For trackday nuts & people that would like to try their first one.
Motorsport events are happy to have a club event at Abingdon airfield.
I'm told it is a fast but really wide & plenty of wide flat open fields so really safe for a first time trackday & plenty of quick straights nice corners for the regulars.
It comes recomended by some of our regular track nuts & motorsport events are a good friendly bunch that run a good day.
Details = It will cost £129. plus £20 if you want a extra driver & £10 per passenger.
It would start with a briefing at 9am then 3 seasons to start with to familiarise yourself with the track, then open pitlane for the rest of the day, finishing at 4.45pm.
There is a maximum of 48 cars so there should be plenty of tracktime.
I will need to get a minimum of 10 cars for one free leason for everyone from a expert to show you better lines & show you how to do it right.
(sorry no discount for more than 10 cars anymore)
Date = Friday 4th April 2014
Who is up for this? The more the better. Tell a friend. ;D
If you rather I book it later in the year please let me know as date is not confirmed yet.
Me please.
Definitely a good safe track for beginners, it would be nice to see people who want to have a go for the first time. There will be a lot of help on hand.
Count me in please, but the 18th April may not be ideal as it is Good Friday - maybe a week earlier might be better for most, it certainly would be for me ;D
Yes please, count me in ;D

Ok. I will probably do the friday before then. Cant confirm this until dates are posted. We can do august if this is too early for other people? :)
Ok thats four of us so far. :)
Anyone else?I will need more for a group booking?
Dare I take the MGF on track? What do my friends in the club think?

Do it Ken, you know it's really safe there. Be great to see you at a track day again 8)
I doubt I'll be able to make this one but would have loved to.
If anyone is considering then an airfield is a great place to start - loads of room and surrounded by people you know so it'll make a fantastic day!

Almost definitely, I can't agree to this one until at least Feb due to unknown work commitments but if places still happen to be available then i'm sure it could work out.
I think Ken should take the MG - get back on the horse when you fall off etc!
Ok. Dates still to be confirmed yey but maybe either 11th or 25th April.

Ok thats all the normal trackday nuts! Which means as well as a free expert to show you how to do it right you will also get another 5 people to help you out over the whole day. So this is the best opportunity for anyone who hasn't done one & is thinking about it, to give it a go. ;D
Robp do you want to ask your mate if he is up for it? I will ask some a few of my mates that came on our Llandow trackday last june. :)
A former neighbour has nearly bought and Elise so I'm attempting to bring him into the club too - he might be interested in this as he's keen to get on track.
That would be good Darren. The more I can get the better it will be for a club booking. :D
Put me down as a maybe, but it's weather depending
Cheers
Iain
Ok Iainl, but for the group booking we will need to pay up a few weeks in advance to get the club booking, I should know in Janurary when they should have some dates for me. :)
This circuit is great in the rain :)

Thought I'd post this video to show how much safe space you have on this track. There is plenty of room for faster and slower cars to pass with ease. Note the huge run-off, no hitting the armco barriers here.
Airfield days are not about racing each other, in fact that is strictly not allowed - They are all about getting to know your car and bettering your own times and skills, that said lap timing is not allowed either ;) It will be an open pit lane, that means you can spend as much or as little track time as you want. Banter in the paddocks is a big bonus to the day.
It does not matter if you are much slower than some other cars (Like me) all you need do is let them pass. These track days are all about fun, not competition and considering if we get the numbers up, there will be a free tuition session for each driver so it represents great value for money.
This will be a great safe way to have a first go at track days and who knows the bug might bite as I have seen happen to a few club members. So come on, get your names down this could be a great club event.

