Title: Thinking of booking Castle Combe just for us.
Post by: Moleman on 30, March, 2015, 10:25:21 PM
I know I haven't had a lot of commitment from hardly anybody track days this year so this may be dead in the water before it starts.

Me & a mate are thinking of booking Castle Combe race circuit for just 22 - 25 of us on a open pit forum. Castle combe would run the circuit but we would be in charge. We hope by just having people we know with only 22 cars in total will encourage people who hasn't done one before to give it a go as we won't have any idiot's out there to worry about.

It would be on Monday 17th August at a cost of £200 each for the day. But extra drivers & passengers will be free so you could share the cost with a friend who can also give it a go with as many friends having passenger rides for free & with only 22 cars for the day you will get plenty of miles on the track so when you add this up it could work out not bad value up to other track days.

You will still have to abide by all the normal rules & sound test of 100db at 3/4 rev's.

There will only by friendly people out on track who will also be happy to help out & give you friendly advice if you want it.  :)

To book this I will need a strong commitment pretty soon & when we have enough I will need the money pretty soon so we can book the circuit, but unlike most track days if you do need to pull out closer to the date we will do our best to get someone to replace you & if we do you will get a full refund.  8)

So what do you think? I have 5 cars so far so I just need 17 more.

That does sound like a good idea.

It could be a try-out for first timers and passengers rides for the future drivers and there would be plenty of potential for spectators at Quarry.

I am interested if I can make the date.

I'm interested but I can't give a firm commitment right now. Depends when I decide to fit the VVC engine - the car might be in bits!

Colin, I am bucking the trend.
Definite for me, not often you get the chance for an open pit lane without the threat of a subaru driving over the top of you. Great idea, count me in.

.....and talking of Subaru's, I was chatting to my mate at work today who knows combe very well and has helped out on lots of charity rides there, he said he would be a definite if he was allowed and there was a space.

I won't rule him out as yet mate. You will have to vouch for him though as I want this to be a friendly track day so we get a lot of first time people who may not have done one before & would like to give it a go that's why I'm trying to get people I know & from the club so I can take away any idiots that might spoil it for the people new to the track.  ;D

So far I have Moleman   =    Definite

Colin, that's a great idea for the less experienced guys, by the time you've done some parade laps and a couple of sessions for the new guys the first hour would be gone. The rest of us are still going to get more than enough track time with the limited numbers, so lets hope it might encourage a few more to join in. I remember bricking it at my first couple of track days, there's not just the driving to contend with, you're never really sure how well your car is going cope with the extra stresses - it's a lot to take in without a load of nutters flying all around you ;D

Thanks for that mate that is really helpful but it is looking like we will have enough but if this changes I will let you know as I have to allow for the other people that are going from my mates side that I do track days with.  :)

Once I have enough we will be collecting the money & it will be done on a first pay first on the list bases so please watch this space.

I will hold a reserve list so if someone has to pull out then they will replace them & the other person will get their money back.

Smudge, don't worry I have never driven Combe and have only done a couple of track days before and so you are not alone. Coupled with that the last one I did immediately brought to attention that my brakes had an imbalance which meant I was pretty slow at times.  Everyone was accommodating, or at least as far as I was aware they were :D

Everyone has to start somewhere and ultimately it ain't a race.

Everybody pays the same amount for the day, so everyone has equal right to be out there having fun, whatever speed they're doing - FUN being the operative word. I hope you newer guys can make it, it's shaping up to be a great day out 8)

I nearly have enough now as my mate has a few going as well now.

So it will be on a first pay first on the list with a reserve list afterwards in case someone has to pull out so we can refund them & the other person can take there place.

I would like a Bank transfer if possible as I will be paying it all in one go.
Thanks Colin.

My friend, who is the main contact with Castle Combe, has 13 going so far so that means only 12 spaces left. So first to pay first on the list.

Paid & definitely going so far are 1, Moleman
                                                2, Smudge
                                                3, Lucky Ed
                                                4, Crash test Dummy
                                                5, Iancider
                                                6, Robp
                                                7, Mikebishop
                                                8, Damouk
                                                9, Damouk's mate Tim.

If we get past 15 (if my mate does not use any more spaces) then we will do a stand by list so if anyone who has paid has to pull out then you can replace them & they will get their money back.  8)

Please be quick if your interested as we were not expecting this to be this popular, if it goes well then we make this a regular thing.

I went down there today to see how Iainl was doing on his track day. I didn't get to see him go around the track but at least he did pass the noise test.  8)

To which by pure coincidence Damouk had just turned up to see if he would pass the noise test.

(http://s11.postimg.org/z6h3iu2r3/20150417_134240.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/z6h3iu2r3/)

Which he did. 99.7db I think was result. I did notice the test guy was holding it right up & almost in the exhaust pipe so it should be a bit lower than that next time as it should have been 1/2 meter away.  ;D

Still a few spaces left. :)

For those of you that hasn't done Combe & don't know the circuit here is one I did last year so you can see what the circuit is like. There is a few bumps missing now with the new tarmac but everything else is the same.  :)

Look at the concentration, but at least it was a pass... all be it .3db under the limit. One of the other guys some people adjust their tacho to over read for the test.

Good idea putting the vid up for us who haven't done track days or combe before.

Guys,

We now have a sound-level meter - its a cheapy but it well tell us if we are in the ball-park.  Pre-testing is now a possibility.

I've got a cheapie meter and it's about as much use a chocolate teapot as far as Combe is concerned. If I hold it directly in line with the exhaust at about 30cm it reads about 90db. The test at Combe is a bit of a lottery as they seem to hold it at any angle or distance they like, they didn't even have a distance gauge on it, so the two readings I've had recently are 95 and 98db. I'll test my car again this weekend, and as Ian says it could give us a ball park guide to pre-test, knowing 90db on my meter is a pass at the circuit.

Post by: Iancider on 18, April, 2015, 09:53:55 PM
Ed,

I didn't turn round to see mine but that is shocking if they are that imprecise.  Sound level drops as an inverse cube of the distance so doubling the distance will reduce the power by 8 times and that is 9 dB!  Also the height above the ground is very important because there is the reflection off the hard road surface and potentially from any nearby walls etc.  Meters should always be set to dB(A) which is the shaped response of the human ear.

