With all the trips coming up and after doing a 100 mile 'shakedown' in Ratbag, I really would like to swap my 4 speed escort gearbox to a type 9. As far as I know the clutch fork and cable are compatible with the type 9? I have the type 9 ready also gear extension. Problem is lifting the engine (xflo) out, 30 years ago it wasn't a big deal but I'm on my second lap now and fear I may do myself a mischief. So has any kind person got a crane available for a loan please. Retired, so can do it anyday. Can get all prepped ready for lift so 1 day should do.
Thanks Dave.

If I had the space in the garage I'd offer the use of mine, If you can wait until after Stoneleigh then should have an open slot in there. Though I did help Grin-a-lot (Darren) with his without taking the engine out.

Thanks Brian, but I wanted to try and do it before Stoneleigh as the though of going any distance with 4 gears is niggling me a bit. Doing it without taking the engine out is an option, may well do that. It might be a struggle either way but I'll have an extra shredded wheat to help things along :D. Hopefully I won't be talking in soprano after!!

Just lift the car up high enough to be able to pull the gearbox with bell-housing out from underneath, once the gearbox mounts have been undone and the prop' removed it should all tilt enough to do the swap, but you may, depending on how tight it is in there, have to also undo the engine mounts and lower on a trolley jack (but keep that under the engine ready for refitting!) Other than that it's straight forward. Lol :P
Oh, and you also may need to move the gearbox mounting plate further back ;)

Oh well, this little job has gone tits up already! :'( Took the propshaft off and found the sliding joint way too small for the output shaft on the type 9. Even if it fit, the gearbox is about 8cm longer, both engine and gearbox mounts would have to shift forward or the prop' shortened. It is all very tight and the gearbox definitely won't come out with the engine in place. So I will box it back together for now.

I have a 205 pinto, short sump, twin 40 dhla's,ss 4-1 manifold to go in as well so if I'm going to have alter loads (mountings ect) I may as well do it all at once. Need to find a sliding joint for a type 9 now, fun innit ::) ::)

I should be able to help. I can borrow the works one anytime. It folds down to a good size too.  8)
