Title: Bristol Motor Club's Family Day at Castle Combe. 26th July
Post by: Moleman on 02, February, 2015, 08:16:03 PM
This is a good event which we go to every year. It is a good show & you get a chance to drive your car around the circuit.
It is organised by Bristol Motor club & they are doing their Family Day at Castle Combe which will be returning to its usual weekend this year, so the date will be Sunday 26th July  There will be another chance for you to take part in parade laps of this iconic circuit.  It could even be a special present for Dad as it happens to coincide with Father's Day!  Add it to your calendar now before you forget. More details will be sent out in the near future.

We have a few events on this weekend now so we will have to see which one people would like to do closer to the time.  ::)

The new day for this one is Sunday 26th July

Wow - this is choice - three things on the same weekend! BMC family day, Tyntestfield and the Bath Festival!  Spoilt for choice!

Everyone seems to have changed their dates to the same weekend.  ???

Yep and the Sunday is Summer Solstice so the Druids and Hippies wont be able to come either  :o  Father's day is the Sunday and  the Supercar show is also on in the same weekend!

Okay, idea,  ;) There is enough of us - we all split up into teams and go to all of them :P - perhaps swapping over at midday, video everything and report in on the Monday - job done! 8) 8) 8)

p.s.

Just found out that the Weston Super Mare Air Festival is that weekend as well but anybody going to Tyntesfield will be able to watch the Red-Arrows fly right overhead!

HOT NEWS!

One of the clashes on the weekend 20/21 June has been solved.  The Bristol Motor Club Family Day and Castle Combe has been moved to 26th July.

This means we can go to both the Bath Festival (was the pageant last year) and Tyntesfield with the Avenue Drivers club.  AND the BMC does not now clash with anything at the moment  8)

Moleman,  26th July Bristol Motor Club's family Day

Yes that would be good - we could exhibit the chassis and the promotional material that goes with it.

We can bring the chairslayer to put on our stand for the day & promote it. So another reason for everyone's support to go to this one. :)

Don't forget you can book parade laps for this one with no noise restrictions.  8)

Myself and Dixie were thinking of going.....he said it was good last year, the parade lap was behind a pace car doing up to
100mph :o

Not exactly a parade !!!

Count me in on this one including the parade laps pls Colin.

I notice now that on the original date of this event (June 20th) at Castle Combe is now the Classic, Kit and Retro Action Day, so there are clashes all over the place again?

Any idea who is going to what? I have my yellow drivers pass ticket for the CK&R Action Day and the names list there looks long so I guess most of us are attending that rather than Bath or Tyntesfield?

OK just to clarify.  ::)  = This thread is The Bristol motor club Family day which is being held on 26th July. The date got changed half way through the year which is why the confusion.  :D
This is a good event which we go to every year. It is a good show & you get a chance to drive your car around the circuit without the noise restrictions  8) They are parade laps but as Dixie has pointed out the car you follow dosen't hang about so you do get a little feel of what it's like to go around a race circuit.  :D

The event is free unless you want to do the parade laps which is £14

You can enter your car for this event by clicking on this link = http://bristolmc.org.uk/fsd-online-entry/

On the last page you will see this so please put for B.K.C.C. stand please in the section marked other:

Castle Combe action day is on the Saturday 20th June (just for the Saturday)
Tyntesfield house show is on both days but we are going as a club on the Sunday.

Sorry for the confusion as the dates got changed. So please fill in the form & let me know when you have done it.  :)

PS Ian I will sort out a pass for our Chairslayer & what ever crew you need me to get passes for to bring it in.  :)

I have now filled in the 26th july castle combe family day form Colin. I think you said to add the £14 to the other payment I have to give you for the castle combe kit car track day in August is that correct??

I didn't see anything on the form though that you selected to say whether you were just displaying or whether you were also doing the parade laps so how will they know?

Sadly I can't make Tyntesfield and have no idea what the Chairslayer is either!!!

There was a box to tick to say if your are just displaying or displaying & doing the parade laps. You can email them when you get your confirmation email.  :)

You have to pay them the £14 You should get a on line option & a address option to send the cheque.

The chairslayer is a temporary name for the car we are building for the disabled mate?  :)

Just been thru the form again and as ever you are correct Colin! I must have ticked the display laps option I'm sure.