It should be on a tripod, a fixed distance from the ground and the exhaust pipe.  If not it is a bit of a lottery.  :o  At Abingdon they seemed to do a fully professional test and it is a wide-open space that would have no significant reflections.

Ian

Ian

I've noise tested my car today with my cheapie meter, and to replicate the 96 dB reading at Combe last Monday, I had to hold it at a distance of 30cm directly inline with the oultet. This should give us decent ball-park figure if anybody wants pop over for a quick test, or borrow the meter, otherwise it's an expensive day out if you're turned away on the day

But that idea is better. I will see if we can get a banger from somewhere that can be the replacement for anyone who fails.
We could even get everyone to do 3 laps in it & have our own leaders board in the banger.  8)

Here are some excellent videos of how to drive Castle Combe by Mark Hales.

I'm sure we can all discuss which of the entries to Quarry we'd try!  :D  I use the saloon car line, probably because I don't have the spuds to carry more speed over Avon Rise!

Don't know who Mark Hales is?  Look here http://www.markhales.com/index.html

People do tell me that I take a different line from most but I do my braking after going over avon rise & I do aim for the traffic lights when I brake hard which is nice to know that is the right way when braking hard after going over avon rise.  8)
I just don't always get it right every time though.  ::)

Good useful videos, I think I've got the line sort of right for Quarry, but seeing as I've got even smaller nads than Rob, I can't  resist a comforting dab on the brake pedal going up Avon Rise. Having said that now the track is smoother, I was starting to think I might be able to get all the braking done after the hump - but you only get it wrong once there, so it will have wait 'till I've grown a bigger pair :o ;D

Still only 5 spaces left people. I have had a lot of interest from people but no money received as yet.
So don't delay in case you lose your chance.  :)

Hi Colin I will check if I can get the time off on Monday for the Track Day at Castle Combe on the 17th, I thought it was on the 3rd and couldn't make that date, didn't carry on reading the post. If its ok for me to get the time off count me in. I will pay ASAP.

Hi Colin, sorry to be a pain, but are there any half day passes as I'm a little short on cash at the moment as the new house is taking all my money (and time!) at the moment?

Hope all is well with everyone in the club. Sorry I haven't been about much, but the mini was off the road for ages and then I moved house so have not had much free time. I will make an effort over the summer to catch up with your guys at the regular meets etc.

Don't forget to bring your Driving Licence on the day!
This will be the first time I will show mine there on a track day but apparently you will need it for the form we will all have to fill in on the day.

I'm planning on doing two seasons for 15 minutes at the very start. You will follow a pace car for the first 3 laps where he will drive around on the proper racing line getting slightly quicker each lap then he will peel off for you guys to go around & get used to the circuit with out worrying about experienced guys bothering you.

Season 1 = will be for people who have very little experience of track days

Season 2 = will be for people who have done them but haven't done Castle Combe on a proper track day before.

If you would like one of us track regulars to sit in with you on these laps then I'm sure we will be happy to do so.

I hope this is OK with you guys & if you would like to let me know which Season is for you then you can PM me rather than put it on here. So please let me know so I can make the day go better for you.   8)

Sounds great Colin!

I must admit due to my illness flaring up again lately I am struggling for motivation  :(

There is a chance I may not make the track day and my place MAY be up for grabs.

I am hoping to get the Fury sorted in time (well sorted enough to use), it won't be as I really want it until next year but hopefully working well enough in time for Combe.

I think I'll go for the first category. I've not done a full track day in my own car before. I'm pretty sure I know the right lines but I'd like to start steady and build up.

I have done a Combe driving day in Focus/Imprezza/Elise/Formula Ford but that was about 7 years ago.
I've done a full day at Palmersport driving Caterhams, Clio Cup, 911, M3, GT special and single seater, over 4 years ago.
I also survived a full day bike track day at Combe on an R1 in 2013 and turned out to be one of the faster people in the slow group.

Apologies for the slightly crap picture - off a friend's phone...

In my own car I've only done the 15 minute session on the June day and a few wet laps last Sunday. I'll also have a set of brand new tyres to scrub in (hopefully being delivered today) so a few steady sighting laps would be ideal for me.

yes i think a novice session to start the day would be a good idea, just so we can familiarise our selves with circuit. (its a first time trackday in this car and a first trackday at combe so take it easy on me) ;)

Hi Colin

Good idea most track days I have been on you always do the first session behind a pace car. Me and Brendon attending, if its two sessions, although we are only one car? novice for me quick for Bren. If we get one pace car session per car we are both ok with the experienced group as a pair. Looking forward to the day.

OK details for the day.

Sign in 7.30am-8.30am  = You will also have to sign a Indemnity form as well as showing your Driving Licence which we will need to write the number down on the form.

You will need to do a sound check which you won't be allowed on track until you do & I recommend you do this between 7.30am-8.30am so you will be all sorted before the track opens.

Sound limit is 100db & if you exceed this they won't let you on I'm afraid & there is nothing I can do about this. Sorry.

8.30am = Is the briefing which everyone has to go too. They will give you the low down of all the do's & don'ts, track etiquette & all the rules.

Don't worry the only rule you have to remember is no over taking me!  :P

9am we will start the seasons. If we only get a few wanting to do this then we will fit you all in on the one season. This will be 3 laps behind a pace car which will gradually speed up each lap, then he will peel off & let you get used to the track for about another 5 laps.

9.15am = second season if required.

9.15am = 5pm (accept lunch break) We all have good clean fun for the day.  8)

A few things you will need is = 1, Driving Licence
= 2, No shorts or t-shirts. (you need to be covered up at all times, Including saloon cars.

Please remember there is no fuel station next to circuit any more so bring plenty of fuel with you or you will need to drive into Chippenham.

One little change to the day. Extra driver is still free but we have decided that everyone can have up to two free passengers for the day & any more they will have to pay a fee of £5 per passenger after that.

All the money from this will go towards the Go Inspire project so I hope this is ok with all of you.

Any questions please ask so I can make the day go smoothly for you.  :)
Colin.

Good idea Colin, it's a good idea to help out the new guys, as we all remember our first track day can be quite an intimidating experience. More than one pace car might be an idea, as once you've got more then 3 or 4 cars following, you tend to lose sight of where the correct line is.

I'm happy to help out either as pace car, or to sit in with one of the newbies. Really looking forward to this one, fingers crossed for good weather.

