There's a lot of "Bristol Cities" about but I am glad to report we have the biggest .  And the best thing is the smallest of the "Bristol Cities"  is in Texas - which just goes to prove not everything is bigger in the USA .

I would imagine that Bristol UK is the oldest, as the name is derived from the name Brigstowe, back in medieval times.

Absolutely right Sprint.  It derives from Brigstowe and the local accent put an "L" on the end and dropped the G.  As Brigstowelians learned to speak long before they could write - the name we know today stuck. 

Bristolians got everywhere being great seafarers and ventured inland too.   It seems every time they were asked to name a new place name they just said Bristol - either very proud of where they came from or maybe they were just not inventive enough