Sound Limit
The strict rule at Abingdon is 100dB(A) at 0.5 metres and at 4500 rpm, for motorcycle engine cars we require this to be 3/4 of maximum rpm. Additionally cars that rev over 7500 rpm plus rotary type engines and V-tec type engines will also be tested at 3/4 of maximum rpm. Those that are worried about this can get together one day at Castle Combe for free sound testing and possible solutions from Merlin Motorsport on the same site by way of an additional slip on silencer. I'm sure a few of us can be be around to help with this. Most cars should not have a problem.
Put me down as a maybe at this stage.
So who have we got so far?
1, Moleman
2, Lucky Ed
3, The Gaffer
4, Dave Bence
5, Robp
6, KrazyKen (maybe)
7, Grin-a-lot (maybe)

9, Iainl (maybe)
10, Stevel (maybe)
Very tempting - but not sure she'll be finished.
Keep us posted tim. It is a good safe trackday to start with. We will also have Llandow in June if you are not quite ready in April. :)
As Ive never done a track day before could you tell me what is needed car wise to have a go.
Might seem a daft question but dont want to turn up and look to much of a newbie :P :P :P :P :P :P
Garry. All you need is a safe car which is roadworthy. It has be quiet enough to pass the sound test. Apart from that you will need a helmet (You can usually hire one if you don't have one) Any clothing is ok as long as arms and legs are covered. There will be help on hand on the day so nothing to worry about.
I've seen all types of car on track so you font have to drive an all out performance car.
Give it a go 8)
Gary. It really depends on what car you are using for a trackday. Like Phil says The first thing you would need is a helmet. though most trackday venues normally hire them out if you dont have one.
Another good thing would be fuel.
As for the rest I take spare wheels & tyres depending on weather conditions, tools, oil etc. but to be honest for your first one, if you bring spare fuel, a helmet, oil you will be able to borrow tools etc from us 5 regulars, though in most cases you normally never need them. :)
You thinking about it then mate? :)
I tend to take:
Fuel
Oil
Spark plugs
Misc fuses
Spare lengths of wire
Car jack
Socket set
Multimeter and crimp set
Cable ties
Spare fuel/water hose
That tends to rescue most issues I've encountered in my Westfield (I don't have a trailer so need to be able to drive it home). Part of building your "first aid kit" depends on what you know your car's problem areas are. Anything else is a beg/borrow/steal job!
Gary
Even newbies like me in a slow car can have fun. It is not a race and you just let the fast boys past, which in my case is just about everyone. The best part about a BKCC day out is that you can rely on everybody to help you out and take the p*** out of you at the same time. What more could you ask for?? Like Grin a Lot, I have to drive my car there so it is tools, fuel, oil, helmet and driving license. There is always somebody to lend a hand if you need it.
Colin - Are the dates set for Abingdon and Llandow?
Stevel = I wont have dates for Abingdon until the new year, As soon as motorsport events know they will let me know. It will be on a friday & I'm hoping for maybe the 11th.
The Llandow one should be in June. Krazyken should be arranging this one for us. :)

I will do. It's a lot safer than what I have planned for it!
Just to let you all know, going with the 2 x CKC/Omex Llandow track day this year at Llandow so no dedicated BKCC day in June. If you want to do a great club track day this Abingdon track day is the one.
Colin,
I am very likely to do this having watched the comments. I too will need to drive there and back and I am hoping to have full rain-gear by then. Engine and gearbox are begining to loosen-up so its feasible to push it now. I will go firm when you have dates.
Thanks
Ian
Put me down - I'll bring the MX-5 if worse comes to worst.
(Better buy some decent pads as I'll smoke the ones I've got in a lap!)
Sorry guys I'm still waitng for dates! I have contacted them a few times but they still don't know. ::)
Colin - Just had a look at the MSV website, and it says they give 10% discount on the entire booking for club bookings, on a minimum of 5 places and they throw in a garage for free to be based in. Seems pretty good to me and might be of interest for a future event especially for those that want to try a day at a proper circuit such as Oulton or Brands.
Might be an option for later this year 8)
Yes I would be very interested in this please. Thanks Russell

Hi Tony and a warm welcome to our club. Look forward to catching up with you and I know you will enjoy Abingdon. I'm sure Colin will add you to the list soon.
Please feel free to tell us a little about you in the intro section if you feel like it..
Hi I would love to come along with my locost but I fear it will be too loud. As some of you may vouch for I will use the works decimal reader on Monday to test it....does anybody know where I should stand ie how far away and in which position to test. I know I have to take to 8000 revs and it screams.. Thanks :o
Okay - I'm up for it and just need the dates.
R1 james - I think I can help. I have just done this for the IVA. In open-air - you need to be 0.5 metres away from the exahaust and 0.5m above the ground but out of line with the exhaust draft so that it does not blow into the microphone and cause a false overload reading. Use the windshield if you have one. Set to dBA for the correct frequency weighting and set the revs at 4,500 (for the IVA it is only 3000). Strangely induction noise is not measured so it could be quite loud on the other side. :D Colin has just advised that race day mufflers are possible but he will have to advise you on those.

