Title: Cadwell park track day
Post by: Iancider on 28, August, 2014, 10:00:28 PM
Thinking about next year perhaps? A motocyclist friend was intrigued by my positve comments on Oulton Park and raves about Cadwell Park.  This one is a pretty long reach - basically head to Sheffield and turn right stopping just short of the North Sea.  This has to be the skinniest racetrack there is and it appeals to motorcuclists because it is like the ultimate country lane but without killer trucks coming the other way!  It would be a pretty interesting track due to this oddity.  MSV and Javelin both operate there.

It's on our wish list Ian, but as you say it's a long way and could even be a two nighter :o

Hopefully you'll have your slicks by then and you'll be joining in ;D ;D ;D

I love Cadwell.  A really great circuit.

It is narrow but it's no problem for cars and you don't notice it.  I may try to get a day in this year; Sept/Oct, as there are a number of dates available.

It's a fair drive to Lincolnshire but an easy enough journey.  Definitely an overnighter (night before).

Count me in ;D ;D ;D

I notice Trackdays are listing Donington GP on 2nd Nov, might be worth investigating after last years sucess 8)

Wow - great enthusiasm!

The distance is a bit sobering though.  It would be a three day event.  The trailer tow each way would be about five hours driving plus stops.  Should we hire a car transporter?  ;)

Or maybe make it a spectacular drive up and take a support vehicle with all of the tools, tyres and empty fuel cans.  Oh yes and a few spare wings!

Or several could drive and we could take one trailer as the stretcher bearer for any car that goes lame.

Its a fair drive, but more like 3 1/2 to 4 hours.  Last time I went it took me 4 hours including stops to get there but Lincolnshire was thick fog so I was crawling along.  I wouldn't fancy it without a trailer but my car has no windscreen or heater.

I plan to go up the night before and come back to Bristol after the trackday.

I still can't decide which is my favourite circuit; Cadwell or Oulton.  That's why I have to go and do some more analysis!  Oh, and there is Donington as well too!  Mmm.  :P

I could probably make most of those dates Rob. I think the one on the 13th will be the one and the same, as Trackdays seem to list everything going, and appear to be booking agents for most companies. The Monday might appeal to some as, it will only involve one day off work if we travel up on the Sunday.

I'm pretty flexible - any other thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea, would prefer any Monday. I'd take the trailer, and stay over night on the Sunday...
Nov 3rd could be interesting... Although I might need to invest in some of those "wet" tyres you were going on about rob :-)

OK, one of the Monday dates looks good.

Any preference; 13th Oct or 3rd Nov?

Here are a few dates.  There is lots of availability at the moment.  There are others but this gives a good idea of price.

Mon 25th May £189 MSV (bank holiday)
Thu 28th May £149 Javelin (actually, I probably cannot do this one :().
Fri 5th June £159
Wed 24th June £149 Javelin (this is my favourite at the moment)
Sat 4th July £189 Javelin
Fri 10th July £169
Thu 16th July £150
Mon 24th August £149 Javelin

I'd rather not do a Friday myself.  Getting back from Lincolnshire on a Friday night after a day of driving on circuit won't be nice.

My plan would be travel up the night before and come home after the event.

The first 3 dates are no good for me, so 24th June is looking good for me too, but will have to check 8)

I would be up for 24th June but rather do 4th July only as I don't need to use holiday but I am happy to use it for this though.  8)

Is it the whole circuit for that day mate? only asking as some circuits do do a shorten version at time & I would love to do the whole thing.

Just been looking up places to stay. This one seems good value with a large private car park behind the pub to cater for track day people with car & trailer. They also don't mind late arrivals & 3 miles from the circuit.

I will show you the details to see what do you think?

My car has already been round Cadwell just not with me driving it! Search youtube for cosworth fisher fury and you'll see it being driven very well (and fast) by a previous owner. Or click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEBuHiTesAg

It seems it's been round most of the well known tracks!!

I would love to go but as I have yet to do my 1st track day later this year I think I'll get a few laps experience under my belt before I try the more serious and further away circuits as I have no idea how reliable the car will turn out to be (even though it's a veteran of track days and has been well tested on them) or for that matter how good I will be (or not!!)

