Title: Castle Combe trackday Mon 5th October
Post by: Lucky Ed on 15, September, 2015, 08:59:10 PM
Myself and Moleman are looking at going to Combe again soon, most Monday's are available but I'm thinking of Mon 5th October with Motorsport events. Does anybody else fancy coming along?

Booking trackdays in advance are always a gamble weather wise this time of year, but taking on Combe in the wet is quite a challenge, and is great to hone your driving skills, if not your reactions ;)

Have a look and see what you think FHO. They are a good operator with some good guys running it, they don't tolerate bad driving so the baseball cap brigade tend not to attend ;)

I am a definite not sure.

Life is complex at the moment but I suspect my car will be in bits again at that time for stage two of my rebuild.

Will let you know soon.

I see they have Hallavingon in their list on that link Ed. Has anyone done that one before? Any good?

After Combe I cant see any local track comparing can you? Yeah, yeah I know Cadwell was the dogs ok!!!!!! Not local, would need to hire the club tralier and get a tow hitch fitted. Next year then on Cadwell yes??

I normally manage to break something during the day, so I don't expect the next one to be any different - as they say
"if you wanna play you've gotta pay" ;D

Dino is not a happy bunny being only 6th at the moment, as he was tipped to be challenging for the title at the start of the season, but has had endless trouble with the car so far. He is much more optimistic for the next round at Silverstone on Sun 28th. You can watch it live on ITV4 along with the BTCC races.

Hullavington is cheap, cheerful and local, it's not very challenging but is great for beginners or a cheap test day. Abingdon is probably the best of the bunch as far as airfield days are concerned.

On the wish list for the future are Cadwell, Donington and Oulton. Donington is handy as it's do-able in the day, it's knackering but it's possible.

Soz, I stand corrected, the 27th it is. There's two Porsche races during the day, but the times change at each meeting so will have to wait and see the TV schedule.

Don't know yet, I'll let you know!

It wasn't much different at the beginning of the year before it rubbered in, but it might be better now. Having said that, rumour has it they're resurfacing the rest of it from Bobbies to the start line this winter, so it will still be a track of two halves.

I cannot make the 5 October which is a great shame as I have to work :(. I will make a trackday with you guys one day.  I think I am unlikely to get a trackday in before the end of the year now but I have a couple of road trips organised.  ;D. And a couple of car events so happy days.

As for Combe in the wet I understand the old surface is very slippery when wet and the new surface is slippery when damp and then has more grip when fully wet.

It rained a bit on my last visit and one of the instructors gave me a quick warning / advice as I was queuing to go out; it was damp on track.  I did a couple of laps but came in as it was a bit too interesting for me to put the power down. :o. More a reflection of my bravery than the car's ability.

I hope you have another good one.

As for next year I would be up for any of those tracks would be great and I will do Spa next year too.

Spa would be a good trip for next year and not a lot more expensive than Silverstone GP or Brands GP even with the tunnel and a stay over. :D

Yes please! Definitely up for a trip to Spa!  8)  It has got to be the greatest circuit.  I know my Westy will be maxing out half way down the long straights but I don't care.   :P ;D ;D

Even SWMBO is warming to the idea of letting me go!  :D

What would it max out at Rob do you reckon? Could you change the diff/gearing especially for Spa?

Looks like a fabulous circuit to drive but as you say I think most of us would be limited by our top speed there?

It is geared to do 140mph but with the engine power and poor aerodynamics it probably won't quite make it up there!  It is only really the Kemmel Straight that would be an issue.  It is last thing that would put me off though.  The rest of the circuit will be great.   8) 8)

Anyway, this post is about Combe. :D  I might be up for this MSE day.  ::)

I am driving an supercharged Atom around Combe in a few weeks time at another event.  I hope it's dry! :o

Already looking into SPA & it seems reasonable in mid week bit shoots up on weekends. It will take around 7 to 8 hours to get there so I could be done over 2 days but that will depend on the tunnel times.  I will look into it more after the weekend but it may be one for next year now.

Anyway who else is up foe Castle Combe in October?

Post by: Lucky Ed on 21, September, 2015, 07:33:44 PM
I've now booked for this one.