Possibly a daft question - how much petrol am i likely to burn in the day? I've only got 2 x 10l jerry cans and my tank is only 25l so I'm thinking I might have a trip or two to Chippenham to do!! Maybe a chance for the brakes to cool down a bit!

I'm hoping to do two seasons for the two different levels of experience. But that is also a good idea Ed & we will see on the day if it is needed.  :)

I'm sorry to say Dave but it is one of those things you won't know until you have done one with your own car.  :)

Dave - on a good track day on a fast circuit like Combe, I would expect to cover near to 200 miles and burn at least 80 litres, but then mines one of the thirstier cars. I would have thought the cans you have got should get you to lunchtime ok - the other thing to remember is that Circuit Motors no longer sells fuel, so it's a couple of miles to the closest garage.

Been away and hadn't noticed this thread...

Are the any places left for this?

When I went to the Retro, Kit & Classis day in June they were doing 15 minutes sessions throughout the day. Is that the same here? or do we get 5-7 hours of almost uninterrupted track time? Could actually be too much of a good thing!

I was so gutted at missing out on Castle Combe because of the rain the other day and I have never been round a race track.

Forget the £5.00 Colin...I am willing to give £20.00 to the charity If someone takes me round in any type of 7 as a passenger :P

Any takers?

You have a volunteer - all in a good cause!

There will be loads of opportunities for passengers so I guess there is no limit effectively for passenger rides!

You pay £5 for a passenger band so once you have it then you can be a passenger with as many cars as you like.
I know most of us will be happy to take you out mate.  :)

A quick recap for the day.

Sorry.

I don't know what anybody else thinks, but it might help the newbies to have a few cones about the place. I always found markers for turn in point and apex really useful, especially on tracks I didn't know.

When I did formula ford training at Silverstone, flags were used to mark correct gearchange and braking points at the corners as all that should be done before entering the corner. It was quite successfull. Dunno about cones though, might be too much temptation for some. lol ;D ;D

Yes, they always have them out for braking point, turn in point and apex/clipping point.

(or in my case; braking point, fuel pump inertia switch cut off point, and starting coasting to the side point.)  ; :-[ ;D

You will find three different coloured cones, 1= is braking point, 1 is turning in & the other is the apex on the corner you should aim for.
You will find these very helpful. Most of the ones I have hit were extra ones for silly little reasons that Combe seemed fit at the time.  ::) :P

The red cone is the braking point - if you hit that one - you probably braked too late ;)

The blue cone is the apex - if you hit that one - you are turning too tight  ;)

Yellow cones are the pit lane - if you hit those you will also hit buildings  ;)

Silly cones are not easy to spot but they sprout legs and run-out in front of you  :D
Title: Re: Thinking of booking Castle Combe just for us.
Post by: sanzomat on 06, August, 2015, 01:54:17 PM
How can you hit the braking point cone by braking too late? You shouldn't be braking until after that one (depending on the size of your balls/how good your brakes are, quite a way after the cone!). If you hit the turning in cone then you probably left it too late to brake and have locked up!

We need someone to move the braking point cone steadily closer to the turn in cone during the day...

For the record I would just like to say that I think the person least likely to hit any cones at all is Moleman/Colin. I think he's a great driver and all my jibes about cones have been in jest.

There you go Colin! All sorted now!!  :D :D :D

Now can I follow you round Combe so I can get things right please??  :P :P :P :D :D :D :-* :-* :-*

Sanzomat:

There is a subtle difference between Braking Point and Breaking Point.

Similarly An Inhalation should not be confused with Annihilation

Quick changing generally refers to gears and not to underwear after late braking

Similarly skid marks

And you don't spray deodorant in the Pits

And turning-in is not having a rest when it all gets to tiring.

Hope that sorts all of the definitions  ;D

I reckon we could have used this track day to raise funds for the Go! Inspire charity couldn't we?

I am certain if we had let enough mates (and non-mates even) know about it there would have been lots of people who would gladly had paid for passenger rides around the track??

£10 for 5 laps soon adds up if enough guests attended!!  Or even £5 for 5 laps!!  ::)

Most guys/gals interested in cars would give their right arm to go round a race track!!

Yeah I read that Colin, what I'm saying is I think we could do more with it, never mind free passengers I think most would be glad to donate to go round Combe and we could have offered it as a service!!

I've been in business/sales one way or another for 35 years and I bet we could have had a LOT of people paying to go round at £5 for 5 laps, it's a bargain!!! Could have raised a few hundred I think  8)

I know what you are saying mate but I can't do everything. I've booked the circuit, organised the payments, ran around getting enough people for it, answered all the questions, offered advice on if you guys would like me to show you the best line to take, offered passenger rides to anyone who would like one, got everyone to now pay a fee after 2 passenger rides, I'm sure I could find time in between driving on the circuit & signing in other passengers on the day to walk around & generate more people to put up some money for a passenger rides for our charity. Just saying mate. :)

Colin you seem to have taken this personally. I was never saying you or anyone should have done more, it was just an idea. If anything I was having a go at myself for not making more of an effort. I have in fact today gone out and tried to get a few people interested in coming and donating towards the charity, Only managed 3 so far but it's a start.

Unfortunately the idea hit me a bit late in the day for the event otherwise I would have literally gone around a few local pubs and businesses and promoted it myself.

I could not agree with Ed more, you have done a great job and I have often said "I don't know how you do it or find the time" To be frank Colin I am probably one of your biggest cheerleaders, I know you may think I take the mick about the cones and other stuff, but when I call you 'Squadron Leader' I do actually mean it in a nice and very respectful way mate!!

Let's say it as it flippin' well is shall we (and I don't really care what anyone else says or thinks) this club would not be what it is right now without Colin. Would it? I know there are many others who do stuff too (Ian, Ed, Daves x 8!) but good old Moleman is on here every day keeping everyone going, especially when it comes to actual events.

I will do my best to bring you that cake on Monday you have been after for ages too Col!!  :P :P :P :P

You will get a passenger band which is valid for the day with any car.  8)

All the money from this will go towards the Go Inspire project so I hope this is ok with all of you.

Any questions please ask so I can make the day go smoothly for you.  :)

Reserve list so far is  = Jmad & Jagodo

Anyone else coming along as a spectator & maybe even get a passenger ride?

