Title: Best kit car insurance comparisons / reviews / recommendations
Post by: 'The Gaffer' on 08, October, 2009, 11:13:29 AM
I thought it would be a good idea to put your real world experiences of kit car insurance into a sticky thread to maybe help others find the best deal or service.

I personally use Frank Pickles insurance.

Who do you use?

I've just changed to Adrian Flux from Footman James.

I've always had good service from FJ, but the price has gradually been creeping up.

This year, FJ wanted £197.33. Identical cover from AF was £133.40. Quite a difference!

That is a surprisingly big difference on that amount, time for a ring around coming up.

Same as Dave Bence I changed a year ago from Footman James and am with Adrian Flux £152 incl. 3K miles, full breakdown and European cover.  There are some advantages to getting older and being a kit car driver!!   :D

Looks like Sureterm Direct came through for me this time too.

I will miss the personal touch of MSM though but the wallet comes first.

I used Sureterm Direct, found it in the K/car magazine. They quoted me £60.00 cheaper for my motor bike, thats due soon! If I go ahead     with the purchase of the Robin Hood, they gave me a quote on that as well-seems alright for me.

Having been lied to about the cover they offered when taking out a policy with Adrian Flux I absolutely would not recommend them. We ended up having a long argument and was patronised about how what I was saying couldn't possibly be right and obviously I was making things up. After suggesting they listened to the recording of the sales conversation they apologised and offered a full refund so they realised they were wrong but who knows what they would be like if you had to make a claim.

I'm currently dealing with 2Gether Insurance. They're a small outfit so you can speak to the same person every time if you want to but I am struggling to get the right paperwork sorted. We're nearly there though and at least they're trying hard and are keen to impress. I suspect I'm one of the few people who actually reads their policy terms and conditions so perhaps they don't get many people coming back to them to get items corrected.

I'll update this once I've got it sorted if anyone is interested.

Well this is what I wrote about Flux on Pistonheads a month or two ago. It gives a little more detail about my problem with them.

QuoteWell Flux lied to me about agreed values when I took out a policy a little while ago so I wouldn't hold your breath. After supplying everything they asked for and receiving all the policy douments they sent me a further letter saying "We're pleased to tell you we've agreed your policy at £xxk", which was about 2/3 of what we had actually agreed.

When I gave them a call to ask what they were playing at I was patronised for thinking that they would possibly agree a value above the market rate. Explaining that surely that is the point of agreed value policies made no difference. In the end I got them to listen to sales phone call and, surprise surprise, they called might straight back and offered me a full refund.

The bottom line is I wouldn't trust them to have done what they said they will until all paperwork has been received and you have double checked it.

I'll update the 2Gether Insurance story once it's settled. I am fairly confident they'll be ok though going by the impression I got from them on the phone.

Just had my insurance renewal for the Hood come through from Footman James,  £223 for 3000 mls. cover..... bit high I thought so I shopped around.

Adrian Flux wanted £187 ......  Sureterm Direct wanted £130 with £50 excess and track day insurance.........bargain or what! :P :P

Not sure yet.....haven't got the paper work through yet just paid over the phone.

It also included a replacement car and "agreed" insurance if I have receipts for improvements from the original purchase price ie.....as I have resprayed it and will have redone the interior and dash I can add this to the valuation.

Flux, FJ and Sureturn were all around 200 pounds for my Westy.  Went with Frank Pickles this year for 118.  Thankfully I haven't ever had to claim.  That's when you know how good an insurance company they are.
Title: Re: Kit car insurance. Who do you recommend?

I agree.   Your paying for a piece of paper until you claim......thats when you know if it was good value or not.

I noticed thar Roadsure was was underwritten by Highway Insurance, which is the same as my van insurance.   I had a claim earlier this year with no hassle......hope  a car claim would be as smooth.

What I can't figure out is where they would get replacement parts from.....hardly off the shelf for body panels and if you have side damage in most cases that would write the car off surely!

Which is why its best to get an agreed value from the offset so if the car is written off you get the agreed value back in cash to enable you to by a like for like replacement car again.

I have just emailed A-Plan for a quote.

My renewal off Adrian Flux has shot up in price following this first year to £184...

They also told me that you can only have one no claims bonus as well.  The one for your main vehicle.

Is that correct that you cant build a no claims on another vehicle..?

Surely its your good driving they should go on, not the vehicle...

There is also a £30 Policy issue fee included in this.   What the **** is that

Talk about having your cake and eating it...... :P   Typical Insurance companies.

"Well"......I have just asked a couple of Insurance companies about the No Claims Bonus.
As to why I wasnt given it on my kit car after 50 years with no accidents or claims.

