Title: Engine Replacement.
Post by: Moleman on 16, July, 2013, 10:02:01 PM
Ok. Here we go. Out with the old & busted.  :'( & in with the New & upgrade.  ;D

I started to strip the bits tonight.
(http://s12.postimg.org/5wit6y53t/P1050402.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/5wit6y53t/)

It ended going better than I hoped.  :D
(http://s17.postimg.org/z67o04xij/P1050403.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/z67o04xij/)

I never noticed this until it came out.  :o
(http://s15.postimg.org/4y7ay2hif/P1050406.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/4y7ay2hif/)

All out now. Never intended to get this far tonight.  :o

Put a temporary engine in for now. It's mean looking but has backfire issue's!  :P

I will be starting on taking the old wiring loom from my old Throttle bodies tomorrow.  :)

Hi Colin, judging by picky 3 there must have been one hell of a punch up between the internals of the lump when it finally let go :( .See you on Sat at meeting place and it looks as if the weather will be good this time. Not like Dyrham  Park (soggy)
All the best with the mechanical stuff 8) 8)

It was a 6 hour round trip but worth it.  :)
Just picked up a new engine from Langford Performance Engineering. They mainly build/Rebuild Ford Cosworth F1 engines. Which they was happy to show me a few F1 engine they are working on at the moment.  8) but they also do alot of other V8's aswell these days.  :)

When I contacted them about a Duratec they had for sale I found out it has only been built for a test, run on a Dyno for 5 hours, then stripped down, checked over & rebuilt again. The only thing that was wrong with it was the fact it didn't have a low line racing sump. When I said that I would need one of these, they ordered a new top of the range one for it & said they would put it on with no extra charge.  :o

(http://s16.postimg.org/ak8dmb7o1/2013_07_21_14_17_18.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/ak8dmb7o1/)
They found out the compamy our on a holiday shutdown so said to me if I send them my Pully wheels & Altenator they would put these on & put a right size belt for me while we wait for the sump.
(http://s15.postimg.org/3snfcfgl3/2013_07_21_15_16_48.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/3snfcfgl3/)
It has Jenvey Throttle bodies on it which is twice the size as my old one's.  :o 8)
(http://s10.postimg.org/lntoyq2l1/2013_07_21_15_21_48.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/lntoyq2l1/)
It look's like I will also have to modify my bonet with those Throttle bodies.  ::)
(http://s10.postimg.org/69d1ekiol/2013_07_21_15_22_11.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/69d1ekiol/)
It is a 270BHP with Cosworth running gear, Pistons,Cam rods, bolts etc. with roller chainkit with vernier gears & 4way coil on plug.
If my calculations are right it will mean my car will go from 200 BHP / 363BHP pre tonne to 270BHP / 490BHP per tonne. ( i will see when I do the rolling road). ;D
(http://s24.postimg.org/4ppswec6p/2013_07_21_15_22_17.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/4ppswec6p/)

Langford Performance Engineering has also given me advice on Oil's, Oil pressure's, Oil coolant system, ( for which I am also upgrading). They are getting me the correct ECU & loom for that spicify engine so the rolling road won't have much to do. They have also given me advice on how to improve the airflow to the engine & how to get the best result for track & road running.
They even if I have problem's getting certain parts then call them & they will see what they can do, Or if I want advice on anything just ring them.
I think they may regreat that. :P

So It's going to be abit more work than I was planning but never mind.  ??? ::) :P

That is one serious package there as Rob says that will fly. What gearbox are you running with the engine? Even an uprated type 9 is at the top end of the power it can handle there, if it is an MT75 box you will be eating boxes from now on. Stick a good close ratio box on the end of that and you will pass anything you want at Combe.

Jeff

Thanks for the advice. I do have the MT75. I will be leaving it in for now but may upgrade later.
I did wonder if it will be man enough & I have been told it should be fine so I will see how it goes as the car ain't that heavy.   :)

Quick update. Still waiting for E.C.U. & LOOM.

so while I'm waiting I started on the new oli coolant system I'm putting in.
(http://s21.postimg.org/52r992k8j/2013_07_31_21_30_13.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/52r992k8j/)

I also made a new air intake to suck up extra air into the oil coolant radiator.
(http://s7.postimg.org/q63lgc0xj/2013_07_30_17_26_45.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/q63lgc0xj/)

