this link should take you ro a site that relates to the engine number.  It should be on the block somewhere, probably between the V, I have read all about Rover V8's recently but I'm buggered if I can remember where.  Hope this site helps, if I bump into the info I was looking at I'll send you the details.  Always love the V8 noise, unfortunatly the fuel cost makes it incompatable with my life.  When I used to drive an old V8 petrol landrover ambulance, revving it up and the whole body tries to turn itself over, never fails to put a smile on my face. Never managed to use 5th gear either, had a 2 mile runway but never got near it. Cheers Paul.

Looks to be a bit of a mixture. You have the older P6 rocker covers (pre 1976) and the later viscous fan which was on the SD1 Rover (post 1976).

I can't quite make out the exhaust manifold but it again looks like SD1 Rover, as does the distrubutor.

The engine number is the way for dating the block, which is on the passanger side of the engine.

So what are you intending to do with this engine?

Thanks guys. Unfortunately, the chap selling it cannot get to the engine number as it's against the wall. I did a bit of googling and it should either be on the block by the dipstick or on the bell housing, both of which he cannot get to!

It is the 3.5 and did have an auto box fitted, apparently the guy bought it off someone who had it fitted to a Mk2 Escort :o but managed to get a 3.9 so this one was surplus to requirements!

I've had second thoughts about the son's MX6 (see previous thread) and so when this came up at a good price (as far as I can tell anyhow) I thought it might be a good investment and project as I have always wanted a V8 powered car.

I know I can get a manifold for SUs if needed once I know what block it is for sure, I don't know what DGAS carb was fitted to them originally? (in landies I think) I'll have to keep searching.

I might have a 3.5 V8 for sale soon, still in the landy (and only 76k!)

edit: That inlet manifold in the picture is for a 2 pot webber, I don't think that was standard land rover issue, some were twin SU's and others were twin Zenith's
