'The Gaffer'

I went to Castle Coombe yesterday to get a sound check done on my car. Couldent get it lower than 102 db, the limit being 100 db. Strange as my car has been on most tracks in the past with no problem :o

Merlin Motorsport came to the rescue with an extention silencer and were very helpful in getting one to fit.

Finally got the right size and went back to the test area, not easy with probably one of the biggest Mini events in the whole country going on at the same time. The sound test guys were very helpful though and with one more test I managed 98 db at 8000rpm and 100 db at 8500. My ideal test rpm is 8250 so I should be fine to track anywhere now.

One of the Mini clubs kindly let me park on their stand.

My new silencer.

Now all I need are some new wheels and track tyres.

Bulldog Bri

Great news Phil. Now your ready for the track.  :D

Must go up to Merlin and see if they can do anything for mine.

'The Gaffer'

I'm sure they could take a look, but try to book a sound test first, Call the circuit and see if Andy or any of the sound test crew are around.

David H

thats the ticket, looks race!

Richard

Future builds won't have that problem with reg.s now at 99db.

Looks a mean grater !   ;D

now you get to do the track thing you wanted

PhilW

There is no stopping you now Phil :)

Thats what I thought until I went out in the car and heared a very nasty bang from what I think was the diff. The diff is worn out anyway and has been clanking and rumbling for some time but I thought it might last the summer. The diff still drives ok but I am worried that it might let go big time taking all my nice new drive shafts etc with it.

Reasearching a rebuild or replacement now. :'(

PhilW

I would get it rebuilt, that way you know the drive train is new.

Good advice. Anyone you would recommend Phil?

Its a Sierra LSD mate. Thanks.

PhilW

You could try a TVR specialist like Dulford automotive(cullompton), when i had the Cerbera IIRC it was £450 for a rebuild  :o

:o I'm looking for something a bit cheaper than that if poss.

PhilW

Bell Hill Garage @ Hinton Charterhouse They break TVRs so should have a few diffs about, ask for Tom he's a good bloke

dave_bence

For a Sierra viscous diff rebuild, try Phil Jones in Chipping Sodbury:

http://www.pjed.co.uk/index.htm

Lots of local racers use him.

Sometimes it seems you get what you pay for.

Phil,

Don't bother with track tyres. You don't need them, certainly not for your first trackday!

I've only just fitted trackday tyres after 8 years of trackdays - just out of curiousity.

Too late Rog :o.

I decided to get some new 15" Team Dynamic pro race 3's in anthricite so thought I may as well try some Toyo 888's at the same time.

Everybody has said my current 17" wheels with very low profile tyres would be crap on the track as they have no flex and it would be like trying to corner on stiff rubber bands. I can always go back to road tyres once the Toyos are knackered.