I think I am losing the plot as I age mate! This week my memory has been shocking (who are you again??) It's driving me nuts, I hope I have not got dementia coming on!!

If you find a middle aged beardy guy wandering around Castle Combe looking for his kit car, help the poor sod out would you please!!  :-[

I'll check out the Chairslayer topic, sounds like a great idea guys!!

Not 100% sure but from memory I think damouk said he was coming and taking his VStorm around the track Colin.

Actually I think it was the classic, kit and retro day on the 20th June he said he was coming to! I keep getting the two mixed up!!!!

Is there any way you can add the date (26th July I think?) into the title of this topic to help the aged and feeble of mind like me Colin please? ;D

Did everyone get the instructions and entry pass from Zoe? Not so easy to pick everyone out from the list as its real names rather than forum names!

I read on the gumff that the parade laps will be held with a top speed of 50mph being controlled by a pace car! :o

Lot of cars won't get out of first gear!!...lol ;D ;D ;D

I spoke with Zoe on the phone (when she was chasing my payment :-[). She said it depends on who ends up driving the pace car. They have to say 50mph to stay within the rules for "parade laps" but it may well be quite a bit more...

Let's hope eh!!  ;D ;D

A few days back I got kinda prepared Dave, I got out the (hopefully) waterproof car cover, put it over a tin top and washed the whole thing off and let it dry in the sun (remember the sun, that big hot orange thing that used to be in the sky most days!??). It will be neatly packed in the passenger footwell for the day at Combe, where hopefully it will stay!

If it rains I will charge people 50p a ticket as a raffle to "guess what's under the cover"!! They have to be specific, make, model, colour etc, closest wins.....

PS this competition will not be open to BKCC members!!!  ;D

Atm according to Points West weather the rain is not due til later in the day and the morning will be dry, so we had better make the most of the a.m. hours methinks. Fingers crossed the forecast changes.  :) :)

We will have have to see on the day.  ::)  I will admit this one won't be much fun if it's raining. Why is it always on out door shows.  >:(

What I will say is that we will meet up at Castle combe on the day so no one is waiting around for people who won't be turning up.

So no meeting point before the show we will meet there on the day.

Why is it always on a weekend more like!!! It can rain all the week b4 as far as I'm concerned as long as it's dry on the weekends when we have car events on!!

Just a  though Colin, the rain is currently predicted from about 10am, the paddock is open at 8.45am. I can see people driving off home by lunchtime if the weather gets bad. Wouldnt it be better to make the most of the earlier dry hours and meet up beforehand at the Cross Hands, then drive there together like you originally planned but perhaps a little earlier?

As long as there is a deadline to leave the Cross Hands and everyone knows it then we wouldn't be waiting for anyone 'cos they know we will be leaving at say 8.30a.m. and that if they are late they can meet us at Combe in any case. I only say this as I can see what with the weather threatening like it is that this may in fact possibly be the best part of the whole day and the actual Combe event may be a bit of a damp squib for us kit car lot  :(

At least we would (should) be driving there in the dry and all together. If we all turn up willy nilly I can see people either driving there later (in the rain - really!!??) or more likely not going at all. Speaking for myself, as I have NO wet weather gear at all (and no windscreen etc), I will be either driving there in the dry (early a.m.) or not at all (not much choice!!).

In the meantime I will be praying to the sun god every minute from now until Sunday morning!  :D :D

I'm just voicing a view here, you may all disagree and think it's a pants idea!!! (and I know you will tell me if so!!) I am the worst early morning person in the world, so believe me it will be as hard for me any anyone to make this but I still think it's a good idea, and if the rest of the day is set to rain, I am sure people will not stay all afternoon in those conditions (especially if it is anything like today has been!!!!!!!)  :o :o :o :o

Anyone else got views on this or ideas on what we should do?? At the end of the day I see Colin as the boss here, so I am more than happy to go along with what he decides, as I said, this is just one possible view!!

Thanks for the comments mate but it doesn't really open to the public until 10 & I was planning on bringing the Go inspire Chassis but probably won't bother now unless the weather report changes.

