Hi there

Just had retest at Bristol all going well untill it came to self centering which it failed

and then Howard noticed that the front wheels were rubbing on the suspension arm ahhhhhhh

Then Howard tried to adjust the tie rods and as he was turning the tie rod it fell out the the rack and then he said there should some sort of locking device to stop it from coming out but i looked in the the sierra manual and there is no mention of any sort of locking device

so i have two questions

1 how do i make it self centre
i have tried a bit of toe out and put 36 psi in the tyres

2. is Howard right about there being a locking device where the tie rods screw into the rack?

thanks for any help

'The Gaffer'

Sorry to hear about the fail mate :(

Hope someone will come along and help you with the technical stuff.

Book the next one now.

Richard

Real shame but much better to get niggles out the way before you are driving it.

"Positive Caster" is what causes self centering, like a bike the tilt of the steering spindle should be slightly backwards.

tie rods I'd imagine a half nut to lock it in place but not really thought about it, will go stare at my pieces for you in a bit.

Richard

I'm confused on your steering, can you post a quick pic as my pieces (quick run to the garage and back) all seem to have means to keep secured.

i hope this helps richard

You can join me in the IVA entertainment then, perhaps not the thing to do.

Here's pic

Now, I've not got this far yet, but I presume the nut permits a "lock" to be put on. Maybe I should hurry up this weekend and find out !

Just wondering, who else on here has an MK Indy as the design looks a little different to mine. other "locks" can be split pins but can't imagine they'd be permitted on steering.

Got a few things to do then will go play in garage and take a PC with me (yes a good wireless signal in the garage, can't imagine how that happened  ;) )

hi richard
is the nut end on your picture where it joins the tie rod end ?

my problem is with the other end that joins onto the rack( Underneath the gaiter)  which howard says should not come apart

Probably looks something like this.

Mine is not going anywhere, can go and undo ties a bit later to see detail of how it is secured. From picture there should be some pin or something on top that looks like the locking mechanism, will check later this evening.

Maybe we can find someone who has same model source as yours Escort or something else ?

i was wondering wether  it worth while to get a new steering rack like the one below from rally design or they have them on the westfield store or do i see if i can secure it my self?

I don't know where your parts came from, so how hard it is to fix or alter.

My personal view is that like most bits on a kit car they should be safe above all else.

That steering rack is perfectly fine, I have to assume it fits with the rest of your geometry or at least you could adjust your car to suit. There are a couple of Indy's on here and one of them may be along in a bit. So, they could advise what they've done and Mark's hasn't been long finished.

Worth shopping around but not for long given your date pressure.

stupott901

It seems like howard was wrong as according to other mk owners on the locostbuilders forum the sierra rack does not have any sort of locking device to stop the tie rods coming off from the rack just tightened up i did wondered as it said nothing in the sierra manual

so i will just have take the rack apart and sort out self centering

and to convince howard he was wrong

Richard

Not so sure about that. Guess others are wiser and more experienced than I, but I would be nervous about this in the IVA regulation "General Standard" but as you are SVA, perhaps there is more flexibility, but sounds strange to novice me.

Have you got that much time to "persuade" Howard ?  Sounds like you know each other well now.

stupott901

yeah thats the problem is convincing him and dont know if i will have that much time
i could try and get a letter from ford stating that  and take the manual with me ??

i just dont know
