Now that it seems to be slightley warmer, going to spend tomorrow (Tues) working on the hood-O what joy. Can't wait to get at it again. I would like to think that I could be back on the road by the beginning of March. Getting withdraw symptoms by not driving it!

know how you feel got a bit of work done on my xr today still got some pipe's to fix  and washed the salt off of 3 car's too

I managed to cover my new dash by Xmas........ hope to get the dials and wiring sorted tomorrow now its a bit milder.

Be nice to do the New Years Day run if its not to cold!! ;)

I'll post a pic. when its finished.

Yeah im hoping to get my engine changed over by news year , all I got to do is lift the knackered one out and put new one in and plumb in then ill have to take it out for a test drive coo cant wait

I was planning to spend loads of time in the garage, but it's been my pemerature that's been the problem. Bit of a case of man flu. Oh well, got to spend it with the kids.

Hopefully I'll get some time tomorrow (wednesday). Fitting the nose at the moment

I started to replace my back brake shoes, the gatters on the half shafts and I fitted some longer wheel studs.

I've just been so lame with the cars of late  :-[ Just not thinking of getting out and doing any workon them for the moment, what with the cold and now the wet weather just not inspired enough. Have got quite a few bits ready to go in 3 of the cars. Once the kids are back to school then I must make a push and get going again, or I'mnever going to clear my dinning table  ;)

I wish you lot would stop doing so well with the garage time :(

I was hoping to get some work done on the car but finally decided to change the Discovery ECU controlled system to a mechanical one (long story) and when I got it started it ran off into oblivion :o Thought the turbo seal had gone and was waiting for the engine to self destruct on sump oil but thankfully, once I'd disconnected the feed to the stop solenoid it ran for another 4-5 seconds then stopped. So it must be overfuelling from somewhere, but at least it will still turn over thank god!

But I am determined to get some garage time before I go back to work.

Part way through replacing the camshaft which is showing signs of wear.




The problem here is a main cross member is in the way and there is insufficient room to remove the pulley...


If you look carefully there are dark smudges on the edge of the cam lobes which is an indication that it is time to replace.

From where I'm sitting the cam looks pretty good, remember that the cam lobes are ground at a slight angle to ensure that the lifters rotate.  Polish on one side and dark on the other may be normal.

The cam. don't look that bad to me either......as long as the lobes aren't pitted or wearing through to the none-hardened base metal i wouldn't bother to much. ::)

I've just added another photo of the cam as I am obviously interested in the above comments. This photos shows the darker discoloration marks better. Getting the cam out is going to be difficult because of all of the super-structure that is in the way. What I have done so far won't take long to re-fit and to date I have purchased nothing.

To me the lifters look like they are predominently running on the outside of the cam.

What do we think, is the cam worn?

Also what do we think about Rhoads bleed down lifters allowing higher revs and better tickover, as opposed to standard lifters? The cam is Real Steel 262 Viper Hurricane Cam which may give a reasonable tickover without specialist lifters.

Still think your a bit premature with the cam change.

As for the lifters......you don't thrash your Hood much you told me, so do you really need them?

This is just my opinion you understand, its down to you in the end..... ::)

I'm confused (this is not unusual!), is the Real Steel cam the one that might be worn or are you planning to fit it.  If you are changing to an aftermarket cam it needs to be degree'ed correctly, this is a lot easier with the engine out.
Haven't had any experiance with the Rhoads lifters, seems there are a lot of variables in using leak down to control valve lift/timing especially on the Rover with the non-adjustable valve train.  The stock lifters have a long travel (3 mm/.120") to allow for valve train variations.

if your going to do the camshift i would do the lifter's to as the they  wear together whan i had my cvh apart  (i know it's not the same enigne) to do the head gasket i fitted new lifter's to try and get rid of my top end rattle it work a bit still got rattel but not as bad i would wait for a bit and do a top end rebuild and do it all in one go

your best bet is to pull the lifters and have a look how the hardened face is coping, this will give you a fair indication on whether to change the cam or not

Please DO NOT reuse the lifters if you do fit a cam - fit new - you will be sorry if you do - they must bed in together as matching pairs  - have a look on the cobra site re breaking cams in

The engine already has a 262 Viper Hurricane Cam by Real Steel and Rhoad bleed down lifters that only get to their full height over 3500rpm. I was going to replace 'like with like' but I am questioning whether I need the Rhoad lifters as there is a lot of tappet noise on tick over making the engine sound like a bag of bones.

The advantages of the Rhoad lifters is you get a nice even tick over (but noisy), extra low down torque, and the ability for the engine to rev higher. A slight disadvantage is a loss in oil pressure because of the way the lifters operate (possibly not good on a low pressure Rover V8).   

My question is am I better fitting  standard lifters with this a mid to fast road cam (262) which would giving me a much quieter engine. My worry is I will have an erratic tick over and will I lose on low end torque.

Also, and the most important question .... do we think the cam needs replacing based on the new photo that I have attached. The lifters look like they are running on the outside of the cam and we have brown stain marks showing where the lifters are not touching the cam. I am no expert with this so any advice is welcome.

Everytime I have heard your engine, it sounded ok to me.

Looks like a lot of un-necessary work to me.

Good advice from Pete, while you are at this stage it's a good idea to check the lifter faces.  The slight convexivity ??? on the lifter face is difficult to see (I think it's on something like a 33 foot radius) but if you hold the base of two lifters together you should see it when you hold them up to the light.
On the subject of Rover V8 valve train noise, if the steel cups in the rocker arms come loose they sound just like lifter clatter, easy to check while you have the rocker shafts off.

Well i have managed to finish putting in the new engine and get out for a quick drive around the estate which was good if a bit chilly im just glad its done now just a couple of things to sort out the gear change needs tighting up and the exhaust manifold seems to be blowing a bit but apart from that all good

Spent  a lot of time, down in the garage. I thought it would be March before I finished, but looks as if I am not far off now, just  small bits to do. Re-mount the windscreen,a little bit more electrical work, a bit more trim to go on, so does any one know when the sun is coming out?