If you haven't got time to watch the whole video, watch minutes 18 to 25 (ish) he slaughters some saloons on the straights and really gets into the swing of things on the bends!!!

It looks an awesome circuit, fab sweeping curves and some nice elevation changes plus some great straights to really get your boot down!

We all had a fantastic day at Cadwell, now I know why Robp was so keen to go back. It's a daunting circuit the first time you go out with loads of blind crests and turn in points, but after 2 or 3 sessions you start to learn where you can push. All the cars ran well and there were hardly any red flags or queues, the only problem for me was it was warm day and my car was getting damn hot, so it cut down the length of my stints a bit - but all in all a superb day - can't wait to go back 8)

More reports and videos to follow.

Video of the last session of the day. The three of us managed to get out together, and I was chuffed to be able to hang on to the tail of them with some late braking - until Rob decided to sod off into the distance! It got red flagged half way through after someone clattered the markers at the chicane that I just managed to miss. Near the end Adam goes flying by in his green Caterham, followed by a really well sorted M3 on slicks. I cut my session a bit short as the car was really hot, the two small gauges on the middle are oil and water respectively, and they're nearly on the stops :o - some work needed there me thinks.

I had a great day at Cadwell with Ed, Colin and Adam.

I have been to Cadwell before a few years ago so I remembered my way around and was able to put my clog down early on.  What a circuit.  I loved flying down the pit straight and chucking it up the hill around Coppice and Charlies.  The Chris Curve is great to test your grip (and balls). The best bit for me; The Hall Bends, wow.

I have been considering various upgrades and changes to the Westfield recently.  However, I have to say there was absolutely nothing I want to change about the car at Cadwell.  It was perfect and gave me the confidence to really push it.  The tyres were all wearing evenly and getting nice and hot giving loads of grip.  I could stand on the brakes and really throw it through the corners (of which there are plenty at Cadwell!).

My mission this time was to get the car airborne over the Mountain.  Well, I tried my best.  I came out of my seat, the rear wheels span up, the engine hit the limiter, but sadly no air.  In fact no-one managed it.  Perhaps if I turned my diffuser around to give lift....  ::)

There was about 48 cars at the event.  The track takes 32 at a time so there was no queuing to get on circuit.

I have been think about what is my favourite circuit in the UK; Donington, Oulton, Cadwell?  Well, there is no question now from my point of view; Cadwell is the Daddy.  The only problem, why is it so far away!!

I really want to do this one again. It was great & looking at both your video's guys I can even see where I think I can do better from braking later to being more aggressive around the corners.  8) It will really take a lot to beat this circuit. You are right Rob I wish it was closer.  ;D

I forgot to add that watching my car from Ed's video got me wondering if I need to stiffen up my springs on the back as it looks like it is leaning over a lot on the corners? But I could be wrong.

Looks like an amazing day out guys!!!! Very cool indeed, I'm envious.

Not sure if any of you noted any of your laptimes, but this may interest you. I make avid notes on things (ok so I am ever so slightly OCD, some of you have noticed before!!!!)

From a past episode of Fifth Gear, in a £53k Lotus Exige S, Vicky Butler-Henderson lapped with the race mode on in 1 min 12.4 secs, Karun Chandhock (ex F1 driver) lapped in the same car in 1 min 10.6 secs with race mode off (no driver aids). I would guess they had the track to themselves with zero traffic issues.

Did anyone get anywhere near close???

I never even thought about timing the laps as I was too busy learning the circuit.  :)

Just had a quick try on Robs video. I missed the first bit with traffic. Then went from passing the BMW just before the start/finish line, a little bit of traffic but not really enough to worry about got the next 3 laps at 1:43secs followed by a 1:44 then another 1:43.

I must move that blooming inertia switch to under the dash so I can reset it from my seat.  I hit the kerb at Mansfield and that was that. It's not the first time that has happened. ::)

I clocked Rob on a 99.5% unhindered lap at 1:43.25 !!!

Couple of questions Rob if you don't mind, what engine do you have and if you are using a GoPro how are you getting such a good engine noise and such little wind noise pls mate? I really struggle with that on my car.

I wish I'd known people were timing; I'd of tried a bit harder.  ;D ;D

The car runs a stock Duratec (std. cams and head) with throttle bodies.  I have been considering various upgrade options, but to be honest, it is great as it is.  8)

I know what you mean about poor sound quality at speed.  I have an external lavalier microphone located under the dash near the transmission tunnel (hence some gearbox noise).  I've run a lead up the rollbar to the GoPro.

