Just had my renewal through for my breakdown cover, although  The Hood is covered, there might be a additional charge for specialised equipment to get it home, has any one come across this before?

'The Gaffer'

Never heard of that before. Breakdown cover is exactly that, they are avin a laugh ;D

Sounds to me like they've had a few problems loading low kit cars onto larger recovery vehicles and had to call for additional different vehicles. Thats hardly your fault if they havent got the right equipment. Tell 'em where to go and go somewhere else.

What recovery company are you using. The only people that I could find that would cover a kit car was either the AA or the RAC. The others that I approach didn't want to know as soon as I mentioned kit car.....

I quite like the AA/RAC as they will cover the person, so I can sit in any car and order it to be taken home.

The RAC said it probably would not be a problem but if the car was to low to drive it up the ramp on to the lorry they would charge for "special equipment".   I told them they could tow it behind a van on tow bars so whats their problem?

It is the RAC that I am already with. I initially got covered for my motor bike, pushing a bike with a flat tyre is no fun, so when the reminder came through,I gave them a bell to ask them about the kit car, after about 10 mins over the phone with the guy humming and debating,he said that they would cover it, thats when the question of specialised equipment came up at extra cost to me if they needed it.But I suppose its better to have some cover, than non at all.

Why dont you shop around for another quote?

Furore Phil

The AA are pretty good, they cover you and not the car. I've had to call them out in the past when I have been the passenger.

They also helped me out during my classic car days when I had a TR7, only complaining when I called them out four times in one year... (good old reliable British sportscars !)

The only problem I can see is if they have a tow bar - where can you connect it to a kit car ?

They could  use a van with a wheel hoist on it.....the front wheels are strapped onto the hoist bar then raised.   You get pulled along on the back wheels only.

I changed to the RAC 'cause the AA drivers don't go outside their "area".    I broke down in Cornwall once and needed to get the car back to Frome.  They dropped me at the Devon border and I had to change to another car transporter!!  Not funny late at night with a 2 hour change over.

RAC insures me for my van, car and kitcar or any vehicle I am travelling in on the card.

I was recovered a while back in a freinds car and had a long chat with the recovery driver. He said that all recovery drivers now are limited to mileage they do, and if it exceeds a certain amount they have to transfer you to another company / driver, and so on for as long as your journey.

This apparently is law now in an attempt to stop horiffic accidents like the one a while back when a recovery truck ploughed into the back of a car on a motorway, from memory a newly wed was among the dead. Very sad story.

He says its a real pain in the arse, but the law is the law.

Don't bother with Green Flag.....they're useless!!      Broke down once using them.....took them 2 hours to find me!!     I told them I was by the pier on the coast road and the driver said he couldn't find me......I was in a bright orange Fiesta with black stripes all over it (he must have been blind).

I told them the alternator had gone (light had been on for 2 hours) they took me to a garage and left it outside! ....nice!!

I got a bill from them 3 weeks later saying I was not covered because the battery was flat and that no major component was defective......what the f**ks the alternator if its not the major electrical component!

Took me 2 months to sort them out!! >:( >:(

Got a quote from the AA, £35 dearer,so I will be sticking to the RAC.

Got to disagree about Green flag, I bloke down on the way to work yesterday, Managed to get a lift home to get my details and arrange for the pick up by the time I was back at the car (15mins later) they were already there dropped home and started the Bulldog for me as the battery was flat. Top service for me.

I have an account with Lloyds Bank, it covers me for holiday insurance and vehicle breakdown and recovery.  BUT and you'll never believe this NOT for an accident, that will cost £110 for recovery.  As we found out when my wife had a drunk Eastern European bloke drive in the back of her at 3.30pm in the afternoon just after picking up my daughter from school.  Pi**ed at 3pm, don't get me started!!! >:(

So they cover me and the wife for all our cars, and holiday insurance, plus accidental cover at home for drains etc for £15 per month.

Just the same as Mark, free with the Lloyds account, and I used them a couple of months ago when they had to hire a special recovery truck to put the GT40 on when the driveshaft gave up the ghost, fairly quick service I thought

must ask him about this drain thing though  ;) might be due to being in SHEPTON MALLET - hear they get a few problems down there  :-X
