Title: Queen's Square Sunday morning meet 13th December
Post by: Moleman on 24, November, 2015, 08:56:17 PM
This is a really good chance to meet up with car enthusiasts from all over Bristol. it is held on the Sunday morning from about 9am at Queen Square, Bristol, City of Bristol BS1 4QS

I know we are always immaculately behaved but I am going to ask three things.  We wish to make a positive impact on the Square and for Bristol as a whole.
(a) If you see some litter could you pick it up and put it in the bins (not ours but we will help)
(b) If somebody does make noise, very politely explain the situation to them so that the show is not banned as a result - that also applies to burning rubber and the like
(c) Invite as many members of the public as possible to enjoy this benefit for Bristol

So this is a great venue with a good atmosphere so who is up for it?

This one is getting really popular now so it is best to get there early if you can. Though we will be giving this one a little review soon so come along & see what you think?  :)

This one is on the same date as our meal so I'm guessing most won't be there that long, Unless the weather is good & you can drive from there in the kit car if you wish.  :)

I'm sorry to say there will not be a Santa Run this year as I know a lot of the regulars that do this have their cars off the road at the moment but don't let that stop you from dressing up anyway. :o ;D

This one will be a weather dependent venue due to what the weather will be like so if it is good who is up for it?

Hey Colin, I hope you are ok mate, not seen you on here as much as usual? It's been quiet without you!!

I won't be at Queens Square this week. The car is in bits and I have to take my daughter to Bath, rush to the meal then rush back to Bath to pick her up again! All those that do go need to take some pics so I can attend virtually!

Not so sure on the weather, would like to take the Cob out but might wait until Sunday morning to decide. What sort of time are people meeting at the square? I guess not quite so early in the Winter?

It's hard to tell Tony. It can still be a bit busy by 9 am even in the winter.  :o

I sadly won't be there as I went to Tax the westy for another year (I never SORN it )  8) Only to be told I don't have a MOT for it.  :o  I asked when did it run out only to be told it had ran out in August.  :o It's now booked in for Monday as too much going on tomorrow.  ::) :)

You can also check a cars MOT history, this can be very interesting!!!! Shows pass or fail, dates, mileage, advisories etc etc

Today's forecast is overcast but dry for Sunday.  I should be there but will be heading off promptly and will go to the Hunter's rest by Tintop.  Wifey is too injured at the moment to get into the Westie.

It is worth getting to Queens early parking always seems to be at a premium now.

I have posted directions on the Christmas meal thread.

Ok, it's 12.30pm Dave (had to go right back to page one on that topic to find it though!!)

Cool! Another Fury to see, at last!

There are at least 3 cafes open but I'm sure you'll spot any kits easy enough (mid way along what I think is the south side of the square(?), it runs parallel with The Grove anyway)

Well, I went and met Parkes (his first outing) and Robert.  It was good to see them (briefly)

I left early because a traffic warden appeared and was inordinately aggressive.  He made no effort at all to find any driver committing an offence but collected their numbers immediately and issued tickets.  I gave up my space to Robert but I could not believe that he was going to try to book me for "waiting" on double yellows while I put my seatbelt on - actually in the car, engine running and lights on.

I guess that is a Christmas present from Fergie.  He seems big on aggression towards motorists and is so keen on climate change that he flew to the conference with 40,000 other believers.  Behaviour today was good, parking light and generally sensible - this was just unwarranted and clearly deliberate.  Where else would you see a traffic warden on a Sunday!  >:(

I saw a number of vehicles with parking tickets, but then they were parked on the pavement, I think its time to call the square off for a while.

Good idea Colin. Could it be arranged at a venue that means we may be able to link up with (an)other kit car club(s) maybe? No idea if they would be interested but there are a few around near enough to travel and meet. Apple County, Chiltern 7s, South Wales Kit Car Club, South Wales Kit and Specialist Car Club (may be the same club I am not 100% sure on that but I love the name they have chosen), even the Southern Kit Car Club may be interested in travelling? Even sports or classic cars may want to come.

Just a thought (cheers Steve, like I am not busy enough!!!  ;D ;D ;D)

Haynes motor museum do a morning meet on the first Sunday of each month.  Usually a good mix of cars to look at plus the option of a bacon sandwich.

Sunday Queens Square

I have a suggestion, might not be to everyone's liking

Instead of parking up - we just drive round and round and round the Square, that's perfectly legal

there will be not a lot we can do about the revving of the engines, and the blowing of the horns

please don't blow horns if you are stationary ( that's an offence) only if you are actually moving

give it a few months of this and the moaners might decide it's far better if we just park up

it will be just like going for a drive

thoughts please ? --- It has to be Legal

I think wherever we tried to set up another meeting in Bristol we would get the same hassle tbh and I can't see anywhere having the 'ambience' of the square either. That was an inspired choice when it was originally made.

I have in the past thought that The Downs might be good, it's pretty much away from residential property and there is plenty of room. A bit open to the weather maybe and it doesn't have much of a class feel to it either.