Interesting, I never thought of that. May give it a go as your sound is miles better than mine. Just waaaaaay too much wind noise on my GoPro.

From a slightly different angle. HD and full screen it and watch a couple of laps from 10.30. Think I would feel much safer in a car :o

I agree. Whats the point of having knee sliders if you leave an inch gap! ;)

I have an original gopro hero and it doesnt seem to have an external mic jack socket so that's that great idea down the pan. May have to invest in a newer gopro

There is another possibility - a digital sound recorder.  This needs to be secured under the dash out of the wind and set to auto-levelling.  Before putting it there switch on and start the camera.  Clap your hands in front of the camera - this gives you a synchro point for sound and vision.  It works well but this methods does presume you have some video software to dub-on the sound.

Another wheeze is to mount the camera with its solid back on the nosecone.  There is loads of conducted engine noise there and virtually no ancillary noise and little wind noise.

Thanks for the great ideas Ian. I have also tried it with a skeleton back fitted and taped up one half of the holes in the back (the side furthest away from the exhaust outlet). This did improve things a bit but there was still too much wind noise for my liking.

I can mount the gopro nearer to the exhaust but then as it has to be on the roll bar all I get is the back of my head (not a pretty sight!)

If you look closely mate I had to duck because the BMW was spraying grass all over me at that point.  ::)

Our westys are very close mate. I have a little more power but Robs is slightly lighter & doesn't have the windscreen to slow him down.
And he is better than me at track days but I can almost keep with him now.  :D

Well he shouldn't be smoking weed while he's driving should he, isn't that illegal???  :D

It looked an awesome day out I have to say. Hopefully next year I will be there with you learning the ropes. Not sure in what car yet tho as am still undecided on what direction to take on that front. The Tiger will be gone for sure so it will depend what happens between now and then.

As it stands I can see me selling everything to buy a proper fast bit of kit like yours and a trailer! Driving fast on the road is ok but as I've got older I have calmed down a lot and realised the risks more and more, it kinda puts you off a bit. Besides there is only so much you can do on road conditions, it ain't like it was back in the late 70s early 80s when I used to race my Lotus all over the place flat out against anyone who wanted a tear up. You just can't do it these days  :( Through the Cotswolds in 1982 at 126mph down the Fosse Way against a Rover SD1 3500, great drive that was!! No police, no traffic lights, no cameras, lots of fun tho!!!

I got told off by some woman yesterday for making too much noise! That's what it's come to in Britain today!! I was disturbing her peace and quiet in her garden apparently!! I must admit the Tiger is LOUD!! I'd put a new silencer on her but she is being sold soon in any case  :( sad to see her go but it's time to move on for next year now.

Re-awakening this thread - Been playing on Project Cars with my son on his PS4 and we were having a go at Cadwell park in a Caterham and it reminded me of the videos posted here so we set up the laptop with the videos playing and waited on the start line on the PS4 for one of you to come round then checked how we compared. There are two caterham options in the game, a 620 superlight and a "classic". In the 620 we could easily leave behind any of the VFC (as long as we stayed on the track) but in the Caterham Classic we could just about keep up, pretty much matched all the way around the circuit once we'd learned the track. From this I conclude that that the game physics are pretty good so before going to any new circuit it would be well worth learning the track on a good sim game like project cars. Unfortunately it doesn't have Combe or LLandow and surprisingly there isn't a GTM! They will be adding additional tracks and cars as DLC though so you never know!

I have never been any good on computer games. but perhaps it is different on on with the seat & peddles etc. Saying that I'm good at spider solitaire not that that would help.  :)

DLC??

Down Loadable Content - basically a way for the game authors to keep milking more money out of players by selling additional add-ons!

Hadn't tried it without but Matt was saying its impossible to drive that game without a steering wheel and pedals because the analogue inputs need to be so precise - if you floor the throttle it will fish tail, if you slam on the brakes it will lock up and go straight on. Was having great fun with clio racers as they understeer like crazy if you use too much gas and the Caterham 620 is very tail happy. You have to feed everything in gently to get the best lap times.