BREAKING NEWS - LITERALLY

This is good news for somebody in the standby queue and bad news for me.  My Front upper NS wishbone broke today and  it also has broken the chassis mounting bracket.  It cannot be repaired for Monday.

Moleman will chose the next person in line to take my place on the track and will be in contact with you asap.

I will still come along and enjoy the day but without my wheels.

Good luck to my replacement.

Ian

That's a real bummer Ian, at least it didn't fail at the top of Avon Rise :o

I hope it's a straight forward fix.

MORE BREAKING NEWS!

Dino Zamparelli has confirmed he will be attending our trackday at Combe on Monday. He will be helping us raise funds for the Go! Inspire charity by offering his services on track in a number of ways.

For a small fee he will be on hand to;

- drive your car with you as a passenger, to prove you need more lessons, not more upgrades!

- give some on track tuition

- give some thrilling passenger rides

Dino is a professional racing driver based in Bristol, and was last year competing in GP3, gaining 6 podium finishes at F1 support races. This year he is competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup sponsored by Bristol Sport. He has kindly offered his services for free to support our charity, so whilst we will announce suggested prices on the day please feel free to give more if you can! My daughter Izzy has offered to organise things on the day and take the money, so be prepared to be harassed by her during the day!

Dino took Ben Conolly for a few laps in my car at the action day earlier in the year, here are a couple of videos of him finding the level of grip in my car :o  a great bit of car control at Quarry @ 6:30 on the first video

Thanks in advance for your support

Bummer for Ian and Colin. As was said, in many ways better now than when you hit the brakes at the end of the straight. Hope you can get it fixed quickly. Might be worth checking the other corners (I expect you already have). Are these kind of fractures common on these kind of cars? Were those welds done at the factory or part of the kit assembly?

All my wishbones brackets are bolted straight through the GRP so that's one thing I don't have to worry about!

Hope to get it done today.

There is a space now if anyone would like it?
(Not my space but Ian's)

Wow,

It never rains but it pours Colin.

That break looks easily repairable but it has fractured at the base of the weld.  The rule of thumb is that the weld is stronger than the metal because the over-weld is thicker and this break is out of the face of the tube just below the weld.  So the forces have been great enough to fatigue the metal where is becomes stiffer at the corner.  Like Ed did it would be ideal to make a web to the top bar to spread the load.

Good luck Col!

Could be worth adding extra to the other side as well even if it's not showing signs of breaking yet. ::)

Hope so. I have a trailing arm bush that is knackered.  :(  It sounds horrendous and have not been able to get a new bush in time. I have been told it is safe to use as long as I can bear the noise. Bit embarrassing though tbh!  :-[

Managed to get all the other little jobs done though. I must be getting old, 5 hours working on the car and I can hardly move now. Stiff, sore, aching and downright tired.  :'(

Since my last trackday at Cadwell Park I've squeezed in a new big radiator, so hopefully I won't have to cut short any sessions because of overheating - which is probably just as well as Dino will be giving it a hammering again.

Also went to fit my slicks this afternoon and found a wheel nut missing off the car, don't have a clue where that went!
Managed to get a stop gap replacement from Yate breakers just before they closed.

I've managed to lose a few nuts and bolts off the cars over the years, always heard them fall off, never managed to find one yet despite spending hours walking along the road where they fell off!

I've done a few more tweaks, front and rear now toeing in 0.5 degrees (4mm across the rim if my maths is right that should be 0.5 degrees?) and best of all I've managed to get the exhaust outlet central in the hole in the back of the rear end - that's been bugging me since I got the car! Just needed a washer under one of the rubber bobbins that supports the can.

I decided to remove the hood to stop it flapping around and falling off its shelf under braking so if it rains tomorrow you know who to blame.

I went out for a nice blast and I can't believe the difference my suspension tweaks have made. Much more confident for tomorrow. Why did I say that???? watch me fall off on the first lap now.

All gassed up and ready to go.

I could have sworn I put a post about this on here earlier today but it is nowhere to be seen!! Weird.

Colin there is no mention of helmets in the info for this day. We have to have long sleeves and no shorts but what about helmets? Obligatory I would have thought?

Sorry about this mate doing them for so long I forget that some may not know this, so my mistake.

You will need to wear a helmet on the day. It doesn't have to be a full face one but I do recommend one if you don't have a windscreen

If you don't own one you can hire them straight from Castle Combe so bring your credit card as they will need to take a deposit if you do hire one.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR DRIVING LICENCE! :)

I think I might have just replied to your email but just in case you are someone different,  You don't need to bring anything if you are just watching & it is free. If you would like a passenger ride then make sure you are wearing full length trousers & coat or jumper & trainers. If you have your own helmet then bring that, if you don't then don't worry we should be able to get you one. It is £5 for the band as you know but that is going straight to the charity.
So come over & say Hi you will find us a friendly bunch. You can't miss me I have a yellow westy & van both with a hornet on the back of it.
Cheers Colin.

I will be bringing THREE full face helmets Colin so if anyone is short I'm sure they can borrow one of mine as only two maximum will be in use at any one time.

I also have a childs-size helmet, if anyone wants me to bring that for their kids please shout ASAP so I can get it out and bring with.

It'll save having to hire one as mine is FOC  :D

Thank you Colin and those that ran the track day today.

Like many I first visited Castle Combe with my dad, in my case in the '60's: I cycled there from Bristol as a teenager before I could drive, and worked in the paddock most years since 1975.

Today I drove round there for the first time.

In a £400 car I have been tweeking for 15 months. I have modified and revised the suspension in line with my regular practice. The super Protech dampers that give smooth road manners adjust to handle all the aggression asked of them.
Over the winter I welded in stronger chassis rails and cross bracing to cure body vibrations.

This morning I drove it to my limits and, as expected it was grossly down on power. Consequently I remained the moving chicane – thanks for giving me space.

And just before lunch Dino threw it over the curbs and rumble strips, slid it round Quarry and chased down a couple of cars he had to give best to. He rubbished the gear ratio's and tried to use revs the car didn't have, but liked the suspension. So this afternoon I threw it at a curb or two myself and pushed a bit harder.

My brain won't let me turn in fast enough yet. There is SO much I need to get my head around. As a race mechanic I was aware of how cerebral Motorsport is, now I understand a bit more.