I will still be going unless when I open the curtains & it's pouring down as there won't be anywhere to shelter from the rain. I'm still hoping they will be wrong as we have had this before & it's turned out ok.  8)

I'm still saying meet up there as I can't say if I'm bringing the Go inspire project yet until tomorrow evening.  :)

Fingers crossed the weather will be fine. 8)

Just got back from St Neots after a party. I was planning to stay reasonably sober and drive back early in the morning to catch this event. After hearing the weather forecast yesterday I decided to have a few more drinks and some!!! :P Took a slow drive back and still raining in Chippenham. I am now bored and fed up  :(. Cant even cut the lawn.

Sucks that good organization goes to waste because of the weather. Big thanks to Zoe anyway ;D

I've just got back from Combe. I have to say I actually had a great time. The weather wasn't great but not as bad as I'd feared. I'd say every hour was made up of 20 minutes of heavy rain, twenty minutes of light drizzle and 20 minutes of not raining at all. Met and chatted to a few people I'd never seen before - great how car events mean you always have something in common to start a conversation with.

My car behaved itself. A few minor roof leaks but only a few drips. The electrics held up despite some very big puddles so no repeat of the Stoneleigh problem. My alternator belt was screeching a lot and the charge light was flashing some of the time. The belt seems tight enough so either the belt has gone hard and slippy or maybe the alternator is on the way out. Only seems to be a problem in the wet, maybe lubricates the pully/belt.

I got in all three of my parade lap sessions.

1st session was a bit slow. Only 40 or so on the straights and right down to 20 for Quarry. I was just getting the hang of hanging back when the session ended.
2nd session was much faster. The car 3 in front of me built a big gap on the first lap and then used it well on the remaining 2 laps to have some fun. The 2 behind him plus me joined in the same fun and seemed to lose the car behind me. The normal racing line is very slippy in the wet, most people were taking a wide line through all the corners. As it wasn't full race speed I tried staying on the "dry" line and having some fun slipping and sliding at a relatively low speed. Quarry and tower in particular were fun - full four wheel drifts and right on the edge of spinning. Very gentle throttle and steering inputs to keep it going the right way. Very satisfying.
On my third session I arrived a bit early and found myself in a group mostly populated with Aston Martins and Porsches. In front and behind me were Boxster S's and in front of that were a Line of 5 Astons The pace car driver seemed to not want to disappoint the Aston drivers so was going fairly quick. The Aston and Porsche in front of me clearly wanted to just go fast on the straight as they hung well back from Bobbies to Camp and then disappeared off down the main straight. I was doing around 70 and they cleared off. That suited me as I then had lots of space in front of me for Quarry, Esses & Tower and I caught them again at the exit of Bobbies. The Boxster behind me couldn't keep up through that section but caught up again by Camp.  It felt right on the edge and was feeling a bit sideways/four wheel drifting quite often. Much more of a technical challenge than I was expecting for parade laps so well chuffed with the day.

They ran track sessions 2 and 3 straight into each other so people could leave early so was home before 3.

There were a few cars without roofs who braved it including a spridget with just aeroscreens and a 1930's Singer with no hood. There was only one 7 type - a red one. No weather protection at all, just waterproofs and helmets. Not sure if it was one of ours??

I just posted this on another topic sanzomat!!

Sanzomat, were you at Combe today?? I spotted the little red GTM I have seen at Queens Sq, M115 TAB, was that you?

I got there but in a different non-kit car.

There was one guy who braved it in a Ninja-engined Tiger 6, alll the way from Gloucester area, brought the car on a trailer (sensible idea).

I hope to post a pic soon.

I have to say sanzomat was right, it was a great day, I'm glad I went. I can't add much to what he said other than I have discovered in the wet a 1.8 Audi TT can easily keep up with a Mazda RX8, Honda S2000 and a Lotus Elise (which span off in fear of me.... er I mean front of me!!). We had a bloody good time though in an open kit it would have been nasty!!!  :o

The red Tiger is not a member but I have asked him to google us and the Queens Sq meet so I am expecting to bump into him on here soon enough!

It was a good day this time!! Just not if you were in a kit car, though the lads from Gloucester enjoyed themselves and so did me and my mate Matty flying round in a TT.

Good wet track experience as far as I'm concerned. Even doing only 65 or so it was pretty hairy!!!! There was A LOT of illegal hanging back going on!!

An Elise even managed to spin off in fairly spectacular style, too hard on the loud pedal while mid chicane I suspect!  :o :o 8) 8)