Hi James, Most noise tests are taken at 0.5m away, but they normally stand with the tester at about 45 degrees to the outlet. Your BEC will be tested at 3/4 max revs (probs 8k as you say) but other guys have said that induction noise can be a problem and end up routing the exhaust out of the rear of the car to get round the noise test.
As the Gaffer has said before, if you can get your car to a trackday at Combe, they are happy to do the test for you when they're not busy.
If it will pass there it will pass anywhere 8)
James I have given up trying to get my BEC below 105db but it can be done. AB airbox will do the trick unless your running the stock R-1? Re-pack the end can before the test..
James I managed to get my Aries Locoblade down to 98dbA, it was originally well over 100, after repacking the exhaust and fitting a AB Airbox got it down to around 103dbA then brought a 6in dia exhaust box and got down to 98dbA, but after a couple of weeks had it tested before a track day and it had crept back to 100dbA but the allowed me on the track.
I highly recommend getting down to Castle Combe and getting it tested their as they are very helpful and the equipment they use is calibrated, I originally used a meter from work which was over reading by 3-4 dba. Just give the track a call and check someone will be there to check it.
Cheers
Iain

Hi Wacky, welcome to the club. You are most welcome to join us on this one. As Phil has said it would be nice if you tell us a bit about yourself, what you are driving? maybe even put up a picture of your car? :)
Hi James. I even had noise problems with my new engine. I was over the limit with my Duratec. :o It turned out I needed a bigger silencer as I was getting back pressure issues anyway. So I ended up getting a repackable one, which always means I can put more in it to meet noise regs, then take it out the next day. :D

Been busy with work, and developing a dry sump system for mine i'll post some picks hope to have it running this weekend the complete system will hopefully only cost about 400/450 so seeing people like extreme engines want 1400 for a system it will hopefully be bit of a saving!! ;)
if I have a car ( hopefully by end of the month) then I'm in
Ok Chris. I'm still waiting on dates at the moment. Abingdon are really dragging there heels on releasing dates. ::) :)
OK. 4th April it is then! 8)
I will give you the details tomorrow on what to do. I'm guessing just book in & say your from B.K.C.C. I will ring natasha to comfirm so we get our free tuition for the day. :)
Nice one :)
Iancider is a definite YES. April is quite early for good weather so we must hope it is all rained-out by then. It looks like a really good turn-out.
Ok. Club trackday at Abingdon is on 4th April. 8)
It is in excellent condition, has lots of top quality tarmac and is sure to be a firm favourite on the track day calendar. The track design has a great mix of corners, using the huge amount of space available and long straights with speeds in excess of 100 mph possible in most cars. This is a fantastic venue, not to be missed by any enthusiastic driver!
The strict rule at Abingdon is 100dB(A) at 0.5 metres and at 4500 rpm, for motorcycle engine cars we require this to be 3/4 of maximum rpm. Additionally cars that rev over 7500 rpm plus rotary type engines and V-tec type engines will also be tested at 3/4 of maximum rpm.

or call the hotline number 0844 873 6075 & book it by phone. (not forgetting to say your from B.K.C.C. for your free tuition lesson). :)
It's £129 for a drver, £20 for extra driver & £15 per passenger.
Plese dont delay as it's a first come first serve bases. ;D
Please let me know when you have done this? Thanks. :D