The answer was that some comanies do give a discount with a value up to the full amount of NCB,  but it is not a NCB......while others do not even think of it.

So it pays to look around and ask a few questions first.    After all you are the customer and they want your business.

Take my example this time around.

Last year I insured with Adrian Flux who gave me what I thought to be a reasonable quote ot £135        Saying that, last week the renewal came through......   This was including a £30 policy issue fee...... plus a £15 personal accident cover...

What the policy issue fee is I will never understand, or why they have stated another £15 personal accident cover.... >:(

However this has hiked the final amount up to £183.81p.... :o

So I phoned around.... I phoned Frank Pickles after filling the questionare on line just to make sure they got it right.     I thought maybe they had slipped up, or miss typed or something, and what a surprise it was.    Their quote for my JBA Falcon Sports 2.0 with £100 excess and 2,000 miles was............£86.32p  Now is that brilliant or what.....yes  £86.32  I still cant belive it   £97 cheaper than Adrian Flux...:o

This is the cheapest quote I have had for many years on any vehicle..... 8)

I am now waiting for A-Plan to call me back......I have told them I have a very good quote so they need to do there work if they want my money.

Will keep you updated when it comes through.
=============================================

A-Plan called me back.   K.G.M...With £100 excess.....2,000 miles..........No Thanks at.......... £176.36p......They would not contemplate any no claims bonus..Plus they want photos so they can value it......

None of that from Frank Pickles, they took my valuation and allowed me discount for my No claims Bonus

So this time round its Frank Pickles for me.... £86.32p8)

                             One happy  Denzle...... ;D
=======================================================
I have just found out about Frank Pickles (Parts Only Insurance)   This gives an additional 30% off.   If you prang your motor and repair it yourself  they supply, or pay for the parts.
Another way to get your insurance cheaper because they have no labour to pay out.   And that is the expensive part for them......Cant be bad.... 8)
=======================================================

And to top it off....All the three quotes above were with the same insurance company......KGM.... ;)

So whos on the fiddle then... Frank Pickles gave me full No claims Bonus....but the other two didnt....So who is making the money and telling fibs.   Has to be A-Plan  &  Adrian Flux.

I will leave the rest up to you....       Denzle....... :-*

I have just recieved a call from Adrian Flux asking why I had cancelled with them.

I told them of the quote I had, and after hanging on the phone they came back to say they would cover me for £83.00.   :o

This made me angry as to why they didnt quote me this last year, and also why they wouldnt give me any no claims bonus.   They now agree they will after telling me they dont do this.. :-\  Two faced or what.

After my run through of playing with insurance brokers over the last couple of days.   I have to arranged for Frank Pickles to contact Phill to arrange a club discount for our members.....

After being under Adrian Flux for the last year and their stupid renewal price I contacted Frank pickles, who not only allowed me a no claims discount on my kit car,but also gave me insurance cover for £100 less than A.F.      :o    ;D

I have already posted information about this on the forum in the last couple of days, but now that we will be able to get quotes better than ever before, cant be a bad thing.

Ok Denz, it looks like you got a good deal for you and your car, thats great :) , but it dosent always follow that everyone else will get such a great deal from the same company.

Out of curiousness I called Frank Pickles and they couldent beat my recent quote from A-Plan including full UK and european breakdown cover. It was very close but not close enough. That said I'm sure others could get a great deal. Bottom line.. shop around.

I will however be talking to Frank Pickles again re a banner ad on our site and member discounts but at this stage cannot commit to one company exclusivity which is why I have moved Denzle's Frank Pickles post above here in the general insurance section.

Sorry Denz ;)

Everybody please feel free to add their insurance experiences here, good or bad.

Thats ok Phil. No need to say sorry, its the way things go.  ;)

I am surprised that Foggy and myself got ours down more than £100+ and not yours.
There again it all depends on the car..the engine...the owners records...etc etc etc that determines the resulting amount that a person pays, and yes like I said it pays to shop around... ;D

Sometimes a few track days are included in the premium, more often than not though you will be referred to a specialist trackday insurer if you intend to insure on a daily basis.

Received all my insurance stuff from Frank Pickles,I did speak to them over the phone,to clarify what was meant by mend it yourself. In my case,it meant,if the car came to any grief,an assessor will assess any damage, they would supply all parts needed for the repair, but it would be me repairing it.If the damage was too serious, they would probably write it off.We have agreed valuation. I don't  intend to take it on the track,so type of insurance suits me. job done

The renewal for the Firefox came this morning from Adrian Flux:

Fully comp, max 3000 miles a year would be £152.98 with AF.