It will go just behind the nose cone, inline with the wheels & higher than the sump so it should be enough clearance?
I have made a template just incase though).  ::)
(http://s16.postimg.org/epv8893n5/2013_07_30_17_25_10.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/epv8893n5/)

Then had a good mate in the name of Fullpint do a really good job in powder coating it for me. Thank's Steve.  :D
(http://s16.postimg.org/k58jmykkx/2013_08_01_14_51_06.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/k58jmykkx/)

Also fitted the new Throttle bodie air fliters & throttle cable. You won't beleive it but It fit's without having to cut the bonet as there is a bulge right where I needed it! :o 8)
(http://s2.postimg.org/62l8g0bed/2013_08_01_18_35_26.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/62l8g0bed/)

Not alot of room anymore. I haven't even put the water pipe's in yet.
(http://s23.postimg.org/5trqwvzuv/2013_08_01_18_35_52.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/5trqwvzuv/)

Even moved the new upgraded fuel pump so I can jack the back of the car up without It getting in the way. As it was located on the back subframe just where it is best for the jack.

That's really impressive, I know you blame me for getting you hooked on track days and costing you a fortune, but you would only spend your money on cruises, wild nights out, women etc. so at least now you have something worthwhile to show for it.

It's up & running!  :D but There are problems. It runs great, it works great. It goes up to 8000 now instead of 7000. but the rolling road results are nowhere near what i was promised.  ::)
the engine guys & mapping guys each say different things as to why? from manifold not the right sort to the rolling road might be out? all i know at the moment is i'm not getting what i paid for.
I will just have to see how it runs as ive not had the chance yet so alot of testing is on the cards as from tomorrow.  :D

Post by: Moleman on 05, September, 2013, 09:41:26 PM
It's about 210bhp. We have been looking into it & the engine guys a got it from have also been trying to source the reason? we were hoping for about 250bhp when you take exhaust, sump etc but not this much drop. There are a few thing we are looking into so all is not lost yet. :)

What I will say is that I have now had a chance to try it on some fast roads & ok it is definitely much quicker top end & acceleration!  :o :o 8) 8) ;D

Engine update.

Well after two trackdays & some time to get used to the new engine I must say I'm really happy with the new engine despite the rolling road malfunction. I can really say it is a rocket up to the last one & that one was quick. I even managed to knock off 4 seconds at combe & that was on the 888's. I'm getting quite good at combe now but not that good! :o 8)

So I'm now sure the guy who built the engine is right & they didn't do the rolling road right. The engine was 270BHP on the dyno so I should probably get about 230-240BHP after taking away all the factors of it being in the car.  Which it may well be now :)

On the last trackday my car failed the noise test, it went from 99 on the first trackday to 103 on the second one only a few weeks after! :o
but to my shock & surprice they let it go due to the fact there wasn't many there that day & if they don't get any complaints then they will let it go.  :o   I thought I'd won the lottery! As I have never ever known them to be lenient with there noise tests.  8)

It turns out my exhaust silencer was empty. I have literally blown out all my stuffing.  ::)
So I went to a few places to get quotes for that & maybe a new manifold as I'm told that could make a differance?
They all told me that the manifold is the best configuration I could have & not worth changing but Dave from Interpro told me that I need a bigger silencer for that engine & the best thing for it was a longer repackable one. which they could costum build & I would be able to pack it to what is required to pass any trackday & then unpack it to what ever I like.  ;D

Then he proceeded to ask how the rolling road went? When I told him it ended up a cock up the first thing he asked was "Did they strap the back end down on the rollbars or you will get a false reading with light weight kit cars?"  ??? ??? ??? ???

So long story short, The engine guys are sending him the info he needs & It's booked in this thursday for the exhaust to be done, followed by a rolling road to give it a final tweeking.  ;D
So I will finally know what it is. Not that it matters that much As I am really pleased with it now but it will be just nice to know what it really is pushing now? :D

It is abit longer to be able to do the trackdays ok. It does work a bit too good so I may take some stuffing out for road use.  ;D

The rolling road went much better. due to the last mess up it did need some tweeking, but the engine is now
257BHP Giving it 544BHP per tonne! 8)

Good result Colin but not wishing to wee on your bonfire I am not sure you have got your maths right?  Based on 544 bhp/ton and 257 bhp your car must weigh 472 kg.  Is it really that light??  To get bhp/ton you need to divide power bhp by weight in kg and then multiply by 1000.  So for a low powered heavyweight like my Tiger 156 bhp / 650 kg would give a measly 240 bhp/ton.