A fitting 65th birthday pressy to myself I reckon.
Thanks hardly covers it but thanks anyway, Guys

..........and a big thanks to Colin from me, what a great day! Everybody was going really well as the new surface is now well rubbered in, and much quicker than earlier this year. My car didn't quite survive the whole day at the hands of Dino, as I ended up with a broken rear wishbone, but I can't complain as it had a real hammering today and the rear end needed rose jointing anyway, so winter upgrades have come early again.

Thanks to all who gave passenger rides and those who donated money to the Go! Inspire charity.

Videos and stories to follow.

Thanks a lot guys, I had a great time. I apologise to everyone that I got in the way of but I was hoping that everyone would at least have me that they could overtake to make up for not being allowed to overtake Moleman.

I was rather disappointed with my car because it wasn't gripping as well as last time, which I think was down to too high tyre pressures. As a result I went grass cutting twice before I got used to it. It also seemed to lose power as the day progressed - probably engine bay heat, so I probably need a cool air supply to the carb. When I parked up after a session the bonnet was too soft with the heat to actually support its own weight!

My cockpit camera battery only lasted two sessions and had a lot of shake on it, which I am trying to correct with some post-processing software but it is a very slow process. Also the water-proof enclosure seems to have been sound-proof too, so despite being told I was right on the sound limit there no sound. It is amazing how many things don't actually go right when it comes to the test.

One thing that worked faultlessly was my Racelogic VBox Sport, so I know that my best time was 1:40.5 with a top speed of 97mph.

Still, I had great fun and the car got back in one piece - that makes it a good day.

What a great trackday.  We had loads of track time and there was no queueing.  Weather was perfect.  8)

It was really nice to meet some new people and take some of them out around the track for a blast.

There was one or two red flags.  Towards the end of the day I went out for a final blast on my own.  I'd only done a couple of laps and it was red flagged.  We all came back into the pits.  Soon the track was ready again and I got ready to go out.  Just as I was leaving, the Combe ambulance came into the pits with the driver holding something out of the window.  As a passed him I noticed he was holding my boot lid!  Oops, it had come off on circuit and that's what had caused the red flag!  Sorry everyone!  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

I have a few videos of the day which I'll upload soon.

Many thanks to Colin and the other organisers of the day!  8) 8)

What an awesome day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Full praise to Colin for organising such a great event. It was my 1st ever time on a track and I was gobsmacked how fast everyone was! And by mid afternoon I was so tired I could have sat in my tin top and gone to sleep, I never knew it would be so tiring. How do F1 drivers do it??? 2 hours flat out in searing heat, they are superhuman now in my eyes! The last time I had a day that ended with me that tired and that happy a 20 year old blonde was involved!!!  :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D

The old Fury held up pretty well though for some odd reason one of the twin master brake cylinders (the rear one) gave up the ghost half a mile from home. The piston has come out too far. I only knew cos the pedal went a bit floppy! Got home ok but will have to look at that later. Maybe the fluid got too hot, expanded and pushed it out? Or maybe the bias was set too far out and it got pulled out when I braked? The cylinder did seem to have too much fluid in it when I looked. Weird how it didn't do it at the track day though when I was braking for my life!!  ;D :o

I learned some valuable lessons.

Mistakes I made!!.............

1. On the novice sighting laps behind the pace car (Moleman/Colin) NEVER be at the back of the train of cars. It's Chinese whispers, I was last or one but last and consequently I spent all day not having a clue where the racing lines were. Watching back my gopro footage it is clear I had no clue where to be on the track! It may as well have been half the width as I spent most of my time off line and on the wrong part of the track.

I was braking too late to start with which resulted in a spin and a 'straight on' at bobbies across the grass and spin at the essess. I got them right later but the ones I never got right ever were Camp and Quarry. I watched Dino, Ed, Rob and Colin from the bank by Avon bridge and the line those fast guys took was very different to almost everyone else. Eventually I ended up consistently braking and turning in far too early and hence was just not carrying through enough speed. No synchro on 4th to 3rd really hurt my times as I had to change gear well before the corner or I tended to have to brake VERY hard and enter way too quickly as I fumbled for a gear! Bit scary at times to be honest!

2. Not staying out for enough laps in one session. I tended to do a warm up lap then 3 or 4 fast laps then a warm down lap. If I had the time over I would stay out for far more fast laps, maybe 8 or more as I found I got consistently quicker on each lap and was most likley coming in before I had 'peaked'. I have only ever done a few hunded miles in the Fury and had not driven it for 8 months plus had brand spanking new R888's on it and if I'm honest I was a bit scared of coming off at high speed to start with and after 3 laps the tyres were just starting to come into their own - should've stayed out longer and made the most of them being hot!

You guys were right about the tyres though, once they 'come on' they are flippin amazing! The car just seemed to change into a different animal after about 3 hard-ish laps. Weird, but fantastic to experience.

3. Not going out with Dino! Grrr, annoyed at myself for that error.

4. Not having the bottle to ask Colin, Ed, Rob or any of the really fast guys to take me on a passenger ride. I am a rubbish passenger and would probably have been scared most of the time but I would have at least learned the lines and though I am nowhere near as quick as any of them at least I would have experienced how it should be done.

5. Being too tired and in too much pain from my shoulder injury to get enough laps in during the day. I think I did less than 40 laps which is rubbish. Next time I hope it will have healed by then.

I learned so much from that day from Colin and Ian, so a big thanks to you both  :)

Overall I knocked off over ten seconds from my fastest early laps to my best last ones, I was quite pleased with that given it was my 1st ever attempt at track driving. My best was 1:30.34 but with a bit of practice, knowing the correct lines(!) and no 4th to 3rd synchro issues (that cost me sooooo much time!) I think I could get that down by maybe 5 seconds eventually?

A note to the driver of the yellow Westie with black mudguards (I think the reg was Q217 GJT), I don't know who you are but thank you for 3 of the best laps of the day! I chased you as best I could and on the straights I was closing in on you but I just could not stay with you on the corners, my car just did not feel planted enough (a visit to Camber Dave is in order I think) and you were QUICK!!! What an exciting ten minutes that was for me and my passenger, CHEERS whoever you are!!!   8) 8) 8)

The repair work begins! The car is back up in the air again, and the wishbones are stripped out. I'm amazed how little damage has been done and it's just a case of rose jointing the ends of the wishbones that I haven't already done. The combination of big slicks, too many kerbs and a Pro racing driver is just too much for the original design, where the tube holding the polybush just splits and peals apart.