I've been hanging back a little as I've had quite a bit to fix on the car, as it suffered a bit at the hands of Dino :o

The car is now fully rose jointed, after the rear wishbones failed bouncing off the kerbs. With the help and knowledge of Camber Dave the rear end has had bump stops added to the rear shocks, to stop the tyres rubbing on the bodywork, and the rear anti roll bar has been moved as it wasn't stiff enough. Dave also noticed when watching a video that the front was too soft, so I now have some 500lb springs on the front.

Since building the engine 18 months ago, it always had a small oil leak from the head gasket, but after 10 or so hard track days it got a lot worse, and the engine was running very hot, so off the head came. It was skimmed as it was slightly warped and a couple of valve guides replaced, refitted with ARP bolts and Cometic head gasket, and guess what......IT STILL LEAKS.....AAAARRRRGH!

It looks like the block is not flat or more likely the finish is too rough for a MLS gasket, even tough I took ages with a block and wet n dry taking the worst of the ridges off. The leak's not too bad so I'm hoping it will last a couple more days before a winter rebuild.

Any more takers for this one - it would be nice to see an ASBO on track ;) :D

I would love to come and play but 1) I'm running out of leave. 2) I've made a start on stripping down my VVC engine ready for the transplant - Combe is clearly a power circuit and I didn't have enough! Next time I'll have a bit more hopefully. 3) After overheating last time I've ordered a bigger radiator (mk2 Passat) that'll go in at the same time as the engine swap. 4) After finding an extra neutral when going for 3rd several times I need to have a more precise gearchange before venturing out onto the track again - will also be fixed as part of my swap as it'll be a different gearbox with cable change rather than rattle rods. 5) I've got a quicker steering rack waiting to go in too which I'd like to have in before I go out on track again. 6) Some roll over protection would be nice - I have a cunning plan!

If all goes well over the next few weeks the engine might be ready so the car might be in bits on 5th Oct!

I won't go into detail here but medical stuff is stopping me from driving pretty much at all atm. When I do manage to get out in a car it's usually only 20 mins or so before I have to call a stop to it. Not a happy bunny lately I can tell you  :'( :( >:(

You are right Ed, high pressure moving in on Friday apparently so the weekend and beyond is looking promising.

Luckily the injuries will get better Colin but the doc has made it very clear there is only one way and that is to stop using the injured joints and ligaments and let them heal. Injections, painkillers and anti inflammatory drugs have all been tried and all failed so far.

I will be ok for next year though mate I promise. Don't worry, you WILL get to beat an ASBO round Combe in 2017!!

I suspect the only reason you didnt last time it was there was because you were not as good on track as you are now. I've seen you drive mate, you are proper quick (same goes for Ed, Rob, Rivsy and a few others). Also Andrew and Robin are waaaaay better drivers than me!

I am under no illusions about being able to be faster than you guys, I have no chance I know that. But... I can and I will learn to try and keep up with you one day!! I'm even gonna go on a diet to lower my overall weight on track, cos I know sure are hell you lot won't add ballast to even up the score!!  :o :o ;D ;D ;D ;D :P :P :P

I notice from the organisers website that you can also book track tuition at £25 for 20 minutes or £70 for an hour. Has anyone used them or done anything similar before and is it worth it?
Title: Re: Castle Combe trackday Mon 5th October
Post by: Lucky Ed on 23, September, 2015, 11:18:08 AM
I've used the tuition quite a lot a track days and they're never a waste of money. They are best when you're just starting out or a new to a circuit as you've got plenty for them to put you straight on, but as you get better they have less to say as you've got most of it right and might just give you a couple of pointers.

Some times you get lucky and get someone really good, as we did at Donington a couple of years ago when a young lady instructor working for Focused Events, struck a deal with three of us in the garage to use her services (oooh er missus) She normally worked on bikes and knew Donington like the back of her hand, and showed us blobs of paint and odd skid marks for braking and turn in points, knocking seconds off our lap times straight away. She was also as cool as a cucumber, as she didn't even look up from her clip board when I ran out of talent and got it all locked up going into the Melbourne hairpin.

I asked Dino the other day about getting better instruction, but he said it's difficult as most of the instructors are getting paid by the day, and lose interest one you've learned to turn the wheel left and right in the correct places, and there's not a lot in it for them to be going a lot quicker. Also Pro drivers are either excluded from instructing under their contracts, or are unwilling to put themselves at risk in a car and/or driver they don't know - which is fair enough.

Cheers Ed. So it might be a better option to bribe Colin with some cake?  :P  I'd bribe you or Rob or anyone else who is quick too but I have no idea what the currency would be!

