Title: Every 3rd Sunday Afternoon meet.
Post by: Moleman on 14, September, 2014, 08:56:02 PM
After talking to some of you guys over the last few meetings I propose we will do a every 3rd Sunday afternoon meet in a place of interest where we just drive to a nice spot where we can have a coffee & cake then do what we like for the rest of the afternoon depending on the weather.

What do you think?

Suggestions on where to meet will be most welcome.

Sunday or Thursday? If Sunday, sounds good to me although car might be off the road soon for a few tweaks, but will try. I'm a relative newcomer to the area and so probably better for others to suggest places to go, but Cheddar Gorge is always worth a trip out in my book.

Would try and get to some, especially if you keep it going during the autumn and winter months if the weathers not too bad.

Did someone mention cake...!! :D

Sounds like a brilliant idea, the further North is better for me in a selfish not driving to many motorway miles kind of way

Damouk makes a good point,

Maybe this event should wander around a little so that everybody can attend over time.  Coffee and cake could be challenging on Sunday because everything is geared for Sunday Lunch but National Trust Cafes might meet the bill but most NT location close in late October.

North of Bristol possibles:  Wotton under-edge, Westonbirt aboretum, there are loads of great village pubs.  Extend the idea all around Bristol for other venues.

I was thinking this would be in a different place each time. I should of made that a bit more clear. Sorry guys.
So suggestions of where we could meet from anywhere near & around Bristol up to roughly an hours drive would be great.

Possibly to save a little bit of "Where are we going this time? Suggestions Please!" becoming a monthly thing, once we have 3 or 4 good spots to start from then we just se those and rotate them. ::)

Oops another one,

The Woolpack at Slad near Stroud. Hope the link works - no web-site

This was poet Laurie Lee's "Cider with rosy" local.  Its is small and we would fill it but it is lovely and the view is perfect.  Nice terrace at the back if there is some Autumn sun.  Been there, done it, recommended.

Another suggestion for this direction is the Salutation in Berkeley  http://www.the-sally-at-ham.com/
This pub has won a number of CAMRA awards

I like this one.  Its quite a list.  We had better start doing the rounds cos there is only 12 third-Sundays in a year and one of those is going to be Christmas!

Well it is the first 3rd Sunday this week but I'm not able to come out & play the weekend sorry.

So I will give you all some homework for the Sunday. Check out some nice places to go in your area.  ;)

I will start it next month Do a little check of what has been put up then pick one. From then on I will keep checking what has been suggested on the list & pick another one from a different area. By some point we will have plenty of places we will like doing a run out on a Sunday afternoon.  8)

Paintman and I visited Shearwater a few weeks ago.  They have completely redecorated the café and do a great breakfast in lovely grounds.  The owner is a petrol head and welcomes all cars and bikes.

He also has a Facebook page, but as I don't do FB anymore, I don't have the link.

Iancider suggested one venue as the Burrington Inn Burrington Coombe - John the owner is a good friend of mine, so I might be able to get some discount or some cake thrown in, he is car mad too which helps. Let me know if that venue makes the final list and I'll have a word - I see him about every other day.

That spot as with many is of course the start of a great route over the Mendips or up through Blagdon Coombe if you take the Bath Road right out of the bottom of Burrington Coombe.

Good idea Maverik,

Have a word with him  - it could be a good starter this one.  I know it is popular with the Apple-county kit car club too.  Goodness you have been in for a day and you are already an organiser!  Great start.

Shearwater Lake café on edge of Longleat Estate near Warminster.

Nice place for a walk around the lake and forest.  There's is also fishing and boating.

Petrol-head owns it and has invited us to come and park in the café grounds (can't usually) and he will
advertise it for people to come and look at the cars......all day breakfast available!! ;D

Disagree Paintman,

I found it a delightful pub and there are two car-parks.  Most people only find the small one outside the post-office but the castle car-park 100 yards away is good for over 100 cars.

Trouble is, the Castle Car Park is well out of view from the pub on the other side of the river and I know a lot of people
on the forum would not be happy leaving their cars there for the local kids to "admire"......least I wouldn't.

I've worked in the pub for a couple of weeks and I know the village well.

OK. I have looked at a few of your suggestions & the first one for October will be the one Dixie has suggested. I will set up a new thread for this event.

November will be North Bristol so suggestion for north side will be grateful please.   8)

I will be looking at some of your suggestions that you gave me but would also like some more now.  :)

We will have to take into consideration the weather as it will only get colder from now on but we may get luck like today.  8)

So get your thinking caps on people. 8)

On a similar theme, there is Woodford Lodge on Chew Valley lake for Sunday lunch or Afternoon tea. It is a nice view from the restaurant and a wise place to be when it gets bleak!  good parking and just a few speed bumps on the way in. http://www.bristolwater.co.uk/leisure/chew-valley-lake/woodford-lodge/ (http://www.bristolwater.co.uk/leisure/chew-valley-lake/woodford-lodge/)

Or for something completely different but only on a Saturday - an excellent nostalgia museum with tea shop, £8 a pop for adults and well worth it.  It is one of those places you have to see to believe - near Portbury - just off the the A369

www.oakhamtreasures.co.uk/ (http://www.oakhamtreasures.co.uk/)

Also another day outing novelty idea - how about a day cruise on a canal boat.  There are day boats that take 8-10 in comfort with an on-board loo and a stove to heat the bacon rolls and the tea.  It is possible in the longer days to get to south of Birmingham (with no locks and back) and with a full complement it would be about £10 each and you can convoy several boats. http://www.anglowelsh.co.uk/dayboats.php (http://www.anglowelsh.co.uk/dayboats.php) or Brookline boats near Worcester have been willing to day - hire one of their bigger boats http://brookline.co.uk/ (http://brookline.co.uk/)

Dress warmly and a canal boat ride is just delightful in winter!

I will be seeing John, Burrington Inn, tomorrow night so will talk the idea through with him, sorry I have not been back to this topic fir six weeks or more but I have been particularly busy. I'll post any ideas that John suggests on Tuesday.
