Title: Help with Bonding
Post by: Richard on 27, June, 2009, 11:09:20 PM
Now there's a title.

Not getting to it for a few weeks but wanting a few more opinions folks.

Best ways to bond GRP to metal ?
What do I need ?
Things to avoid ?

What should I ask ? and of course what the answer is.

Thanks in advance.

Get some of this stuff (http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/polyurethane-adhesivesealant-poly-481-p.asp) and some disposable gloves (unless you like the tarred and feathered look).

On structural parts don't use sealant over powder coating or paint - sand/grind it off first.

Make sure there's a key on both surfaces.

Make sure both surfaces are clean (brake cleaner will do this).

If rivetting make sure you use large head rivets to spread the load to help to avoid cracking.

If bolting use penny washers where possible for the same reason.

If you get that sealer on you then brake cleaner or petrol will get it off again.

If you wait until it sets you can cut most of it off and use petrol to clean up any excess.

I think they're the basics. For things that are just going to be held on with sealer use tape or clamps to hold everything in place while the sealer sets.

Oh yes. Wear old clothes. You'll thank me later!

Thanks, usually work on the cars in overalls with old clothes on underneath as a standard approach, even if not intending to do a dirtier job somehow always do.

That site looks to have a lot of items on it.
