Title: Insurance curfew?
Post by: benchmark51 on 09, June, 2016, 05:15:26 PM
Just seen this on another forum, I didn't know that :o

'Just checked my renewal, and noticed that between the hours of 10pm and 6am, if the car isn't in the garage, it's not insured
Checked other companies, and this seems to be the standard for Kit Car insurance. It would be a problem if using the Kit for holidays or overnight camping at Shows etc'

Hi Dave, just looked at mine and it's the same terms as my tin top.....if it's declared as kept in the garage at home it needs to be there unless the vehicle is temporarily away from home (i.e. I haven't permanently changed the place it's usually stored)....Ian

I saw the post on 'Locostbuilders' forum. That and the subsequent replies seems to suggest that the 'kit car' cannot be used between 10pm and 6am. All a bit strange :-X

Mine's on a classic and specialist policy....but I guess terms vary from provider to provider. The more worrying aspect is that it doesn't sound as though it's clear to the policy holder and that leads to nasty surprises!!

It's not covered for sonic bangs so I guess it won't be covered if Col goes past flat out   :)  .......Ian

It is the same on mine which I queried. As it is insured to be kept at home in a garage, should it be stolen as you have left it on the drive overnight, then you take a hit.

It does not mean you cannot drive it at anytime or if away from home it is still fully covered.

If in doubt speak with the underwriters as they will know the detail. If they are trying it on then change insurer

Fairly sure mine has that wording too but like others have said it is 'cos if you declared it was garaged you get a saving for the lower risk so its not unreasonable that they get something back if you then don't put it in the garage. On mine its still insured, they just increase the excess if it is nicked off the driveway, or within half a mile of home, after the curfew time. Its still fully insured, and the normal excess applies further afield.

Interestingly, some tin top insurance companies charges more if you declare it as garaged 'cos a large proportion of damage claims come from people scraping their cars on the garage door frame!
