Title: Another Car!
Post by: Bulldog Bri on 03, August, 2010, 06:23:18 PM
I've just got back home after spending a long weekend up in York with my friend Steve (Member, Merlin) and yep, he's just bought me another car to work on.

This time it's already registered and just needs a good tidy up to get it back on the road.

It's an RMB Gentry. A MG TF Replica in red using Triumph running gear. Which car I'm not sure yet, but it's from 1963,  :o is all we know at the mo'.

Anyone got any 'old' Triumph Haynes Manuals laying about no longer needed ;D

Couple of pic's from the auction.

Hopefully it will be a fairly quick turn around with it one  ;)

Bri, if you've got that much spare time, do you fancy doing my job for a while (travel to hot and exotic places :) ) so I can get on with my one and only build  :-[  ;)

I wish I did have more spare time John :) and some more space. (more cars) I'll be having my own meetings soon  ???

Have narrowed it down to a 1300 Triumph Herald Based car as well now.

My friend lives in Haxby just north of York. We've been into town a few times so this weekend spent a day up in Filey.

Got the car home today and there's lots to do.  ???

Most of the fibreglass wings need attention, from crazing to a rip that has been poorly repaired.

Floors need completly replacing. As does the dashboard and some internal panels.

The chassis is solid but does need wire brushing and painting.

Haven't dared try turning the engine over.

Seats are in very good condition, (no rips or tears)

Yey.....

Went out and had a play with the engine this afternoon, and fitted in a very simple starter loom. The engine turned over very smoothly so with that I added in the ignition and got a spark at the plugs, with that I put some fuel in a small bottle and inserted a pipe in the bottle up to the fuel pump and tried again. Watching the fuel feed pipe to the carb I could see fuel going through then with a little choke the engine started. Big puff of blue smoke to start with but seeing that the engine hasn't been started for 13 years! I can't complain and that soon cleared.  ;D

What a result, maybe this will be ok to do up.  :D

One very happy builder now this evening

Post by: Bulldog Bri on 25, August, 2010, 11:17:42 AM
I had a little play with the car over the weekend and tried a battery on the engine... It turned over very easily and sounded very smooth. So I then carried on and wired in a coiland got a spark at the plugs after ajusting the points gap.

So what else could I do but send some fuel up to the carb and see what would happen, well the engine didn't evn think twice once the fuel hit the carb, she burst into life and ran and reved sweet as anything  :o not bad since it's been unused for 13 years  ;D very happy.

Just a little carpentry project and a good scrub and spary make the intirior look good and MOT it! Easy  :P

Hi Brian

I have just sold a similar car on eBay and am about to sell off parts from 2 others. All herald based. One was a Gentry.

So if you need any bits let me know so I don't list them.
You are welcome to have a rumage through the pile.

I may have a manual and will look in the workshop tommorrow.

In my youff I had two Heralds so know a bit about them any queries - just ask.

Made the most of the last 2 weekends good weather, stripped down both sides of the car and painted the exposed chassis and framework. All are in very good condition still. I've also made up some cardboard patterns for the new plywood panels for the floor and sides.

I've now got a pile of bits that do need wire brushing so a day in the garage will see those bits ready to go back on. (brackets, foot pedals)

Have got a huge engine crane on it's way as well just got to find a way of getting it over to my garage. (it's huge  :o)

This weekend sees the Gentry back on her wheels after and cleaning the rear suspension. All that needed replacing was one of the wheel cylinders and a new set of brake shoes.
This week I'm hoping to start on the wiring for the ignition and get hold of a new clutch master cylinder and an alterntor to replace the Dynomo.
Will get some pics up in the week.

Think I've just about got the car ready for MoTing now, I did take the car for a quite test drive in the week after work down to the local common. I had a mate from work follow behind in case of breakdown but wasn't needed. The car drove really well just gave out a little smoke, I've put some of the Wynns oil treatment in to help but think thats gonna need a little more running around before having full effect (fingers crossed).