Hi, had a great day at Castle Combe, first track day in the car, it performed brilliantly, and was quite quick. no major damage other than a smashed number plate, which is now on the garage wall.

My wife edited together a bit of the footage from the go pro with great results, although it felt alot quicker in real life,  ;D

Fantastic video mikebishop. It is good that your wife caught me overdoing it and doing some gardening at the beginning of the movie. I see that you learned from me eventually!

Thanks to everyone involved in setting this up. I had a great time.
My set-up and tyres seemed to have done the job as the car was transformed from the June outing. I was really pleased with the way it was handling, just need a bit more power now (well, just need to get it off the pallet and into the car!!) and maybe sort out the overheating. I managed to boil over after watching the needle hit the red in the morning and thinking it would be fine for another couple of laps! Taking the spare wheel out helped (thanks for the advice former Libra owner - didn't catch your name) but it was still hitting the red after about 15 minutes but as long as I came in then the water stayed in the system rather than over the paddock tarmac. Looking at the photos just now I'm thinking of taking off the front number plate for track use as Steve's stick on one leaves a much bigger opening to let the air in.
Thanks for the passenger ride Colin - gives me something to aspire too (who am I kidding!). Thanks to my various passengers for not leaving any brown marks on the seat - must try harder next time!
For the final 20 minutes I think it was just me and Colin out on track as it seemed quite lonely with nobody filling my mirrors. After 15 minutes the temperature was hitting the red but I didn't want to go in until the chequered flag so started using 5th gear on the straights to let it cool down a bit which seemed to work and only a bit slower and managed to stay out to the end and avoid getting lapped.
Great day. Hopefully the first of many.

Have you got a manual fan override button Dave?

I discovered (cos I forgot) that my fan ONLY works on a dash button!! It was getting near the red when I suddenly remembered to turn it on! The temp dropped like a stone. Sweet as a nut.

Yep, manual fan switch was on all day. It does come on automatically but just as the needle enters the red (so would have been on all day without the manual override!)

Taking the number plate off will be an easy, free first try at fixing it, alternatively http://www.drawmer.net/libra/radiator.htm (http://www.drawmer.net/libra/radiator.htm)

That looks  like a very worthy upgrade Dave and very well thought through.  I would suggest you leave the spare out if you can - I dont have one but just carry an electric pump and tyre gunge plus AA cover - one of those will always get me out of trouble.

Any thoughts on whether this degree of number plate blocking the rad inlet duct would make a big difference - I can't help wondering if the plate might be deflecting the air flow as well as blocking part of the opening. It may not need much to make the difference, just using 5000 revs in 5th on the straights rather than 6000 in 4th was keeping it just below the red on the last few laps. When I fit the VVC engine I may well be producing more heat though so might need the rad upgrade.
Title: Re: Thinking of booking Castle Combe just for us.
Post by: Facial Hair Optional on 19, August, 2015, 09:01:10 PM
I think moving the number plate would make a noticeable difference Dave, it's blocking almost half your front air entry and as you say most likely causing turbulance that is messing up the other half - get rid!!

Might be worth following the advice Ian gave in a past thread, get an infra-red temp sensor and see what the ACTUAL engine temp is. Your gauge may not be accurate and what you want is the engine running at the CORRECT temp, not too hot OR too cool! Would be worth doing it before and after removing the number plate too mate I think.

I'd love to know what the results are please!

PS. If I'm honest I also think it looks better with the plate on the bonnet like the other car. Much tidier IMHO  :D
Title: Re: Thinking of booking Castle Combe just for us.

Based on the fact it boiled over when I got back into the paddock when I let it go halfway through the red zone but the water stayed in the system when I came in when it just touched the red I'm thinking the gauge is about right.

I'll only know if it works whilst on track as I've never had any problems on the road, even when thrashing it.

The only trouble is that since 2001 stick on number plates are actually illegal. The only way to get away with it is if the plate was put on prior to 2001 as they can't make you change something that was legal at the time it was fitted but as the car was built and registered in 2004 that might be hard to argue. I know a lot of people get away with it but with my luck I'd get nicked! No problem to just take it off for the track though.

They have to catch you 1st mate!!  :P

My Tiger is 2003, plates on nose and always has been through all previous owners, none have ever been stopped. I doubt most coppers even know/care/have the time to bother tbh mate. In any case all you'd get is a telling off and nicely asked to remove them before you next drive it. I have even driven with the old style black and silver rear plates many a time before now.

Great day out at Combe me and dad loved it couldn't of been any luckier with the weather.
My fastest time I could record on the go-pro was a 1.16.4 with a passenger unfortunately the camera ran out of battery as I left the wifi turned on so didn't get a time without a passenger sounds like an excuse for another track day
Dad managed to get a 1.22 has a bit of catching up he must of lost his edge with his old age

I have cut a short section of my video which shows my attempt to keep in contact with Facial Hair Optional. You will see that he is getting away from me. I had already come off twice so I was trying not to make it 3 times in one session. My camera was out of place after excursion number 2 so most of my video is pretty naff but the battery ran out after that session, so that is all I have got. My best time was 1:40.9 for this session.

I hope that this link works...

Ah so it was you I was chasing!! I have some great footage of me letting you by and then chasing you so I could learn the race line for about 4 laps or so! If I can learn to edit it to get rid of the time in the car park I will post it.

I timed you from the 'grassy knoll' by the Avon bridge and you were lapping around 1:17 ish, which is why I am still wondering how I managed to keep up with you later in the day!! I think you were taking it easy on me and allowing me to stay with you cos we were only lapping then at around 1:31

Brilliant James! (I think I have figured out your name correctly?) Love the title too, very clever dude!

Right at the end there you can see me facing the wrong way on Bobbies! You missed my spin by about ten sconds, damned shame as my gopro was off and I wanted to see what it looked like!

1:40 was about spot on as that was one of my 1st early laps and I was on 1:40 at the beginning too. Thanks for posting that, it's interesting and kinda strange to see video of yourself from behind.

it would of been my dad that was driving then so not to sure what he was doing we had been told off for being to noisy on the drive by so he may have been taking it easy on the straight ?
I was the one in the white helmet and back racing overalls

I think the next track day we will have to try full slicks instead of the r888 see if that makes any difference the r888 are worn out now anyway so new tyres are required

Just updated my previous post while you were posting yours John.