Either way that is going to be a quick car, 257 bhp is a lot of motor whatever your car weighs!!  Enjoy.............

Giving it 544BHP per tonne! 8)

OMG....... YOU SHOULD HAVE FUN WITH THAT!

........ be even more power for ploughing at Combe :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D

steve you might be right. My car is 520kg. so going by steve's calulations it's 494bhp per tonne. I just went by what the garage worked out per tonne.  ::) ;D  still pleased at 257bhp though.  :D

Ed forget ploughing, I'm going to start tunneling now!  ;D

Still good figures Colin 8)

Actually I stand corrected after re-reading your terminology of bhp per tonne rather than bhp per ton.  Tonne is the old imperial measure rather than ton being a metric ton of 1000kg.  1 tonne is actually 1.102 ton so you are absolutely correct at 544 bhp per tonne.  I will get my coat!!

Sorry to be a pedant Steve, but the metric tonne is the newer prefered SI unit and the ton is the old imperial unit. the figure you quote of 1 tonne = 1.102ton is for the US short ton so........................

1 tonne (1000kg) = 2204.62lb / .984 UK ton / 1.102 US short ton

1 UK ton = 2240lbs / 1.016 tonnes / 1.12 US short ton

the figure of 494bhp/tonne is correct............. I think, but now I'm confused as well!

All I know is circa 500 hp/tonne is one hell of a lot 8) ;D

Confirmed the total equation is as follows;

(1 x Westfield) + 257bhp Duratec = FQ.
Or in laymans term "F@@@ing Quick"

Enjoy it Colin, as the Loreal advert says, you know you are worth it!!

Ok had a few noise issues with the new engine in November. Had to bow out of a few trackdays as I wasn't sure what it was.  :-[
It got abit louder in December so I decided not to use it until I found out the cause of the noise.  ::)

It sounded like the chain tensioner had broken so I contacted the guy who built the engine. It was something I could fix but they said they would look at it just incase it wasn't that.

Well I took it up there on monday, stayed there while they checked it out, put a camera in the engine then they decided to take the front off as everything did point to the chain.
I left them to it at this point then the following day they called me to say they changed the tensioner but the niose is still there!!???

They were certain it was this along with me aswell. So they said they would dig deeper into the fault. They ended up taking the engine out, strip it down & check pistons 1 & 2 as it could be piston slip? They did this & found no fault with anything on the engine????  They are now putting it on their dyno to see if this will show up the fault?  so it's a wait & see now. :-[

How much is this now costing me? well the engine never came with a warranty. I told them I don't have any money left & not to do anything without my say so as I can't spend any more on it.  :-[
They decided to do all this other work as they still don't know what it is & would like to find the fault as a matter of pride, reputation & it's really bothering them that they are not sure what it was & they want to fix it.  So most this work is on them.  :o :o :o and I will just need to pay a fraction of the cost.

So fingers crossed they find it.  :)  I will keep you up dated.

Well I picked it up today & it is all sorted.  8)
Long story very short as it's all abit technical for me.  :-[  It ended up getting stripped & put on the dyno twice, with technical support from cosworth we have found out that it was the Gudgeon pins thats making the noise at 1500revs. Which apparently is normal for this high revving race engine as it needs a bigger clearance gap of 1.5 instead of .8 (sorry forgot what measurement they said) to allow it to rev at higher rev's for what it is designed to do. Cosworth said it's a design fault & assured us that it wont do any harm.
The guys have said it is completely fine inside & once it's warmed up & you get passed 1500revs the engine will always sound better.

One thing they have discovered while it was on the dyno is that my oil pressure gage it out by miles! :o May be another reason why it went pop? ::) They was able to tell me by how much so until I get it sorted I know where it has to be on my gage.

Well once I got it home the sun was out so i did what had to be done & took it out.  8)
I will say it went like a rocket.  8)

So just got to put on the new hot climate, race radiator & new oil pressure sensor.  ;D

Well Now that it's running great. I got around to fitting on the new radiator yesterday. It had to be a bigger one to accomadate the new lump.

Sorry Hairy Santa I know what your gonna say. "Thats more weight I've added" I could always drill some weight saving holes in it?  :P