Pics taken at night with just headlights on the car

Well. The car has had an MoT. Failed on a fair bit. Lol. I've sorted most of the problems now, electrics, welding etc... I've also had on the way back, very bad running, missing on a couple of cyl's :( So took the head off found 1 valve seat badly burnt and some of the others on their way. reground them all and with a new head gasket put it all back together. I know I've got spark and fuel. The engine turns over but won't fire just the ocational cough. I've tried to test the compression but my tester is old and may not reading any more as I can't belive it's gone from running to no compression that quick. Has anyone got a compression tester that they could bring over  (kingswood area) or lend before I rip the head off again. PLEASE  ::)

Hopefully someone will have a compression tester you can borrow.

Hi Bri,

just spotted you text on the phone

think your engine is 1-3-4-2, make sure you dont have the middle ones ass about tit, or you will have 1-2-4-3 and it wont like that

take off rocker cover,  recheck the tappets, dont forget only adjust inlet when the opposite inlet is down  like wise for the exhaust ones, this is important

I do have a tester here but trying my hardest to put my engine back in at the moment so a bit stuck at the mo, but if you want to come and grab it feel free

Pete

Thanks to Pete for coming over and working through things on the engine with me. I've now taken the head back off and going to reseat the valves through again. I've also taken the pistons out and have a new set of rings on order. Will get hold of some Wellseal to help seal the head down next time. MoT is booked for Tuesday morning. Fingers crossed.  ::)

In the words of Victor Meldrew. " I DON'T BELIVE IT!!!"

I have now completely stripped and rebuilt the engine.... Pistons out. cleaned and new rings. the head off and the valves rechecked and a little more regrinding. new 'o' rings int the carb to stop the leaks. New head gasket checked and fitted with Wellseal to help seal it down.

Turned the engine over and got water shoting out of cylinder 4 to start with then spitting out of all plug holes. Though on the plus side did have some compression to start with but back down to 50psi on all cylinders.......

Think I'll be looking for a new engine soon at this rate.  >:(

Title: Re: Another Car!
Post by: Bulldog Bri on 28, February, 2012, 10:36:55 AM
Update. What's been done.

Engine was running on only 2 cyl's, so took head off to do a decoke and see if there was any other problems. 1 valve had almost burnt through its seat and a couple others were starting. Ground them back in, they are all good now.

Rebuilt the engine with new head gasket, found I was getting a lot of water in No4 cylinder and no compression.
So took the head off again checked for anything that could be stopping the gasket sealing, nothing. So put it all back together, same thing,

Removed it and rebuilt it again, this time a little compression and no water. Did a wet test with oil down the bores, that lifted the compression very slightly. (10psi at most) and water again. I've still fitted new rings as well at this point while the engine was in bits.

Removed the head again and refitted using Wellseal to try and get a good seal to the Head. No difference. So one last idea, I put the old head gasket back in (with Wellseal again) and Compression now between 135-150psi on all cylinders.

From there I refitted all the ancillaries and tried to start the engine.

I have...
1. Fuel. Pump was stripped and cleaned, lots of sludge blocking inner filter. Carb I took apart as well 50 years of muck in that to. Fitted new o rings to the brass adjuster underneath as it did leak a little
2. Compression. New rings and valves re-seated. Tested with 2 different testers
3. Spark, even ran direct wire from battery to coil
4. Timing chain wasn't touched, and ran ok before and checked since.
5. Set the carb to leanest setting and increased in small bits
6. Engine also ran for about a min but then would not restart (on Sunday), and started again yesterday but quickly died. Managed to start again this morning only for a brief time (few secs) but in that time the down pipe from the manifold I could see was glowing red !!! :o wondering if exhust pipe could be blocked. Could this be a cause?

Big Thanks to Pete again for coming over and working with me on it.  :-* and Steve for the loan of the Ring compressor.

Now got mobile mechanic coming in this afternoon, MOT has been put back a day.  ???

Kick me if I'm wrong Bri, but isn't glowing exhaust a sign of mucho weak mixture i.e. 'hot & lean' ?

Glowing exhaust  - now thats pointing weak mixture, or ign timing to far advanced or a mixture of both, I dont think its the timing as when I set the dissy I thought it was fairly close   - when it ran on Sunday it sounded pretty good and on all 4 cyl's -

have you still got good compression

still recon its fuel  -  make sure no leaks on inlet manifold   - try for another carb from somewhere prob best idea

Have you thought about old/stale fuel?. I have had the same symptoms on generators and lawn mowers that have sat around for a while

ie. poor starting, running rough and glowing red hot exhaust.

