This is something I'm thinking of doing but would like to know what your thoughts are on this. The plan would be to meet up somewhere North Bristol on Sunday 16th August & head out on a nice drive to the Achor Inn at Tintern for a club meal, after that you have the option of visiting the Abbey or going off somewhere else for a drive along those lovely roads they have over there.
If this a popular then I will try to reserve us our own parking at the pub as well as the tables. We can head out for the afternoon & have an early tea or head out around 11.30am & have a late lunch I don't mind which.
What do you think?
Please let me know?
All of your opinions are welcome good or bad as well as suggestions you think might improve on the day
So what do you think?
opps sorry guys it would have to be the Sunday after so the date for this would be Sunday 23rd August
I've never been to the Anchor. looks good on their website. I'm guessing the parking there is suitable for the cars? I've tended to shy away from the abbey area as it always seems packed out with tourists, coach parties etc. My personal favourite Wye Valley pub is the Boat Inn at Redbrook http://www.theboatpenallt.co.uk/ (http://www.theboatpenallt.co.uk/) although it almost certainly isn't big enough for a group of us unless its one of those trips where not many turn up! Also the parking arrangement isn't great as you park up on the English side of the river and then cross over the footbridge alongside the old railway bridge over the Wye to get to the pub on the Welsh side so you have your pint in a different country to where your car is parked!
As we now have some Chepstow members perhaps they can advise...
Agree that doing this the day before Combe may not be the best idea!
I am always up for that route - perhaps up via Tintern and back via the Malverns - roads don't come much better than that.
Ian
Further to Sanzomat's comments:
There is a big car park at Tintern next to the Abbey but get a few coaches in it at high season as it will be and it is full. There is no alternative to that. I like the look of the Boat. We shouldn't worry too much about the numbers - I am sure we can keep them down with a little effort!
Ian
This is only 6 days after the Combe track day outing Colin, are you sure you have allowed enough 'cone extraction' time?? :P
(I so know I am gonna regret saying that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
You just got to keep up on every lap & not go off then mate & you wont regret saying that mate. :)
Any more thoughts on this run out?

I always think if you are going to do a Sunday then may as well go pretty early and enjoy the traffic-free roads to the full. Generally there is little traffic around before about 8.30am. That way we could have lunch at a normal-ish time too?
I know early Sunday mornings are hard but I have always found them more than worth the effort.
Last Sunday I went out on my own at 6.45am and didnt really see another car until gone 8am!! The air is great that time of day too, certainly wakes you up! ;D
QuoteLast Sunday I went out on my own at 6.45am and didn't really see another car until gone 8am!!
You can't see anything when you pass the speed of light! :P :o :D
I am happy to go earlier if it is better for everyone?
Come on people please let me know what you think? :)
Colin We would be fine for this run out / lunch :P
Well as its 1.5 miles away from me I would jump at it...... But I'm am going to be abroad.
So I'm gutted, I would have given you all a guided tour of the tin tintern and its iron works and blast furnace..... A pet subject of mine plus the history of the area, so if you want to make it a later date...
But to give my four penny worth, the parking of cars is not a problem if mud morning. I'm sure the pub will make reservations just as they do for coaches, this pub has so much room, plus you can wander through the village, around the gift shops and craft stalls or over the old railway bridge, even along the shoreline up to the 2 other pubs. Plenty to do in tintern.
Redbrook is now pay and display on the redbrook side and almost no parking outside the boat, plus the lanes are extremely narrow and there is a lot of tractor traffic around August.
They aren't slow either!!
I would personally persuade you not to go to the boat as a group.
If you want any more info then just shout.
The date is not set in stone yet mate. Just waiting to see how much interest I will get for this one. :)
I concur with the Boat - it is necessary to park on the other side of the river and walk across the bridge.
I got carried away and planned a wonderful route last night making a circular tour arriving back at the Anchor for lunch and there are some spectacular roads in there! It takes in the Wye valley and the Forest of Dean. An ideal start point would be Morrisons car park at Cribbs Causeway.
Views, valleys, hills, forest, twisting roads rivers and streams, cottages and scenery and maybe some sun!