As far a Combe at least goes, it might be better for me to follow one of you quick guys, take your lines and see if I can stay anywhere near in touch with you. Gotta be the fastest way to learn Combe I would think?
Title: Re: Castle Combe trackday Mon 5th October
Post by: sanzomat on 23, September, 2015, 01:40:27 PM
I'd certainly rate the instructors at Palmersport in Bedford - pushed you to go faster and faster and didn't give up until you'd spun and then made you explain why and if you gave the right answer made you go faster still and get it right. (and that's in their cars). When I did a Combe day (it was about 8 years ago so things may have changed) the instructors seemed more concerned about looking after the cars than making you go faster! I expect they see quite a few numpties on corporate days though. Might be different in your own car, but I suspect only if there was good rollover protection and harnesses!

A few years ago (when V reg was new so must have been 1999?) I got an invite to a Vauxhall day at Donington to launch the facelifted Vectra and part of the deal was 3 laps in Vectra SRi with an instructor then a hot lap with the instructor driving. Subject to the traffic my guy was keen to let me have a proper go so did the parade lap trick of having me hang back on the boring bits to have some fun on the twisties.

At that time I was quite into the ToCa touring cars PC game which was supposed to be one of the most realistic games in terms of driving physics and track layouts. I'd been practicing for the Vectra day on the PC and it was remarkably true to the real life track. The instructor said I was using the wrong line coming into Redgate and showed me the right way to take it. I tried that line on the PC game when I got home and it improved my time on the game too!

2 Things to take from that. 1) You can learn tracks quite well from a good driving sim game like ToCa. 2) However well you think you know the track a good instructor will likely find you a bit of extra time!

Well I got as fas as registering with them the other day (Motorsport Events that is). Still not sure how my shouder and elbow will be and don't want to chuck £200+ down the pan. Plus I have other things to figure out Colin, like how do I get my track tyres and fuel to the track and home again for one. Plus tools and a jack etc.

It's not far off now and my car has no tow bar so can't even hire the trailer to get the car there as it stands. I'm new to all this don't forget, you guys can do it with your eyes shut I bet?

I'd have to drive there in the ASBO with road tyres and a can of fuel or two in the passenger seat. Though it does have a set of Yoko Advans on wheels that I assume are road legal. Obviously the slicks would not be and I've never driven on slicks before so have no idea what to expect.

No problem FHO.  I'll pick all your kit up the day before, and chuck it in the truck and take it up the next day. SORTED 8)

Plus the fact, my head gasket is still a bit dodgy and might not last the day, so when I knacker my car I can drive yours instead...... what's the worst that can happen :o ;D

A trailer is possible, Go Inspire is hiring.  I have a tow car too!.  Fuel is possible, I have cans.  I can even volunteer a driver if you arm can't do it.  You can sit in the passenger seat and relax - (but not a lot)

How good is that offer!  :o ;) 8) :P

Thanks Ian  ;D 8)  Current situation is that I have fuel and jerry cans (had them at Combe last time in the 4x4), so no issues with the actual items as such, it's more logistics than owt else.

I could get a tow bar fitted to the 4x4 and then hire the Go! Inspire trailer, but atm am trying to get my mate to drive it up as support vehicle for me like last time and drive the ASBO there myself (part of the fun!!).

Current flies in the oinment are 1. He has to be at work at 3pm and 2. That is the day I am having my shoulder injected again at 5pm. I can try and re-arrange the shoulder jabs, I'm sure that is do-able, as for the support issue (fuel, wheels, jack etc etc) I am still working on that.

Or I just drive there on road tyres with 2x20 litre cans and 1x5 litre can aboard and do the day on those tyres? Not ideal though is it? That would give me 60 litres total including driving to and from the track as the tank only holds about 15 litres.

But mostly it would depend on how my shoulder is between now and then. I only got 38 laps in at Combe last time because of the pain it was giving me. That worked out at about £7.00 a lap I think!  :o

I have tried to get it injected sooner but no dice with the docs  :(

Thank you Ed, muchos grassy-arse (what you tend to get of you come off at Combe in a kit car!)

I may well PM you and Colin about this later mate.

Cheers.

Spoke to Natasha at Motorsports Events (she was in the middle of Abingdon airfield at the time on another track day!)