I thought that wasn't too bad, but rang Chris at A Plan for a quote, same cover was £99.48.

Result ;D

Just had a letter though from Sureterm saying they could not insure me this year!! :o :o.........no,   i've not become an uninsurable risk even if i did manage to do a 180 in the wet the other day and ended up on the grass verge looking embarrassed. :-[       It appears they have dropped kit-cars from their insurance groups......I here they are in a bit of financial trouble.....but don't quote me!

I ended up phoning Frank Pickles and guess what......he quoted me the grand total of £101 for the old Hood for me and the wife fully comp., with agreed valuation!    Unbelievable price.....£30 cheaper than last year!   (though Dixie says it's because i'm so old!!!!) :D

It's strange isn't it, I have been insured with Norton/Herritage for 3 years but this year they won't insure the Shelsley unless I fitted a cat1 alarm/imobiliser and tracker, garaged it. Footman James wanted a rolling road readout every year to prove (or morelikely disprove) the engine tuning/power, Frank Pickles sorted me out though :)

I went thru Pickles this year.. Whilst on the phone he said the discount was appllied for being a member.. I have found tho that ALL insurance quotes are much higher than I expected.. Gone are the days where we can get full cover for under £150 a year....
Pickles do offer a good breakdown cover, onlt covers the kit car and not your daily use car which is a bummer.. Still cant have every thing now can we!!! ;D

I was with Sureterm and their prices went up so changed to the cheaper Frank Pickle who insured me using the same insurance company as I was with through Sureterm (Highway). I wonder for how long Frank Pickles will keep their price down.

Any car insurance needs to be checked before renewal every year. I insured with More Than for several years and allowed them to renew every year without checking. When I did check I found they were charging ' more than' double the best quote.

FWIW I am with Adrian Flux, always have been, very similar cost to Colin around £140 fully comp.  They always try it on at renewal, so a quick call to Frank Pickles for quote and hey presto they price match, a bit annoying but I guess they play the game.  £250 sounds way over the top.  Good luck!

I reckon BEC plus the 'Q' Plate could be the reason for the £295+.. Ok the BEC may be quicker off the line but the CEC have a greater top speed. As for the Q?? Well I pass on that one.. I live is a low risk area so that cant be the reason..
I was paying less for my Fiat Coupe 20VT, all mods declaired and running 291BHP  :-\ And the coop could carry 5 adults where as the BEC is just 1+1  :D

Hi all,

I had a problem this year - no IVA appointment in sight but car long finished.  Just about all of the insurers would not touch it until I got a date but VOSA doesn't seem to work very well any more!  I got success with Central Bespoke and they will do discounts for BKCC.  They were not the cheapest but the most flexible when it comes to unusual situations. I am now insured for 5000 miles but going nowhere!  :(
Title: Re: Kit car insurance recommendations / reviews

Insurance renewal time and I can now dump 2gether, yeehah!

Got a quote from FP at £108, comp,3K miles,£50 excess. Not too shabby I thought.

Interestingly they do a parts only deal. Any labour I do myself and they pay for the parts. This brings it down to £94.

I think they realize that I would rather do the work myself rather than let some filler factory loose on it.

Has anyone else tried this type of cover? :)

Nice bloke there (Henry), got a Westfield himself and we end up nattering for over 30 min.

They also do kit car breakdown and recovery including home start for £39.  No quibble about sleeping policemen on private land like I had

Please take time to have a look around our new insurance sponsors website by clicking on the banner ad at the top of the page. AIB (Airsports Insurance Bureau) may not be one of the typical company's that people think about when looking to insure their cars but AIB are very specialist, totally independent and can offer cover sometimes not offered by others.

Try them next time you want a car quote, or even a paragliding, skydiving, flying, or sailing quote.

I'm sure they will be along soon to introduce themselves on the forum.

Dont forget to mention you are a BKCC member for your insurance discount.

My renewal from FP was £140 this year.

With the help of Darren at AIB, I've just got this down to £89 including legal cover and commuting!  8)

Thats a great deal Rob. I suggest anyone with an up and coming kitcar insurance renewal should talk to AIB, just click the banner at the top of the page :)

Ratbag's insurance renewal is approaching so I thought I would give AIB a go. Clicked their link and filled out the form as requested and off it went. So far, 3 days later, haven't heard from them. :(

Thats strange, give them a quick ring and ask for Darren. It may have been an email glitch :(

I've insured with A-Plan, £119 for the Hood with Agreed Amount insurance....... same amount for the last 3 years!

I took out there breakdown policy too for £39 after the AA charged me £130 to take me home after hitting my sump in
at Durham Park.....they specialise on our sort of cars knowing they are very low. ;) ;)

I have just had the renewal details from Adrian Flux. All looked pretty much the same as last year price wise but the mileage allowance is 1500 miles!