I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do much in August due to just getting back from being in Bahrain. That weekend and my family wanting to recover some time with me.
No worries Peter. Thanks for letting me know mate. :)
Not sure yet what we're doing those dates, but will let you know closer to the time ::)

ok 23rd it is then. ;D
This will be for the 23rd August & the landlord of the Anchor pub has said he will reserve us parking on his grounds. So who else is up for it? 8)

We will be meeting up somewhere in North Bristol I'm thinking around 11ish to do a lovely drive to Tintern abbey where the landlord will reserve us parking spaces for us to park & to have a meal there. The route has already been arranged by Ian which means you can guarantee it will be worth doing. 8)
This will be a weather dependant event which could get cancelled a day before but we will deal with that closer to the time.
So far on route we have = Moleman
Iancider +1
Facial Hair optional
Sumov8
Sanzomat
Almondsburyhills
Meeting us there we have = Damouk
Mr Tone
Any more for this?
Please can you also let me know if you are bringing a +1 so I can book enough seats for food.
Sorry buds ,not around for a few weeks now. ::)
Sounds lovely! About time we had another get together meal. I am working late afternoon till 10pm. So could only make it for the early lunch. ::)
Should have full details tomorrow. Ian is finalising the route details tonight & we will put them up tomorrow.
You will get a few options = 1 , Slightly earlier start for a little run along some nice roads.
= 2, Anyone who is on the route can join it where they please.
= 3, You can make your own way there as long as you get there by 12.30pm for a meal.
Choice is yours people 8)
Any more for this? ;D

OK option 1 route which Ian has spent some time doing for us.
Option 1 = Route via Chepstow, Devauden and up to Monmouth, into the the Forest of Dean via some excellent roads and then down the Wye valley road to Tintern. It is about a two hour tour so leaving Morrissons at the Mall at about 10:00. Total distance from the mall to Tintern via the tour is 67 miles. On the return leg people can make their way back via the 466 to Chepstow and over the bridge or follow me for an add-on via some very pretty roads to St Briavealls castle and then to the Old Ferry Inn under the old Severn bridge this add about 12 miles to the return journey. Morrisons post code is BS10 7UD and it sells the cheapest fuel in Bristol.
Option 2 = Anyone who is on the route can join it where they please.
Option = 3, You can make your own way there as long as you get there by 12.30pm for a meal.
Choice is yours people 8)
Any more for this? I will need to know pretty soon so please let me know which option you are doing & if your bringing a +1 for the meal booking ;D

Colin, put me down as the family will still be away. Don't know if the kit will make it as it was getting to hot just returning from the Riverside the other night but taking the radiator out tomorrow and getting a new core fitted (just one more thing to try) :'(
If the kit not fixed I will I will go incognito in the tintop :o :o
Colin
Option 1 Plus 1 Cheers and thanks for the time and effort again!
Will be on my lonesome. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Still waiting to hear about my plus 1.
Hi, I'd be up for it Colin if not too late.
Weather dependant as you say, s I have no roof :(
Plus 1 is now confirmed as a yes please Col. So that's me and Beyonce, er.... a mate coming. Angelina Jolie was apparently already spoken for by another BKCC member :(

This will be a weather dependant event so the date could get changed it the weather is bad.
Current BBC1 long term forecast is a bit iffy. Fingers crossed it improves this week. What we need is some more Combe weather!!
As I am currently car-less I will be navigating from Molemans passenger seat.
Ian
If the weather turns out to be sh :o te mate will this still go ahead or be cancelled? Someone mentioned to me that they may go up in an "Audi" (whatever that is!), can't recall who it was, some bloke inna skeleton car wivva busaru engine or sumfin? ;D ;D :P :P
This will be a dry weather event only so we may cancel it on Sunday morning if it looks dodgy.
So please check Sunday morning to check that it is still on. I will put a confirmation post up by 8.30am Sunday.
The weather ain't looking good so nobody leave until I post if it is on at 8.30 am tomorrow
Weather update at 17:19 in Bradley Stoke its just started to P*ss down, will check again in the morning, just pushed the car back into the garage after polishing it, so I guess its my fault
Yeah, had mine out too. Put it away now ;D
Was over in the valleys earlier today, the weather was great until about 5pm when it did a 'Shearwater' again! :o
Luckily we were back in the garage just in time. Some fab roads over there though isnt there. I may have to move house now!
This event will be postponed!
Weather forecast is heavy rain all day. I will reschedule it very soon.
This helped my decision this morning. :(

