This may be stupid? (everybody knows that) but please read.

We advertised my wife's Audi TT on eBay and Autotrader. It s now sold.

HOWEVER my wife has had a letter from Surrey police with intending prosecution for causing an accident and driving away from the accident.

This was on the m25 (when she did own the car).

Her car has been cloned. Where did they get the number plate from? Well on eBay and Autotrader I put pictures with the number plate on!!!
Never again.

We are guilty till we can prove we are innocent.
My wife was at home on her own at the time of the accident.
She has never driven on the m25 in her life.

We now have video footage of the accident and it shows its not me or the wife.
The police now say who did we lend the car to. It's our responsibility to prove who was driving the car!!!

Lucky for us the clone car has 2 exhausts silver mirrors different wheels and doesn't have the custom White/black interior so we can prove its not our car.

But if it was the same model and colour it would be even harder to prove!!!

I WOULD SUGGEST EVERYONE GETS CCTV AT HOME TO PROVE THE CAR WAS IN THE GARAGE AT THE TIME OF ANY INCODENT!

Worst part is I sell cctv amongst other things and didn't have it at home??? DOH ???

'The Gaffer'

What a nightmare. Thanks for posting and I hope you have CCTV fitted now ;)

Yep cctv fitted and working well.
You can get cameras that have a micro sd card in them. So a single camera in the garage if not doing a complete job won't set you back much!
I don't sell them! So this isn't a plug!!!
My cameras are more expensive  ;) ;)

Always get the new owner to sign your receipt with the actual time and date of purchase. A photograph is useful as well. You may have to resort to covert photo.

Hope its sorted mate.. As for reg plates!!! Trouble is loads of photos can be taken with out the owner even knowing.. Classic case is us lot at meets or events. But we cant go covering or plates all the time :( If they want to clone a car they will. CCTV is a good start.. Keep us posted on the out-come. Hope your wife is not to stressed over it..

I had a similar experience years ago, when I sold  my Escort but luckily it got sorted in the end. Still had a bo*##*ing from bill though.

There was a spate of number plate thefts not long ago. The scrotes were using them to swipe petrol. They need both plates, so I use at least 1 stick on type. Can't remove it without destroying it, so they don't bother.
