Engine Rebuild or New Engine?

I have just found out that my existing Ford Cross Flow engine is not looking so healthy.

I have been given two options:

1) To refurbish my existing engine which will include a new block, new sump, new rockers etc to racing standard -fully done for £1800 or

2) Buy a new Ford Zetec Engine fully fitted for £4000.

Firstly, do these amounts seem reasonabl and secondly does anyone have a view on the best option.  I dont have bottomless pockets!

Thanks

Ian

My choice would be a new Zetec but £4000 sounds steep for a standard one fitted.

Have a search around for new crated engines, you should be able to pick one up for £650-£700 quid Somtimes with some of the extras on like this one..

Thanks for your response.

Funnily enough i have seen that one today.  he guy in the garage said that by the time he does the engine manangement system and fits it, it would come in at close to £4000.

Do you know anyone who could fit that engine for me at a sensible price?

4000 does sound a lot BUT some of us can do this work ourselves. Changing engines to a different type is quite involved and always ends up being a lot more work than first expected.

Take off VAT and cost of all parts and materials and there is enough to pay someone to do a decent Job on your car. This is not a weekend job.. I have done this twice myself and to do it properly is time consuming.

However, does that price include EVERYTHING needed to get your car running Inc manifolds, exhaust, mounts etc etc

The other thing to consider is if you love your car enough to spend 4000 on it. You could sell it, add 4000 to the budget and probably buy a better spec car. I get quite attached to my cars so I don't mind but everyone is different. I've been in your shoes before and I decided to develop my car. Many wouldn't although I have learned a lot and quite enjoyed the process

Everyone has a different opinion on this sort of thing so have a look at your car ownership and what you get out of it and what you want out of it. Could you attack this yourself? There is plenty of advice at hand....

What is actually wrong with your engine.  Is it the bottom end,or is it smoking with general cylinder wear?

You say refurbish existing engine with a new block, sump etc.... that sounds like Trigger from 'Only Fools & Horses' He still has the same brush from when he started his job20 years ago, it's only had 10 new heads and 6 new handles!  ;D