Very wet then Colin! Bloody rain. :(
It was lovely over there yesterday too.
I'm thinking to reschedule this one to Sunday 13th September instead of going to Queens Square since it clashes with Bristol Half Marathon?
What do you think people?
Sounds like a good plan to me
Yep why not!
Maybe we might get some actual sun, that yellow stuff that used to be in the sky before it got all full of wet stuff! Like we had in 1976!! :o
Ah yes, I remember it well :P
Looks good to me - not sure if I'll have a car but I will still aim to attend.
Ian
Sorry gents I will be in France that weekend, but I'm sure you will have sunny weekend
That is a shame Sumov8. But lucky you. :)
So far for 13th Sept then we have Moleman option 1
Iancider option 1
Facial hair optional option 1
Damouk option 3
The second Sunday at Queens Square is going to be postponed to 20th September instead now. I will put this up on a new thread.
Any more up for this run out? I will need names in advance to book the table & reserved parking. :)
Yes the 13th sounds fine, I'll be there not sure about the plus 1 yet.
Aha maybe it was my disappointment that I couldn't go that it rained.
But yippee I can go now, so count cam n I in.
If you want a really good drive around I could di a route, just depends on how long everyone wants it.
One of the better roads is the shire Newton road towards usk, through usk and out on the chain bridge road, then back towards raglan, off onto the monmouth road, then down the wye valley to tintern, I'll drive it and see how far it is.
You could also stop at the iron horse cafe just out of usk, a bikers/ modified car enthusiast cafe.
Yes there are some brilliant roads if they aren't too narrow, which there are a few you can get caught out on.
So far for 13th Sept then we have Moleman option 1
Iancider option 1
Facial hair optional option 1
Damouk option 3
Mikebishop option 1
Brandy Barrel option 2

There is a slim chance I might have a car by then,
If not I will be riding shotgun with Moleman.
Ian

I will need to know very soon to book the table & parking
This will get cancelled if the weather is bad. ::)
It would seem like my +1 will be coming along to this one too if it goes ahead.. second time out in the v-storm and it will be a 30 miler
At the mo it's looking like me and no plus one. But I have to say, so far the weather forecast isn't looking promising (again)
There is an easy solution to thus though, we get the government and the rest of the world to agree to move the weekends to another part of the working week when it never bloody rains!!! Or we all find jobs where we work Saturday and Sunday and have two week days off in lieu, cos it only ever rains on kit car blat weekends!
I will put a put up at 8am on the Sunday morning like last time to let you know if it is on or off.
Meeting point will be the same as before, 10am Morrisons car park at Cribbs. Lysander Rd, Bristol, South West BS10 7UD.
Just back from France and catching up on the last couple of days posts. I might come along for just the drive if the weather is fine but other commitments mean I'd have to zoom off without staying for the meal. I'll have to decide in the morning, not just the weather that might stop me...
I'm now 50/50 on this at the moment Colin. Andrew has been over and back 3 times and it's all done but I now have other stuff to do like clean and polish and get other cars ready for sale (you know what I am talking about!!) ;)
Oh yeah, and I have 3 perms and a blow dry booked in and they have to do be done by lunchtime and people are queueing around the block for your famous back, sack and crack!! You've started a craze mate!! ;D ;D ;D :P :P :P
No probs guys thanks for keeping me posted.

A little something red maybe? Just being observant that's all :o
Aargh things never go the way you want.
I got given tickets for one of the last flights of the Vulcan aircraft XH558 in Coventry on Sunday!!!! And as its a one off never to be repeated history being made thing.
Which obviously means I can't make tintern .......... Really fed up with that as I was really looking forward to it and hate letting people down, sorry guys.
I enjoy being out with BKCC and always have fun whether it's with one member or lots, everyone has such a great attitude and the camaraderie is brilliant.
The reception I received last club night after turning up horrendously late and 4 people remained was just brilliant, I never took the opportunity to say thanks for the laughs, short but sweet.thanks guys.
Aha, now I know who you are Brandy Barrel! I was one of the 4 musketeers who stayed! All for one and one for all, ha ha! You're right, this club is great, one of the best things I've done in years was to join and I tell everyone I know or meet about it.
That Thursday night was one of the best laughs I've had in ages, it's rare these days to laugh til your tummy hurts, but that one was one of those times! You caught the tail end of it all, now apparently I'm a hairdresser and Colin likes to have a back, sack and crack job once in a while!! :o :o :o :o :P :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D
In fairness you cannot miss out on seeing the Vulcan mate, I'm envious! Have fun and soak up the experience 8)

Well Bri was being observant and thought he saw me in the Tiger in Marksbury the other day, but he was wrong!! I still wonder who that was? Atm it's looking like I will not make Tintern mate, are you coming to Queens Sq on the 20th, weather permitting? It's getting to that time of year when opportunities to drive in the dry are, well, drying up! Fingers crossed for Tintern and the 20th as after that who knows what the weather will bring. See you there if not before ;)

OK so far I'm going, damouk is meeting us there, Sanzomat may come for the drive.
Can Mike Bishop let me know by tonight if he is going & can Ian let me know if his car is up & running please. :)
As I may have to put this off now due to lack of numbers.
Sorry guys, I can't even make the drive now. Have fun.
Me & Ian are definitely going now. 8)
So unless it is raining we will be at the meeting point just before 10am & all are welcome to join us.

I hope the weather holds out for you guys. Wish I could come but various events have conspired to prevent me :(
Have a great trip :D :D
Don't worry FHO - were are going to make it really loud so that you hear us and then you wont fee left out.
