. They did want to charge me a £20 admin fee when I changed the number plate over. The solution was very simple, I told them point blank I would not pay it. After a 20 second 'on hold' moment they kindy waived the fee

I've just bought a number plate for the GTM. I asked AIB if there would be an admin fee to change it (it is supposed to be a Christmas prezzie from SWMBO) - they said it would be £15 (so don't know why yours would be £20?) but I've decided to change it onto the car on 1st Nov - the day the insurance starts - so no admin fee and I get my Christmas prezzie early. Win Win!!

So, in a couple of weeks she'll no longer be M115 TAB and will become H18 GTM.

I wanted an H reg because it will hopefully take away the confusion on emissions tests at MOT time. It seems the emissions data recorded at the SVA should have been put on the V5 but never was. I know the emissions was tested at the SVA 'cos there is a fail notice in the pack of papers and the only fail point was emissions. I've got a receipt for a specialist re-setting the emissions mapping and the re-book appointment but not the SVA pass form - presumably they get sent of to DVLA? Anyway, talking to an MOT tester he said he wasn't sure how to test it because the V5 records the car as 2004 (so needs a cat test) but the age related plate showed it as 1994 (still needs a cat test) but he said it should have the actual emissions figures to test it to on the V5 if it was SVA'd as age related (i.e. not new or q plate). He said if it was on an H plate or older he (and he thought most other testers) would take that as enough to judge it on the pre-'92 emissions.

Either way I think a 3 on 3 will look good on the back square plate and it'll be good to have a GTM reg!

It's because they make it up as they go along Dave! I asked them about changing the plate 2 weeks before and they guy said no charge. They don't make much on each policy so they do try to make it up on 'admin' charges. I have dated quite a few girls who worked in Insurance (about 7 if my memory is correct  ) so I used to hear this sort of thing all the time!

To be fair these guys are brokers not insurance companies and they are trying to make a living as we all are. The admin involved in changing reg numbers on your policies is probably minimal, but a £15 -£20 fee to do it (and give you what you want) is minimal too. It is barely a couple of beers and a takeaway so I don't really begrudge that.

When I first insured the trannybus, my insurance from my previous car had 2 months to go before it expired. The insurer wanted £50 to end the policy early, I declined and just let the policy expire at no cost. Trouble is they refused to give me 'proof of NCB' until the policy ended. 

However Darren at AIB trusted me to send the NCB proof as and when I recieved it. I did so and everything was fine. He also gave me the details I needed to get the trannybus on to the duelfuel database, which lowered my premium. He gave good service, which is why I have 2 vehicles insured with them.

I agree Dave, Darren and the other staff there have given me excellent service which I why I have three cars insured with them (not tried them for tin tops yet though) I still don't think £20 to change a reg number is reasonable though thb.