Just a thought, a quick easy fix if it is ???

Thanks for the thought Ed, but I've been through a few jerry cans worth of fuel while working on the car plus I also put in yhe lead replacement additive.

No call by lunchtime, so stopped of on my way to work, to be told the tester wasn't in now today.  ???

So I've got to wait another day.  :'(

Hi Brian

I've been following your thread and you have been doing everything obvious.
However your comments on the glowing exhaust reminded me of a couple of cars I had problems with.

Many years ago I was servicing a Lotus and replaced the plugs with the correct ones BUT previously the HT leads had been changed for the wrong resistor type  and the combination gave all the symptoms of weak mixture that was incurable until I changed the plugs back to a non resister type.

Also one of my own cars developed a 'fuel starvation' problem. Slowing on gradients, ect ect. After changing pump, fuel lines, flushing tank, stripping the carb 5 times etc. I cured this by using plugs of a different heat range.

Check your plugs and HT leads are the old fashioned non resistor type.

Hi Dave

Now that is very interesting, I have fitted new style plugs, the triple tip type (Accuspark I think) When I get the car back I'll change them for the ones I've got in the Locost, see if that makes a difference.

what has the mobile mech touched or altered to get it to start again ?

thought those were the original plugs from before you stripped it, if they arn't put the old ones back in - there are to many things being altered at once to denote where the problem was in the beginning and why the problems now

are you still getting good compresion ?

I agree with Pete. Best thing to do is try and get back to the original setup and change one thing at a time. Always makes it so much more difficult if you do several things at once.

Well got the car down to the garage for it MoT on Wednesday and the tester was off sick  ??? same again on Thursday  :o He was in Friday so had a word with him, he said not testing that in that condition  >:( I asked why he said it won't start, so I played for only a couple of mins and got it going even though it did run the night before I took it down. Once he heard it goign he came over and had a look noticed that 2 plug leads were around the wrong way  :-[ could have sworn when I left it they weren't, so switched them back and it ran even better with no smoke even with a good rev' so he then said he'd test it. Saturday morning popped in and its in the garage workshop but not been looked at then. so now will have to wait till Monday.  >:( :'(

Once it's back, will be making it pretty and getting a new hood made, then get it gone.

Finally...........

(http://s18.postimage.org/3ozdybss5/20120301_131734.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/3ozdybss5/)

The news is good, it only failed on a lower trunion worn and a slighty freyed seat belt. So quick stop off at Moss and the new bits dropped off yesterday eve.... Hopefully done this morning. If it behaves for me I may be bringing it down to Queens Sq (Still unpainted  ::) ) but a chance for a run  :P

Then all I have to do is make it look pretty and a new roof (getting quote today) and thats one done.  ;D

To be honest... not entirely sure. Just seems to have slowly cleared up and runs a lot better could still do with a good tuning but it does run!

Flippin great, I knew that the fuel tank weeped. But I did have aready some sealant I had left over from the Locost build. So I made up some paste to smear over the area where it was seep was and as I did so I opened up a bigger hole and fuel started to run out in a steady steam.  :'(  I had to leave the plastic jerry can under until it stopped, saved over half a can of fuel  :)
I've now got to wait till it dries off wipe over and try again.
(http://s10.postimage.org/qlyoq2mkl/20121013_114654.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/qlyoq2mkl/)

In the meantime I did some work on the exhaust, had to reseal the manifold joint as that was blowing a bit. The jobs for this afternoon is to try and seal the fuel tank and also try and get the engine running a bit better.  ::)

And I'm very reluctant to take the bloody head off AGAIN!!! after all I've done (and others) to try and get the thing running.  :'(

Anyone know of a Triumph engine for sale cheap. Herald/Spitfire 1300/1500 prefered with carbs as not wild about the one that I have.  ???