Colin says slicks make a few seconds but you have to learn how to get the best out of them. I was soooooo impressed with my new R888s. What a difference.

Another good semi slick tyre is the Yokohama 048 or the 032 probably a bit more grip than the r888

The Yoko's are great, but pricey. It's got to be slicks if you're going to do more than a couple of trackdays per year. I paid £500 for a new set of 13" Team Dynamic 1.2's, shod with S/H slicks and that's not far off the price of a set of Yoko's or wider 888's. From then on I've never paid more than £20 for a slick tyre, and the set on the car now have done at least 5 trackdays and they've probably got one more left in them now. Dino reckons they are OK but have lost their edge probably due to the number of heat cycles they've gone through.

The way you and Dino drive I'm surprised they didn't melt!! My front right 888 was so hot I could barely touch it so God knows what your slicks must have felt like!!

I get the benefits of slicks, both in terms of cost and grip but:
1) Where do you keep a set of four wheels/tyres when they're not on the car? You guys must have bigger garages/sheds etc than me.
2) If you are driving your car to/from the track it'll be a struggle to find somewhere on a kit car to carry four extra wheels - just bringing jerry cans, helmets and some tools used up all the space I had!
3) Having weird PCD size doesn't make it easy to get additional wheels - not sure if I can get 13" rims in 4x3.75" PCD?

I think there will always be a difference between doing track days really seriously and just having fun and making the best of whatever you've got. I had a blast in mine but was nowhere near the pace of the "VFC". I definitely want to do more and I'll keep tweaking/improving my car to get the best from it and try to improve my skills too but to go to the next level I'd probably need a different car as a starting point, as well as a van, trailer, and moving house to somewhere with a big garage!

Driving the car to the circuit also limits the tracks I can do - What have we got in a, say, 50-60 mile radius? Llandow, Pembrey, Thruxton plus a few airfields? Any more?

I've not got much to compare it with but I was very pleased with how my new Yoko AD08R's worked. I read somewhere they have the same compound as 048's but with a few more grooves to give better wet performance so as an all round tyre hopefully a good choice. For a tyre that fits my existing rims they were good value too at around £50 a corner less than the nearest size 888's (that would have been narrower/taller too).

It sounds like you all had a great time, but that makes it worse that I couldn't make it.  I know things like this are a massive amount of work to organise and Colin is probably still trying to catch his breath, but when do you think the next one will be? Sneak one in this year or will it be next summer?

I will be planning to do more next year but I won't be able to book one there until then as they are fully booked. We can always book some track days together with other company's that have already booked the circuit or another circuit if you prefer?  :)

Keep the video's & pictures coming guys. :)

I have been using Windows Movie Maker on Windows 8.1 to edit my video and to rotate it 180 degrees (because my camera was hanging from the roll bar). It is pretty good, but rather slow on my laptop. I also used the option to remove camera shake and wobble, which does quite a good job at the expense of more time. But what I have just noticed is that it has significantly reduced the field of view which was already pretty small with my cheap gopro look-alike. I should have guessed that an ebay £25 camera is not the same but then ... I drive a Dutton.

Well here is one of my vids at last. Shame I didnt get any of my two spins and one 'straight on' across the grass at Bobbies!!

Me and my mate in the Cossie Fury chasing Rivsy36's dad in their cracking little 7!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL5Db5yNxEY&feature=youtu.be

I let Colin go by (0:30secs) (didnt want to embarrass him by showing him how fast I was :P), but he is too quick to follow so I waited for another victim I could try and hang on to and hopefully learn their lines as I had no clue where they really were.

I didnt have to wait long!!! Rivsy36's 7 came alongside and I indicated to let him pass me going in to Bobbies (1:15secs) and then I set off after him!  8)

I was doing ok on the straights, particularly after a few laps but in those damned corners I kept missing my 4th to 3rd gear change (no synchro!!) and I just dropped back a country mile every time. You could see me waving my hands in disgust at myself! I would repeatedly close in on the straights only to struggle in the corners again and again. GRRRR!!!  >:(

Just as my tyres came on form and I started getting really close enough to think about a pass down one of the straights for some reason I decided to do a cool down lap and come in. Complete lack of experience!! Also lack of confidence in a car and tyres that were new and alien to me I think.

I really enjoyed those laps but went another 1.5 secs faster later when not chasing anyone, just being a bit braver. I only did 38 laps for the day and I think I could have improved a bit more had I done more laps. Big mistake!

I worked out that my average lap speed was about 74-75mph. Top speed was about 118mph if I recall correctly though I was a bit busy to look and my passenger couldnt reach the gps speedo we had on the dash which had moved and was no longer visible  :(

If there were more track days Col, I would defo invest in a trailer and a better, faster car (you know what I'm talking about!!!  ;))

it would of been my dad that was driving then so not to sure what he was doing we had been told off for being to noisy on the drive by so he may have been taking it easy on the straight ?
I was the one in the white helmet and back racing overalls

I think the next track day we will have to try full slicks instead of the r888 see if that makes any difference the r888 are worn out now anyway so new tyres are required

Looking at the video it looks like it was YOU I was chasing John, not your dad? White helmet driving at least!

Ah right, so did he have someone else no board and not you as a passenger? Might explain how I mananged to almost hang on to him, he was trying not to scare the hell out of them maybe? I know he was quicker that those laps suggest at other times in the day (1:22 I seem to recall you saying) That is a quick time and with that Vauxhall lump I would have thought more like it!

Been considering a Westie with a red top in it myself. Same bhp as yours round abouts. Never been in one myself but I have seen them on youtube and they really can shift!

He he had his friend in the car I don't bother with the passenger rides not really my thing  :o :o
Yea they are really good you should of come over I would if taken you out for a hot lap it is ultra quick !
Yea dad laps are usually about 1.22 ish
I wish I had a timed lap with no passenger as my best  was a 1.16.4 on the go pro footage with a passenger tho.
My friend who races caterhams up there Has done a 1.10 before  :o :o
His car had a bit more horse power and it's loads lighter
He did tell us to remove the windscreen as that would make a huge difference down the straights !

