Is this Westie SE good value?

Since posting on here and getting some advice I've been looking online at various cars. This one struck me as in great condition and quite a lot of car for the money.

Before I think about taking this much further, I'd be interested on any views regarding whether there is anything blindingly obviously wrong with this car.

If it does seem reasonable, would anyone be interested in coming down to Taunton with me to have a look?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi Daz,

Welcome to the club,
It will prob pay you to meet up with a few of the members and have a sit in their cars, I'm no expert and I dont know your build but some of these cars are extremely tight to fit into. 50% of them would be unsuitable to me

I saw this ad and thought the same thing. It does seem to represent good value. Crossflow powered Westies are cheap but there's nothing wrong with them. That age of chassis and the tunnel could be slimmer meaning more room but as it's a narrow it will be snug. The narrow has a rep for superior handling. Can't sing the praises of a Westy enough and in the hands of the able driver are fairly rapid. It looks a tidy car.

Thanks guys, I realise the engine isn't the biggest but I am not too concerned about it being fast; nippy is what i want to achieve (being the law abiding citizen that I am).

I contacted the seller and he tells me that it has never been raced, low mileage and lots of supporting documents.  I am hoping to pop down to see him but thought i'd seek the wisdom of those that know about these things; rather than drive down there only to find out that it is a bit pants.

erm ? maths never your strong point ?  :-*

Well worth a look.  Down Taunton way so perhaps one of the Apple boys could help you with a viewing or they may even know the car. Not going that way in the near future otherwise would have a look for you.

Thanks for the advice, i'm going to pop down and have a look on Friday, spoke to the seller and everything seems great so a bit concerned/excited that I will be parting with some cash sometime sooner than I expected!

Good news,  pop a couple of ramps, chucks and jack in your boot so you can have a good look under the car.

How did the viewing go on Fri? Are you now the proud owner?

David H

Looks like it's been sold to someone! Nice colour, I quite like blue myself.

Grin-a-lot

Yes indeed, now the proud owner of that car!

Just driven up from Taunton to Bristol and it was great, a really exhilarating drive, smiled all the way up the A38!

First few "issues":

Speedo reads about 10mph too low (ended up doing approx 22mph in a 30 zone which explains why I was getting parped at!

Dropping more oil than I expected (might appreciate some advice on that one).

Thermostat says engine reaching 110degC before fan cuts in, seems to get quite hot quite quickly when driving round town.

They're only small things really and certainly not terminal. Get them ironed out and I'll be well chuffed!

Here's my baby (taking a quick break somewhere near Taunton):

Well done that man, this is where the fun begins. Oil leak, you probably got a cork sump gasket, plus rocker gasket, these are notorious for leaking. With the sump gasket, you just might need to tighten the sump bolts up. maybe a quarter to half a turn on each one. Over heating, I get exactly the same problem, in traffic she goes up to about 110. I take it you got a viscuss and electric fan. With my electric fan,I got it on a on/off switch on the dash board,so I can switch it on/off as required,it seems to work quite well. Can't help you with the speedo-hav'nt come across that problem. Had a look at the pictures on the for sale add, looks very nice - well done.

Richard

Well done  !

Is Mr Frustrated now Mr Grinny ?

OCD potential,   Dave H you may have an OCD buddy.

Well done Daz :)

May the tinkering begin!! Look forward to seeing you out and about.

Yeah the "Frustrated Driver" username is now obsolete sadly, that was probably a bit short sighted of me!

Thanks for the advice about the gaskets, they are both cork and it looks like the sump gasket is the guilty party.  Also looks like he's tried a patch repair and failed.

Hoping to join you next Saturday so will pick your brains then too!

Steve

Hi
Just a thought, your speedo problem could be that its a Westfield electronic speedo that hasn't been calibrated properly... when they are fitted there is a procedure you have to go through to set them up...

Oh and nice car for a really good price...

Hopefully see you Saturday....