Spoke with my Guru Pete this morning straight away he said 'Head Gasket'. We had problems earlier in the year with that, tried a new one but ended up putting the old one back in as couldn't get any compresion with the new one (see earlier in this thread). Well got home took the plugs out and turned the engine over and sure enough had water coming out of No4 Cylinder again!  >:( :'( So head coming off AGAIN! and I'll have to get another. followed by full oil change and new filter  :'(  >:(  ???

I would not add any addictives into an engine as a cure just a get you home option, if water is finding its way into the bores there is a big failure some where and
Gum Gum is not the long term answer.

Has the head been skimmed recently?

Yep its cleaning up very nicely. Used some degreasant that Pete gave me and it works a treat.  ;D

(http://s17.postimage.org/hinz2sy3v/20121021_175557.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/hinz2sy3v/)

One problem that has arisen is that the flywheel on the 1500 block uses slightly larger bolts to hold it on to the end of the crankshaft... Do you recon that it would be ok to drill out the bolt holes in the flywheel to take the larger bolts? as it fits everywhere else and the flywheel for a 1500 can't be any larger due to it wouldn't fit in the bellhousing.  ::)

Big thanks again to Paul for the engiine, all it needs now is to go through the head and a nice coat of paint, then fingers crossed it'll go in without to many problems and works first time.  :P

Double valve springs don't seem to be standard acording to the manual!  :D And I was tempted to keep them for my Bulldog but I'll leave them this time, hehe.  ;D

Drilled the flywheel out to take the larger bolts today and put the head back together. Just need to get another new head gasket, 2 more flywheel bolts and an oil filter and it's good to go back in.

Blimey looks at least £200 quids worth. ;D only kidding hope it runs as good as it looks.  I have a fuel pump if you need one and I found the head cover as well but it need a clean and lick of paint.  Are you planning on upgrading anything whilst it's apart or keeping it standard I was looking at bits on www.jagspares.co.uk (http://www.jagspares.co.uk) whio seem very reasonable and www.canleyclassics.com (http://www.canleyclassics.com) got me the bits I ordered in 2 days.  I was reading up and lots of people say that an oil feeder pipe is a good idea, at £30 I'd say it can only be a good thing but fitting an oil cooler is a waste of time.

After a day of putting the last bits on and trying to start the engine with no luck  :'( (even with jump leads) it just wouldn't quite fire up. I left the battery on charge all night. This morning after a couple of tries it worked, the engine fired up and kept going  :P Drove it in and out of the garage and then up the back lane.

while the engine cooled, I sorted out a short circuit thats made itself known  :-[ refitted the bonnet then topped up the cooling system and put some more oil in.... Fingers crossed, IT'S DONE!

DELIVERED !
(http://s14.postimage.org/sab0rnwel/20121109_103015.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/sab0rnwel/)
When I got up there, I fitted a new fuel filter we put some fuel in started it up then he took it for a 6 mile round trip taking in the York ring road (got it up to 55mph) I followed behind in case of problems  ::) sure enough as there was only a jerry cans worth of fuel in the tank and its not the cleanest he stired up what was in there and conked out half mile from home. I dragged him back  but the car refused to restart the fuel in the filter looked more like muddy water so I don't think thats gonna help but its his car now.I've suggested he dilutes it with more fuel as its impossible to drain and keep running it, when its running clearer he can then change the filter.

But in all, He loves it.  :P

Are you going to re-cut the vavles into place? I guess you know its worth making up a cardboard template to pop the old valves etc in and mark the template. That way the same valve goes back into the same hole. Also worth giving the ports a little clean up and polish..

First you compress the springs with the compressor take out the 2 collets then the spring cap will come off, followed by the spring. After that the valve should drop out from underneth.Once you set them out as they came out as in the pic work through each set first by grinding the valve back in the head to give a good seall all the way around the valve seat. Once you have that refit the spring, compress with the cap in place, drop in the 2 collets carefully and release the pressuremake sure all the surfaces are clean before refitting the head. That should do for a basic service. I use a wire brush in a drill to clean up as much as poss' as well.

Paste can be bought at most accssories shops. As for the head bolts have you taken off the rocker pedistals? because that should be the only thing getting in the way 3 (I think) of the head bolts. Tourqe settings for the head bolts is 45lbs rocker pedistals 25lbs.