Title: Re: Thinking of booking Castle Combe just for us.
Post by: Facial Hair Optional on 21, August, 2015, 02:57:37 PM
Yes that is my big regret of the day that I didnt go round with some fast drivers in faster cars than mine  :(

1:16.4 is incredibly quick, faster even than Colin I think (just). I know it's accurate too cos me and a mate timed you from the hill by Avon Bridge and clocked you repeatedly at 1:17 by eye and a stopwatch/mobile phone.

1:10 is super human, on a list of laptimes recorded for the track the fastest submitted so far is a Ferrari 458 speciale I think, most likely driven by a pro driver and that was 1:11.90!!

Maybe you should submit your times to that site? http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/castle_combe.html

The windscreen removal would add a fair bit to your max mph on the straights I'm sure = lower laptimes of course. My cars have aero screens, I love 'em!!

Is your Westie track prep'd other than a stonking engine? ie brakes, clutch, suspension, stripped out weight, paddle shifters etc?

I'll send you a PM link to one I have been thinking of viewing  ;)

Just watched it! Holy moley!!!

Clocked him on unhindered laps, consistently 1:05's time after time!

Makes you realise though how good the VFC lot (you, Colin, Rob, Ed, Rivsy's dad!! - anyone I left out?) are at 1:16 - 1:20's!!

Rivsy,s Dad the steadier one!!
Our car is a Race Corp LA Roadster it has a good engine but is let down a bit else where, STD Type 9 gearbox, Wilwood brakes which still suffer with fade, this is an ongoing project. And electrics that could do with some TLC, any good Auto Electricians recommended would be good? It was good to have you in the rear view, as Brendon had mentioned earlier we had been Blacked Flagged three times for noise, trying to short shift to keep the NOISE POLICE at bay isn't much fun. As for the exhaust it was made at Interpro last year didn't think they made it big enough at the time, should have complained then. Only makes 99 Decibel at static test to close for comfort 93 on the drive by. On the phone to them to get something bigger hopefully at a bit of a discount as they should of done this first time. Hope we can get another track day in the near future. Need some more Tyres now to make it legal to drive, no trailer. We also have some GoPro footage although our upload speed seems to take hours to do just a couple of minutes!!!!!

I have uploaded a video of my 'Offings' if anyone is interested. I think the first one was initiated by a rather abrupt down change to 3rd with no throttle blip or clutch easing. The second was helped by a little bump in the track, I think. TWICE in less than a lap, that's dreadful.

You were suffering some serious oversteer so visit to Dave Gallop would do you some good I think.

Nice video Jagodo it is good to see that people put up their spins as well as their good bits. I only had one spin & will be putting it up.

Robp that was my favourite bit of the day. when I overtook you knowing you was on a cool down lap with the speed you was doing then I saw you in my mirror when I was going up Quarry, I said to myself "He didn't go in? OK like that is it? Game on!" I was smiling all the way through that little run mate. I was so glad it was one of though's rare moments I didn't have a passenger.  8)

I have modified my post John to now include your dad!!  ;D ;D I know a couple of very good auto-electricans mate. One I have used myself in the past and intend to use again and one recommended by my mechanic mate who says he's the dogs. I will dig out their details and PM you.

Short shiftting explains a lot. I feel more inadequate by the day!  :( ;D ;D ;D  I'm surprised they didnt black flag me as I actually failed the noise test at 100 point sumfin, but they guy said he thought my revs were high so let me through. I know the car has been tested dozens of times and clocks 99dB. A bit too close for comfort as you say!

I take it you trashed your tyres on the day then? Hope you get the silencer sorted at a fair price John. I think Colin has the right idea about track days, get a van and trailer and go to loads of nice tracks all over the UK! Cadwell Park looked brilliant!

You are too kind Ian. My corners were useless but I later found out my bias bar was way out and the fronts were locking up under braking nearly every time. When I got back home the push rod had come out of one of the master cylinders it was so far out of adjustment! Luckily it didnt happen on track. I think maybe I need some high temp brake fluid too as it had expanded so much it was leaking out of the vent hole on one cap!!!

Thanks mate not quite up to Dino's standards yet.  :)

Ed I studied the last video's he did & was looking forward to some intuition from him this time, it was a shame he wasn't allowed but looking at those video's did give me the confidence to push just that little bit more around the corners & to feel  how much more grip I can get out of my car.  8)

Here is what I saw once I passed Rob only to find he suddenly decided not to come in on his slow down lap & catch up with me so the first laps are me with a really big smile on my face, keeping an eye on Rob in my mirrors while trying to do my best to keep him at bay.  ;D

Followed by a few more passenger laps then my only spin of the day when I couldn't find 3rd & stuck it into 1st!  :o
What I will say is I never left the track limits (grey stuff in layman's terms) which means this was my first track day at combe that I never went on to the grass. Even did my fastest lap ever that day.  8)

Cheers mate I think I was a bit lucky with how that spin went. Ed & rivsy36 are just as quick with Robp just a bit better than us.  8) It all comes with time, Hopefully more you you guys will be regular track nuts & be just as good. I think Ian would have gone well with his car that he is more used too as well.  :D

I forgot to add thanks for spurring me on rob I loved the way that on your video as soon as I passed you your foot immediately went on the accelerator.  8)

Cool, thanks Colin.

Being as half of it is going to the Go! Inspire charity I think we should all order one or two at least  :)

I will be going to the ten squid option and having 3 myself. A tenner well spent IMHO  :)

I'm just putting this one up for fun & to show you not all my passengers seem that relaxed in the car.  :P

I had my mate & his wife up from New Zealand so came up for the day. She hates cars especially going fast in them but to my surprise she did have a go after watching her husband going around. As you will see she did ok up to her husband who went first.
I think he thought my dashboard was coming lose so kindly made sure it never fell off.  :P He did enjoy it but he did admit that this fingers were numb for a few hours afterwards.  ::) ;D

Talk about a white knuckle ride!! Have you got finger indentations in your dash mate!!

I have been watching your lines Colin - watching and learning!!

You VFC boys tend to turn in way before the turn-in marker cones and generally apex before the blue apex cones giving you a nice flat line through the corners. I guess those marker cones are a compromise as they have to take into account heavier saloon cars as well as light weight cars like ours.

I think I can make some improvements in my technique next time out at Combe. I will look forward to that day!!

Loved that! His arms must have ached after that. If you look in the n/s wing mirror you can see that Tina his holding on to the harness straps with both hands the whole time too. Didn't even let go to respond to your thumbs up :)
