Title: Isle of wight trip out.
Post by: Moleman on 07, February, 2013, 08:40:31 PM
Since we have a new member from the Isle of wight I joked to Garry H that we could all pile down there in convoy, spend the day driving around the island & crash at Garry's house, then spend the day there & drive back in convoy.

To my surprise this seems to be quite popular with some of you guys :o  Though don't think Gary really would like us to crash there.  ;D

So as a heads up I was thinking this might cool thing to do over the summer.  8)
so would like to know If anyone really would be interested in doing something like this?

So if you think this will be something you would like to do can you let me know if you would be interested? what month is good for you? What sort of accommodation you would preffer?

For example = I'm interested, Any weekend from June to end of september. Don't mind what type of accommodation but not camping as the girlfriend don't do camping.  :)

Depending on what response I get then we can start the process of narrowing down dates, accommodation etc.
I know this ain't gonna be easy to please everyone but I will try to do something that will be to everyone's liking,What sort of thing you think would be good to do there? budget & tastes if this is possible?  ;D

I'm interested and happy with camping and/or pubs for food etc!

I'm easily pleased so happy to go with the flow as well though

I work down near the Portsmouth ferry so any weekend should suit me with just a couple of exceptions in Aug.

I like the idea and am pretty flexible on times.

I don't think we should be scaring our new member though and keep ourselves to ourselves ;)

Make sure you all come back - wouldn't want us ending up with IOWKCC  :o

I'm game but don't do camping.....probably b+b.

June through to August is free but we need a settled spell which might be tricky in England.

I'll see the rest of  "the Somerset Chapter", they will probably go.

We'd be up for it assuming I'm here. Be nice to see the IOW again after so many years. We'd be B&B though as jan can't handle camping on medical grounds :)

I am all for going over, may be we could line it up with an event over there at the same time,
B & B would work as the average age is creeping up!!

Time / date not an issue

Post by: Moleman on 10, February, 2013, 04:32:08 PM
Well it's looking like we will be looking for a B&B with a secure carpark then.  :D
There seem to be alot of B&B's in Sandown, Shanklin & ventnor. I don't know much about the Island but all three places look ok.
What sort of price are people wanting to pay? You can pay from £30-£130 on average. I have done afew searches for ferry prices, I can't seem to get the southampton to cowes prise but the others seem to be about £64 return for two people in a car in July.
I was wondering if anyone who's been there could recomend some B&B's that they know are ok or even good secure car parking?
Alot of the sites I've looked at so far just say ample parking but not how well it's secure?
Surggestions are most welcome.   8)

Last time i went there, the hotel arranged the crossing at a vastly reduced rate.

In fact the 3-day break was so cheap i don't know how they did it for the money.

The locals must get concessions with the Ferry Company for tourism......maybe if we all use the same accommodation we can get a deal between us.

I'm hoping to get us all in the same accomodation to make it easier to book. That's a good idea to see if they can book the ferry for us. 8)

The Caterham lot on Blatchat are doing 2 nights accom, all food and ferrys for £146pp at The Shanklin Hotel.

They've got greater numbers on their side but might be a good starting point.
Title: Re: Isle of wight trip out.
Post by: Moleman on 10, February, 2013, 08:37:11 PM
That is a good idea. I will give them a call tomorrow. What do people think off a 2 night stay instead of one?
We could drive down friday afternoon, do some site seeing on the sat then drive back on the sunday?
Or stick to drive down early sat morn, spend the afternoon site seeing then sun morn somemore site seeing then drive back sunday evening?
Don't mind which? I will see what price the hotel gives us for the 2 options.
In the meantime can anyone who is interestd let me know which option they would rather do?
Thanks.  :D

So far we have 7 - 8 maybe cars so i will see what they quote me for 7 double rooms in July. Just as a rough guild to cost.

Hi guys and girls this iow trip seems to be picking up speed. If we can find out numbers, dates etc I can look at finding accomodation to see if I can get a good deal. I might be able to get local paper interested, bit of publicity for the club maybe.
Let me know what you think.

Hi Garry.
Anything you can do will be a great help. I'm just sounding out numbers & costs at the mo as until then we won't get any firm commitments.
I don't know what part the island you are from but I was going to be asking you your imput on the short list of hotels/B&B's when we got that far as to your local knowledge about if they are ok & what the parking situation would be for 8 or so kitcars?

Though I will stress it ain't a problem if you can't answer any of my questions as I relies you don't need to book hotels there as a rule & we are not normally in the habit of getting new members to do some research for us after just joining.  :-[
Feel free to make any inquiries on our behalf  as any help & surggestions from everyone will be really gratefully received.   ;D

Ps don't feel like you have to mind.  :-[
As I may end up asking you futher questions & advice from you due to your local knowledge about Best time of year to book this? Good places to visit & runs around the island while there?
Though a photo shoot of the cars parked in front of Osborne House might be kind of cool for the club.  8)
Many thanks colin.

I do the trip from Bristol to Portsmouth every week so I don't mind mapping out a slightly more scenic route rather than just hurtle down the M4.

