It was'nt till I saw your post that I did think about that as an option.

Trouble is, I dont really possess your level of skill in fabricating things.

Food for thought though as a project for the winter now. Reverse aint such a big thing, especially when you have club members happy to do the pushing ;D

I take it 4th is 1 to 1 straight through?

pretty much 1.1

The bm box I'm using for my escort, I'm useing 4th, but thats just for ease of having a little gear stick, and besides, I'm building mine for round town, so the higher (lower?) gear is a bit more practical for me.

as to engineering level.....I'm sure if you put your mind to it, anyone can do what I do, or failing that, you only have to take the idea to someone who can?

depending on how many mating surfaces I can get out of the bm conversion, I might end up offering these modified boxes for sale...or exchange for services etc, I'm always up for a trade is me :)

Very interesting, I may research this further for the winter. The Toyota box looks quite small and neat. Maybe stronger than a dedicated bike reverse box, certainly cheaper.

I guess its all about making something like this fit.

So you keep it in 4th as all the other gears are taken out apart from reverse. So how does the gearstick feel? Are 4th and reverse where they used to be, but anywhere else the stick flopping all over the place?

well, you aint thinking straight, think more macgyver than off the shelf.

Obviously there are at least 3 gears missing, so the lever would have nothing to press against, so you just dont select these gears, so personally I'd fit a gate, so only the forward and reverse can be selected.

4th is forward, so you have your 5/6 forward gears,

reverse is a about the same ratio as first, so you would select reverse and 5th or 6th on the bike engine.

someone once asked me if you would use all 6 gears in reverse...?????, some people just cant think out side the box, first gear with reverse selected would have about 5mph backwards at 12,000 rpm :)

and if that doesnt boil your noodles, lets say you were going car engined, summit with a bit of torque.

if you put a standard gear box on the back of the engine, you would have your standard 5 gears,,, top gear being roughly 1 to 1.

but, now, if you took another gearbox, and reversed it , so you basicly you have 2 prop shaft flanges bolted together, then another prop from the input shaft to the rear wheels, this would give you a further 5 gears.

now if the second box is left in fifth, this would be 1.1, just as if you had a solid prop, but if you then selected fourth on this box, the input shaft (now facing backwards) would turn faster, faster again in 3rd, second and finally first gear it would have the rear wheels going 400 mph, at 1000 rpm :)

Ha, I thought I was thinking straight before you blinded me with science there ;D

Of course this is not an off the shelf item, its been butchered to hell, I realise that.

What I dont fully undertand is the ratios, I certainly wouldent want to upset mine as it is set perfect for me. I would require an almost exact 1 to 1 in foward.

I'm not sure I would be able to select 5th or 6th at a standstill so are you saying you would have to drive the car backwards going through the gears?

As for the rest of it, Einstein would be proud of you ;)