That means if I use it every day for a year, I can do 4.1 miles each day. At a constant 30 mph, about 8 minutes driving. :o OR I could use it all at once and drive non stop for 48 hours (1 week-end) :-\

Comprehensive cover but  an £80 excess on windscreen cover, the policy does NOT use or accrue any no claims bonus.

Now does this sound like good value to anyone?

Still nothing from AIB.

Paintman and anyone else in the club(you know what I mean!!) if you get stuck again then ring around the other members for help. I don't mind coming out to help or give a tow.

Sound good apart from the £80 windscreen cover! ??? A new screen is around £20 from Roman Glass, Just get a template made up of the shape you need and take it to them. It won't be a posh heated screen but it will be laminated glass. That's what I did when Anna's screen got cracked with a bonnet flip. (my fault :-[)  :P

Re- windscreen, that was my thought exactly.

Regarding the mileage restriction, what are the restrictions with other members insurance policies? Seems like paying insurance to not drive the car and leave it locked up!

I've found 3000 miles/year is more than enough.  I could probably get away with 1500 if I really tried.  I only use the car for fun and use the tintop for everyday use.  If it's your only motor then you probably need unlimited (which is typically not that much more).

... the policy does NOT use or accrue any no claims bonus.

This is usual.  Normally only available if you have an everyday motor too.

I found 1500 miles not enough and 3000mls just about ok......but I keep it on the road for 12 months and it varies with the weather.

Year before last was rubbish weather with me doing only 2000mls but this year if the engine hadn't gone bust I would have
exceeded my 3000mls limit. ::)

Have used Footman James for three years, although the price was near £1000 because Brendon was only 18 when we first insured. I think they made an error giving the policy to us as usually you have to be 25+ They had to re listen to the phone conversation between me and the sales rep, and honoured the policy as it was their error. I have let the policy run so as to be able to keep Brendon insured, as I have always found it hard to get a policy to cover an under 25 year old. This year I had another search after being rejected by quite a few companies I have insured with Crosby Insurance Brokers who were very helpful, although still just under £600. not bad for 250bhp in 600kg in the grand scheme of things though. he's gradually getting older just hope I don't run out of money before it gets to a sensible price!!!!!  This is fully comp 4000 miles £100 excess.

I need at least 4000 miles on mine. I use my westy more than my van. I use competition car insurance as I add track day insurance on mine. The funny thing is that they don't count the miles you put on while on the track so it don't matter too much if your over because you say that was what you did on the track for the year.

It's about 10 days since I asked AIB for a quote, using the banner on this forum and still nothing.
Phoned yesterday and explained the situation and they promised to call back, still waiting. :(

I have just phoned Frank Pickles for a quote on 'Ratbag' and the Transit I have just got.

1. They can't insure the Transit untill I have finished the conversion and registered it as a
motorhome with the DVLA.

2. They can't insure the locost untill I have a daily usage car on the road and insured. >:( >:(

A big thanks to Darren at AIB insurance. He really took time to get me the best quote possible on my Alpina Z4 with modifications.

If your kit car, everyday car, van or bike insurance is up for renewal give Darren a ring on 02380 268 351 and let him help you get the best quote too.

My van insurance came up for renewal so I gave Darren a call at AIB. Gave me the best quote so I went with them. Proves they offer great value on other sorts of vehicle too.

Don't talk to me about Insurance Companies!!! >:(

I had my accident in the Hood over 5 weeks ago and they still haven't sorted it out yet!!!

I must have emailed and phoned them 20 times, sent photo after photo, bin checked out by the DVLA on the phone,
vin number sent to them(?) and even had to put the old no plate on the nose-cone and take another bl**dy picture

And guess what they're doing tomorrow..............................sending out their  INSURANCE ASSESSOR!!!!!!  :o :o>:( >:(

He did a great job for me as well. My van, being duel fuel, needed to be UKLPG registered. He guided me through that. Also gave me a good deal on price. I'll be asking for a quote for Ratbag when renewal comes around

I use Darren at AIB too, can't fault them so far I have to say and in the 2nd year they do your insurance pro rata which means as I am only keeping the Tiger a little while longer it was viable to re-insure it for the 2nd year as when I sell it I will get  a refund on the unused months. They are cheap too!

Fully comp on the Westfield with AIB was less that £90 this year!  8)

A quote on a 6.0 Ultima GTR was a little more however.  ::)

Want to go half's on a Ultima GTR Rob? But to be honest I think we will need Ed & Ian to go half's as well.  :D