That good news Ian. :)
Anyone else booked yet. Please don't leave it too late!
I'll try and book in the next few days, I need to check how much wadding there is in my silencer, and see how much scope there is to make it quieter.
I've only had a chance to drive the car about 10 miles since I bought it in November, which is rather sad.
Also no roof, so it had better be a dry day!!!
:)
I did notice that MSE are at Castle Combe on the 1/3 which is a Saturday, so an ideal chance to nip up and get the car noise tested in just a couple of weeks time.
Niceone Wacky. Castle combe normally will test your car for you on a trackday if your nice & friendly, though i have known them not too on rare occasions. If this happens speak to the MSE & tell them your going to abingdon with us & they should give you a slip to get it done. :)
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to back-out. It looks like my only working vehicles will be a Series 3 Landy and a Freelander XDi.
Anyone else booked for this yet guys? :)

Yep, I'm good to go. The car has had its usual winter service - all fluids and filters renewed, two new cam belts and all suspension nipples greased. I've also replaced both outer CV joints, as I found a crack in the inner race of one of them :o
Really looking forward to Friday ;D

I would be working my socks off but I still haven't got my pistons back yet :o
The guy doing the job is not happy with the depth of the pockets, so he is taking them down a bit further and has promised them for late tomorrow. A mate who is helping me out is coming on Friday, he's a good lad and is keen on getting a kit for track days as he feels his R1 is a bit risky now he's self employed, so if you see him hanging about please give him a ride if you can. He'll be driving mine as well as I think if he hasn't killed himself at Combe on a bike he should be ok in a slow old car ;D
It's going to be a close run thing but I'm confident I'll be there 8)
Well done Ed,
Happy to give you friend a ride if he feels I am safer than an R1!
Ian
Edd, everyone is welcome to ride with me. It helps to have someone push me back on the track. :P
Colin - I'd bring my plough for you to use, but I've broken that as well ;D
How many are confirmed for Friday?
Thanks Ed. :)
We have only 8 in the end, but we should still be able to get the free tuition I hope. :)
Well done Ed :)
We had a cracking day today it's a shame more people didn't take it up, but maybe next time. :D Motorsport event's Did organize a good enjoyable friendly day. 8)
Sorry Ed couldn't make it but I hear he got it sorted by midday which is good news.
There was 7 of us in the end & we all had near a incident free day with only a minor repair on one of the cars where something came lose. :D
Iancider & his son Crash test dummy (I think) did there first track day & got on really well. ;D
Here is just a couple of pictures at the start of the day. I will post more as well as a video after the weekend.

Not much to add after Colin, we all had a cracking day and it was nice that Motorsport Events still gave us the free tuition, which was great, even though we didnt quite get the numbers up.
Only 3 pics to add, part of our little group, our member Paul came very well equipped in this very nice van and my mate DelBoy on his first trackday in his VW Scirocco, which for a standard road car suffered no brake fade at all after many spirited laps :o

I can highly recommend Abingdon and hope more people come to the next one.
Unlucky Ed didnt quite mange to fix his car for the day, but theres always next time.
Gutted I missed the trackday today, I just ran out of time getting the engine set up after the rebuild, as the valve timing is really critical and didn't want to run the risk of further damage. I used the time I had to get it all up and running properly which I did by lunchtime, but I've still got a problem with the starter as it's not really man enough to turn it over with the extra compression.
I hope you guys all had a good day out, I'm thinking of going to Combe on the 25th April if anybody is interested
A Great day at Abingdon and the weather cooperated. No breakages, no ploughing but I did have a bit of gear trouble until I discovered by clutch cable had re-adjusted itself -soon fixed with Colin's help. Only one car meets immovable object event - fortunately not one of us. Colin and I both thought it was a drifing event momentarily but it added to the fun. Out-ran and AMG Merc which was fun but couldn't stay near Colin. It was sad that Ed didn't make it the end and we hope to see him on the track again very soon.
Photos by Crash Test Dummy (new member) soon to appear on the Forum a video will follow later.

