Hi :D
Can anyone recommend an exhaust silencer for my Hayabusa engine that will satify the noise regs 98/100db & not compromise the power output????

Tricky one this - it's going to have to be a large single can (typically 26 inches long and 7 inches diameter) or use a two can system.  Techcraft (Roy Lane) are undoubtedly top notch but expect to pay £300ish.  Might be worth giving the guy in Yate a try.  He used to be part of Longlife before they went downhill.  They just did a mate of mines Clio - custom mainfold back system for £300.

Thanks Adrian, not sure who you mean "guy in Yate"? MNR do a 26" x 7" quoting 92db for £150 inc del, been trying to get hold of them to ask about power loss as i can't imagine achieving that kind of db figure without sacrficing some sort of hp loss?

Finally managed to talk to Chris @ MNR the silencer has a 6" diametre  & they say that they have had the Silencers tested on a Dyno & there is no power loss and confirm they are rated @ 92db, i must admit i'm a bit dubious, to be able to achieve that db figure without loss, but he assures me they have past every circuit test they have been tried at!!Do i bite te bullet??

Adrian,

I changed the silencer on my blade BEC to a scorpion titanium one, way lighter than the original one, and most seem to have removable baffles which may help with any noise tests...

Scorpion should be able to assit in terms of noise reduction and power loss as they specialise in bike exhausts.

Once you have some info it may be worth looking at ebay, if you are lucky you can pick up one for a fraction of the price, I got mine for around £50 for one that new would have been £200+, that may be a chaper option to try and then you always have the chance to sell it for the same sort of money if it doesnt work out.

Most seem to have a universal clamp arrangement, so it shouldnt be too difficult to chnage if you need to. Our motorbike freinds do appear to change their silencers a lot, so there are normally plenty on ebay, I hope that this helps.

On my Megablade, I went from a stock Megablade silencer (hopeless) to a self-modified Westfield 7" Zetec unit.  Problem was I had to chop and change the manifold pipework, which was a real hassle.  There was not enough room to get 26" of silencer into the available gap.  Personally, on a BEC I would be sceptical about a 6" unit doing the job.

ebay may be a good answer but you wait for ages for one to appear then there's loads of people bidding.  I'll see if I can get contact details for the chap in Yate.

Might be after I'm back from from Oz next week.

Hi Rich,
I've already been down that road, i've presently have a Micron(ebay £46) which produces 126db :o managed to get it down with a Baffle to 115db, by the time i fettled it & got it down to 98db a bl**dy milk float could overtake me! ;D Just want to get it sorted now, but thanks for your reply :D

Guys,

It looks like I may need to get my noise levels checked then! A good job that the Curborough day I have just booked says you dont need to worry about noise levels...

Adrian, when I was looking there were a couple of comanies that could have made me a custom exhaust, I will try when I get home to see if I can dig the details out for you.

Thanks Rich, had some scary quotes around £300, I have a Decibel Meter if you require use of one? ;D

RMW50

Adrain,

I have sent you an e mail with the details I have managed to find. I couldn't attach the e mails so I have copied the text from them which have contact details. They were mostly midlands based (as I am a little way from Bristol), and I wasn't specific on the noise levels, but hopefully you may be able to talk to them and see what they can do?
If you are going to Stoneleigh and remember to bring the noise level meter along that would be interesting, it would be good to meet up and see your car with the busa engine, it will be my first meet as I only joined the club around Christmas.

Hi Adrian,

Hope your globe trotting went ok and u r now duly refreshed with your sanity back in check? ;D I haven't purchased an exhaust yet, so if you do find time to find out details of chap in Yate i would be grateful :D

Adrian,

Sorry, not sure where the e mail went, I just clicked on the e mail icon and typed the message.
The text below are from the e mails I still have, they may be of use...

Hi Richard, Thanks for your mail.
Building your exhaust would be no problem, the only thing stopping me giving you a firm quote is that I need to clear a few things up with you about what exactly you need.  When you get a chance perhaps you could give us a ring to take a picture and email it to us with a description.  At a guess from what I think your looking for your looking at around the £150 all in fitted mark.

Thanks, Speak soon I hope.

Steve

Hi Adrian,

Here's the details - they're not in Yate - just off J18, M4 instead ...

Infinity Exhausts – 01454 273123

Head  north on A46 from J18 on M4 for a few 100 meters, take the turn to the left and they are in the Cotswold Spring Water depot on the left at the bottom of the hill after a mile or so.

I don't know if MNR have changed their silencers, but the one that I had a couple of years ago wasn't great - it weighed an awful lot and wasn't really quiet enough for trackdays.  It also didn't come with a sensible means of mounting it - now I think about it, you were expected to clamp the tailpipe to the silencer and also incorporate some kind of mount for the car - a bit rubbish in my opinion.

I ended up getting it modified by http://www.pro-speedexhausts.co.uk/ in Cardiff.  The finished item can be seen here:

Incidentally, a chap I know has just had a full system built at Prospeed for his RGB race car and he seems suitably impressed - worth a trip to Cardiff perhaps?

Exhaust update!!
A pal of mine turned up 2day accompanied by an exhaust silencer, i had mentioned to him my problem so he had a rummage through his garage and found a very large ally exhaust silencer, he can't remember where he got it or what it came off?? Anyway i looked it over and thought its worth a try, so i made an adaptor sandwich plate, fired it up & it sounded sweet & = 102db, ran it down the road & it was perfect, infact the car seemed more responsive ;D So i inserted a 6" length of plain tube with a diameter approx half the size of the existing inner tube with no baffles attached & took another reading = 99db ;D So another test drive convinced me all was ok, infact excellent ;D ;D ;D ;D
So thanks to all for the time & trouble taken in trying to help me :D ;D :D The next step is the rolling road this should tell me if as i think all is ok!!

Adrian ;D

Hi Tim,

Yes MNR have upgraded their exhaust silencer to a 6" Dia x 24" Long and claiming 92db with no power loss!! :-\ I find it hard to believe that with that low db reading and the size of the exhaust there is not an adverse effect in performance??

Hi Adrian,

Hi Adrian,
My exhaust was built to that spec - I specifically requested their quietest option.  The 'no power loss' claim is a bit of a misnomer anyway to be honest.  What is the benchmark?  Anyway, you're sorted which is the main thing.

Hi Tim,
Thats strange, you say yours was that spec & purchased a couple of years ago, yet they say its a new design, incorporating a larger diameter silencer??? Hmm, maybe just aswell i didn't go down that route!! :o

Adrian  ;D

TimC

It could still be a new design of course i.e. materials used, construction etc.  My god it was heavy!