Title: Re: Isle of wight trip out.
Post by: Moleman on 11, February, 2013, 08:30:13 PM
Thats sound good to me Grin-alot. ;D

Ok I have spoken to the Shanklin Hotel & they will offer us £146per person for 2 nights night B&B & dinner, including ferry return tickets.
That was for 8 cars  with 8 double rooms. I said each car had 2 people & wanted a double room per car. This is only a estimate so if you don't need a double room it will still be ok & may be cheaper or if you do & only one person will be in the double room then you only pay £146 for your room.

This is for the two nights (fri & sat) If some guys just want to do the one night then we can book the sat for them so we can still be in the same Hotel.

I have asked for any of the 1st 3 weekends in july before the schools breakup & they said all these are ok at the moment but after that it is quite full.
All this is subject to If Garry can get a better deal with his local knowledge.  :D

What do you think then guys?
Can everyone who is interested let me know very soon (Even anyone who hasn't replied but may consider going) as our choise of dates might end up getting smaller

1= is the price ok or would you rather somewhere else & not pay that much for 2nights?
2=is july ok if not what is best for you?
3= is 2nights ok or would you rather meet up with us on the saturday?

All we would have to pay once we have desided is £50 deposit per room.

Please give me your honest thoughts on this & your answers to my questions, & choise of dates.
I won't be offended if there is anything your not happy with as I can't change it if I don't know. :)

Think Dixie and his wife are also very interested.

I should be good for July, the cost suits me (I assume that includes good weather) and I'm not sure if I want to bring the wife or not!

Hopefully i'll have a 5 speed box fitted in time for this so I can look forward to slightly improved fuel economy, less noise and a bit more comfort!

I will just send her off to a spare or something for the saturday while we are going around the Island.  ;D

Hi guys & girls,   Sorry i havent been on here last few days. Things going on etc. Looks like its gaining momentum.  As you know my kit cars not together and wont have the time to do it before you are over so I have invested in another one! Just got it today, a Ford Spartan in burgundy & cream. Needs a quite alot of  work to get her up to scratch but at least me and my other half will be able to join the convoy! We are looking forward to you all coming over and seeing all your cars too!  Still looking into accomodation for you and will let you know best prices I can get. Will also try to book good weather for the weekend lol
Cheers Garry.

I have spoke to the Shanklin Hotel today & depending on if Gary H can come up with anything better with his local knowledge this is where we are at.

They have put these double rooms on hold for us.
For 12th & 13th July - 1, me +1
                                2, Grin +1
                                3,Sumo v8 +1
                                4,Foggy
For the 13th July -      1, Gaffa +1
                                2,Paintman +1
                                3,Dixie +1
                                4,Stupott +1

With Yellowbelly as a maybe & fullpint coming down for the day on saturday.

They are giving me a price for the double room with & without partner with return ferry for the single night this monday along with double room for both nights without partner so we have prices to suit everyone.

Whatever the cost we will need to put down a £50 deposit which is for the room & ferry crossing. Which they have said would be best to pay sooner than later as the rooms are easy to hold but they can't hold the ferry tickets.

So once I have all the details from Shanklin Hotel on Monday (or if Garry knows of any other better Hotel)
I will start a new tread with all the details & who is going on what day & if there is anyone else who would like to go?
We probably would be able to add people on later but they may have to go on a different ferry crossing due to the time of year.
I will also be wanting people to send me cheques or a payment through Paypal for the £50 deposit. The details of that I will give you through pm next week. So i can do the group booking for us all.
Hope this is ok with everyone? feel free to let me know any concerns you might have.
Colin.

Do we have to provide registration/car details?  The reason I ask is that if the weather's that bad can I swap to a tintop and still come?

I expect the ferry company will ask for those.
Think you can buy an open ticket for the day which means you
can just turn up and drive on if there is room.
It will be dry!! I will take my brolly haha

Title: Re: Isle of wight trip out.
Post by: Moleman on 12, March, 2013, 08:25:54 PM
I will be getting more info tomorrow but here is the latest update.
For two nights B&B will be £146 per person based on two people sharing a double room & in one car for the ferry return ticket. so £292 in total.
For one night B&B will be £95 per person based on two people sharing a double room & in one car with ferry return ticket. so £190 in total.
For one night B&B will be £95 per person with a extra £30 charge for one person in one car on the ferry. so £125 in total.
They didn't send me the quote for one person for two nights which I will get tomorrow but I'm gessing £146+£30ferry charge. so £176 (just a gess).

Also car info can be changed & is not a problem if your car changes between now & july.   ;D

Am I right in thinking everyone wants a double room with double occupancy?

Last thing I need to arrange is the ferry crossing, so what time are people thinking? Thinking about on the Friday going from Lymington and then we can drive via the new forest.
Also the people going Saturday what time would you like the ferry crossing? Please let me know as soon as possible. So I can do all the final plans and I will start a new thread with all the details and then I will be asking for the £50 deposits, this covers room and ferry crossings.

URGENT INFO PLEASE!!!  :D :D :D :D
Hi guys can you please let me know a rough time you would like the ferry crossings & if you are happy with crossing at Lymington or would rather a different location?
So I can start a new tread with all the final details & start collecting the deposit money as alot of hotels are getting booked up & they won't hold our rooms forever.
I have been trying other hotels but haven't found anything cheaper that isn't fully booked.
Many thanks Colin.
