It occurred to me recently that my westie is probably quite easy to nick if you are a tea leaf with a bit of sense.  Now that i've stopped spraying oil everywhere it makes it a highly attractive vehicle to steal now of course!

I was thinking about hiding a sneaky switch somewhere within reach of the driver just to act as a bit of a killswitch; which will deter the majority of naughty people.  I figure that immobiliser systems are probably beyond my fitting skills (and cost a fair bit).

Does anyone have any ideas on which circuits I might be able to stick a switch in
to stall a prospective thief?  The obvious one for me is to break one of the wires near the ignition coil and hide the switch somewhere else...

Hi Sir Grin

A battery cut-off switch may suit your requirements.
Have a look at Car Builder Solutions on-line catalogue, under "Electrical".
www.cbsonline.co.uk.

Agreed, a battery cut off switch is the way to go. It isolates the battery completley so that no circuits work.

Not only that but it adds fire prvention safety too when leaving the car un attended - just on the off chance there was an electrical fault. Also usful in an accident again by isolating the battery preventing sparks etc.

Personally I would go with a FIA approved one as it has a separate circuit for the ignition, but if wiring is a little daunting then a straight forward isolater is fine.

Standard http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/battery-cut-off-switch-standard-version-bsstd-1005-p.asp

Shop around though, prices can vary a lot.

I have a battery cut off switch on my Indy, Its a good idea but if someone knows that you have on it's easy to find a key as they're all the same.

I agree that they're a good idea but I would also recommend a hidden switch somewhere to interrupt the ignition circuit.

An immobiliser should be easy enough to fit. Ok you will need to cut a couple of wires, the ignition circuit usually.

What about a wireless keyfob job ? hide the receiver behind a panel, no horrible holes.

Detachable steering wheel is very effective but a bit looks a bit noticeable on the restaurant table. ::) ;D

I have brought a tracker off of EBAY.  uses a mobile phone sim card, and is accurate to about 25 yrds in rural areas and less than 10yrds in town.

Only cost £20.

Hi Mark, did you say you got discount on your insurance for having this fitted? I might consider for that alone.

Dixie

Hi Tony.

Yes mate got a 25% discount.  Dax should be done by next Friday.

Hi Mark, could you let me know the model of tracker if you got chance so I can take a look, may fit once sprayed. When are you getting the vinyl fitted.

Dixie

You got that model for £20 from China Mark? Look forward to seeing the car :)

Easiest thing i ever did was to put a hidden switch in the electric fuel pump circuit, The car would only go 100 yards or so and stop at the most conspicuous place, usually traffic lights and the thief would just run off !!!

I always fit a batt master switch for the reasons Phil mentioned, a note if you have a digital dash with volatile memory, you will need to run a fused wire directly from the batt to the Batt+ circuit of the digi device to maintain memory and settings when you isolate the battery.

The only trouble with the battery isolator is the keys are all the same and a serious car thief would have one for sure. ::)