Very helpful, am booking a half day so my shoulder can cope. Will be doing the morning session guys. Thanks for the great idea Colin! I guess if anyone else wants to do a half day they could too. They don't advertise it but they do them if they have spare capacity it seems. £100.00 so they don't even hike up the price, very good.

3 of us? Guess who'll be getting the bronze medal then  :(

I'm hoping to be quicker tha last time tho, in fact it will be interesting (if the weather is dry) to compare my times (not allowed to time I know - go to the naughty step again FHO!) from the last Combe day.

Ha ha!

The weather is looking good but will it last right thru til next Monday? I hope so!!   :)

If my shoulder lasts out I may even see if I can pay for the 2nd half of the day actually on the day and stay til the end  8)

Why not book a half day instead then people? :)

Yes and if you share it with a mate/partner (it's £20 for an extra driver) it only works out at £60 each for half a day blatting round Combe! That is CHEAP!!!  :D

You can choose the morning session or the afternoon. I think it's approximately 9am til 1pm and 1pm til 5pm

You need to call the number on the site and ask for Natasha though as half days are not listed on the site itself.

It's gonna be dry! Next weather front most likely day to arrive is Wednesday. But as you guys say, it does seem to change every day, but that's UK weather for you!

I think we will be ok tbh. It's still due to be sunny on Sunday, what can possibly go wrong overnight!  ::)

I have a new set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on mine atm!  ;D  If no rain it'll be Yoko Advans. Gonna give the slicks a miss no matter what weather - too advanced for me at this stage (translation - I wont be going fast enough to keep them hot and sticky between corners!!!!!!)  :D :P

In theory it will increase your top speed and acceleration so should reduce your laptime - in theory! It's not as bad as you think, I would never go back to having a screen tbh. The only worry I ever have is stones thrown up from vehicles in front, shouldn't be a problem on track though.

Worth a try Colin, see how your lap times compare to last time round.

I'm still having major doubts about the state of my head gasket for the trackday, as I'm now sure it's failing due to the roughness of the standard block that wasn't designed for the use of MLS gaskets, but that will be a complete engine strip to get it machined properly.

I'm still going on Monday coz I've paid, but will have to keep an eye on the temps and the small oil leak I have. I could be riding shotgun with Moleman and FHO sooner rather than later ::)

Ed, Colin, etc, sorry but it is loooking more and more like I wont make Combe on Monday. Can't even drive at all today. Had shoulder injected again as it is just not healing up and now it feels like I have a dislocated arm  :'(

I'll take it day by day and see how I feel but it's not far away now and atm my health in general is pants  :( :( :(

Cheers Ed. Who knows, I may wake up tomorrow and feel human again. Good luck with the head gasket, I hope it holds out for the day for you.

If your block is not flat and true is what you need done called 'decking the block'? I was told the same thing would need doing to my cossie block in time. The guy did explain how it happens to go out of true, something to do with the way the pistons move I seem to recall him saying. I have it in an email somewhere, buried deep in the lost depths of my inbox!

Well it was a good dry sunny day. Car went well as normal.  8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Ok maybe just a little damp now & then.  ;)

Ok is was really wet where a few of us aquaplaned doing about 50mph along the straights.  :o  we would have been better in a speed boat.  ;D  We did do some good laps in the end but it was like driving on ice & very slow up to normal so I didn't do that many laps. It did take a lot of concentration even going that slow but it was nice to test out my wet driving skills.  :)

As Colin has said, it was a bit of a challenge today, as it was really a case of tip toeing round and trying not to end up in the barriers, as any throttle input got the car out of shape. At least both of us came away without ant damage, and had the added bonus of not using much fuel or wearing any tyres out.

Big thanks to Iancider, FHO & Flipper for calling in to give some moral support - we needed it!

Strangely nobody asked for a passenger ride today :o

Yeah it was a real shame for you guys. With the size of some of the rivers on track we could have brought our swimming cossies instead! I got a few very short vids of Colin and Ed coming (steadily!) round Camp Corner in the one brief not-so-wet moment after lunch, I will try and see if I can get them to upload from my phone sometime though there's not much to see really as the guys had to take it pretty slow just to stay on track!

I have a couple of videos too Col but it does look slow. In one though you an hear the change in the sound of your car as you hit the straight on the approach Avon rise. I think it might have been the sound of the new (or old, I forget which way round it is) tarmac in the wet?