Nice videos Ian, very honest of you to post your spin. It's quite a difficult corner to get right, I found best to turn in late and then make sure you hit the apex, get it pointing up the runway before gunning it - defo slow in, fast out 8)
Still gutted I missed the day though :'(
I did something very similar there too mate. It took me a while to work out the same thing about what Ed says about that corner. I always ended up going wide there until I worked out to go in much slower there. ;)
I went in too hot and braked while turning. That put all of the load on the front offside and the back lifted. It went so fast that I could not counter-steer. Lesson there was to go in on a much bigger radius and keep the power on - it seemed ridiculous but the runway was about 70 metres wide at that point so it just looked stupidly wide but a lot faster. but even then there was so much loose surface that the grass seemed to rush up very quickly on occasions!
Colin had slicks but when he got back in they looked like they were pebble-dashed. The car was full of chippings at the end of the day so I think the track could have done with a sweep on that corner. Perhaps I need Colin's horsepower and then I could have drifted out of it in a plume of blue smoke. :P :P :P :P :P :P
Hell it was a lot of fun! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I have a few pic's from my go pro camera.

I have just been going through the video footage & the bad news is all my footage apart from one of them must have been set on a time delay or something as I only got the start or finish of each season I had done. >:( :(
I would have liked to show you guys the only real mistake I made when I came out on cold tyres & span the car sideways just before the first straight but managed to keep the momentum going & straighten it up & keep going. ::) :o :D
On a good note the one footage I do have almost all of you guys who took part in the track day are on it. 8) 8) Some are on out laps & some are on their warm down laps but I will try to put it up at some point this week. ;D
Here is my only surviving video. It does have most of you guys who went from the club on it. ;D

Sorry it's a bit shaky. It's not done that before. The circuit really wasn't that bumpy. ??? ::) :D
Nice footage.
7.50 Crafty move :-X
Impressively fast Colin.
Thanks guys. :) I did do a very quick shall I? Shan't I on that move mate. ::) :) The guy in that yellow westy had only bought it a week before the track day so it was all very new to him. :)
Nice driving Colin was there anybody you didnt overtake :D :D
QuoteNice driving Colin was there anybody you didnt overtake
Yes, himself..... but it was close. ;D
That looks like you had a lot of fun, shame I couldn't get the cyclone ready in time. Roll in Llandow :D
Thanks guys. There was a few other cars out there that was also very quick. To be honest if Dave Bence had I camera on his car then he would also have a lot of footage of him overtaking everything. 8) & Paul in his Mev was going really well too. ;D
There was a Ariel Atom there that was very quick along with some orange Japanese thing that was really fast in a straight line.
Hi All,
Thanks for allowing me to come along with your group booking. :)
My first airfield day so wasn't quite sure what to expect, but an enjoyable day and would go back as something different to a 'normal' trackday at a circuit venue.
The space allowed me to gain more confidence with powering through the corners without worrying about the runoff.
I've managed a video allowing Colin past and then sticking with him for a couple of laps, as you can see with a bit of heat in the tyres and with clear traffic we gain over 5 seconds a lap...

That was nice to watch Paul. 8) Most of my video's didn't work for some reason? I never knew what sort of lap times I was doing so I know now. ;D I said you was quick. ;D
What were you using to video it? I like the two forward & backward views was it two camera's you had & how did you get the map up as well?
Yes good footage Paul. We must all do another day there it was a really good day out.
I like the video technique as well Paul - hope you have got the fuel starvation problem sorted now.
Thanks for the comments.
I'd be up for another day as it's closer than meeting you all at Llandow ! (although see you in May with CKC/Omex ?)
Video is from a Race Technology Video 4 unit http://www.race-technology.com/video4_2_7539.html (http://www.race-technology.com/video4_2_7539.html)
I have two bullet cameras on the rollbar, one forward and one rear.
It links to both the Dash2 and DL1 (with GPS) so I can log all sorts of data and create an overlay on the video. It's a bit over the top for my needs but it's a nice integrated system.
The trackmap uses Google data, for the proper tracks I tend to just use an outline, but I thought for the airfield the map was quite good as it gave placement of the runway.
I simply record all the data logging and video onto a CF card and then load up the analysis software at home and add a lap marker. I can then see how I progressed in the day and export laps to video.
I can draw laps based on speed for instance; blue is slowest -> red fastest;

I'm going to put up a post about the fuel starvation issue if anybody has any ideas...
Thanks,
Paul
Nice piece of kit there 8)