I can think of one good place in town if it were just a BKCC meet but I doubt it would be big enough for the quantity of cars that attend the Queen Square meeting. I used to park up there years ago when I was cabbying. There is usually a chuck wagon there though I'm not sure about Sundays. It's the part of Parry's Lane that cuts across Durdham Down, quite wide and plenty of room for a fair few cars (more than we alone could muster)....

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51%C2%B028'40.2%22N+2%C2%B037'05.8%22W/@51.477823,-2.6204757,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0

It has to be viewed to be appreciated. It is tree-lined and there is plenty of grass area too for when the weather is dry. There are a few benches too if I recall. Not much through traffic and no nearby houses. If both sides of the road were used it could easily take 50 or more cars so would be plenty of room for the BKCC and anyone else who we wanted to attend. No cafes though as far as I know, but IF there is a chuck wagon on a Sunday then no probs as their food and hot drinks were excellent (that's why I went there!)

Have a look at the 'earth' view.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51%C2%B028'40.2%22N+2%C2%B037'05.8%22W/@51.4777192,-2.6181824,236m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0

And we could always have a group run down Saville Road, across Rockleaze and onto Circular Road for ice creams and loos if we needed them!  ;D

If you go on 'street view' you'll get a better idea of the look and feel of the road. Plenty of room to move around and chat for sure. Also big enough and on a short enough round trip 'circuit' for people to have passenger rides in each others cars to get a feel for other kits/cars!? If the club expanded it's outlook a little to maybe include classics, more sports cars and 'specialist cars' we could fill that road most weeks I reckon!

It's not Queen Square I know, but then what is? There is no other area like it in Bristol for sure :(

This is quite a good idea but it is only this week that Fergie has decided that all of the parking on durdham down deserves to be banned so I believe many more double yellas are planned.  That seems like a good cause for a people's protest to me!

Yes but I think it is only aimed at stopping commuters using the Downs as a park and ride Ian and wont be in effect on Sundays.

I think the Mayor is an idiot but he has a wonderful media team who keep him in the press and I would not be surprised if he wins again.
Who are standing against him, who would for the salary on offer? I suspect only local politicians with ideas for the future and in truth if anyone takes over they would have a hell of a problem getting rid of those who are helping him form these policies so would they make any difference?
Cars are hated by the BCC and that is overrun with Greenies who support the lunatic policies. Hence Bristol was chosen as a Green city for Europe, cycling is given a disproportionate say in planning. 20mph zones to stifle transport progress all part of the bigger plan. Yet having said all that I have lived down here for over 30 years and we still have not got a tram system and only now are they starting with the building of the dedicated bus lanes, metro? after years of wasting millions, if not billions in all that time on schemes, consultations, consultants to provide a public transport system people would want to use.
Where ever you move the meeting it would be hounded as we are not wanted, getting somewhere like Castle Combe to do something would be better and I would rather pay a small entrance fee to do that than wait for BCC to outlaw our gathering, as they do already have the power to do that using the S75 law.

I think the great thing about Queen Square meet is that is quick, you can get up early have a quick blast for breakfast and be back home in time to do other things that we all inevitably have to do on a Sunday. I think that is why it works so well. If it turned into a long drive out somewhere I think it would get less takers. Just my 5p worth...

Totally agree. Queens Square is a very convenient format: close, butties and tea available, great location, fantastic variety of attendees. Combe car park works for me though.

Or the car park at the Cross Hands, Old Sodbury/Tormarton that we use before we convoy to Combe. I'm sure the landlord would enjoy the extra food and drink business and it has toilets etc too.

Then if we wanted to we could have a run out up along any of the many roads that lead from there, something we don't get to do at Queen Square!

I thought it might be useful to know something about GF.

Fergie stood as an independent "Bristol First" candidate on 15 November 2012 and on 16 November 2012, Ferguson became Bristol's first elected mayor, beating the Labour candidate Marvin Rees by more than 6,000 votes. The election included supplementary - second preference votes.

The election saw an appallingly low turnout of just 28%.  Apathy elected him.

He is greatly supported by the Greens and people who don't normally vote and he resigned from the Liberal party go independent – you have to guess that he thought he had no chance as a Liberal.  It is now general policy that fringe groups try to bias democracy by taking advantage of low turn-outs.  There is only one answer to that and we don't have to wait long now.

I'm confused. Which good point, keeping it at Queen Square or moving to Combe? What do you define as local? Surely that depends where you live? I thought we were looking for an ADDITIONAL place to Queens, not instead of? Yes I am confused!  ???

How about having a few or more locations, visit the one local to you and/or any of the others. Can be influenced by weather and/or how much time you have. Maybe visit them all. ;D
Title: Re: Queen's Square Sunday morning meet 13th December

Until and IF Queens get shuts down I would have thought it best to keep using that one on the 2nd Sunday each month with maybe another on the 4th Sunday and use multiple venues for variety. The venue could be decided on a month by month basis with the location being announced a couple of weeks beforehand and hence also made known at the Queens meeting, it doesn't have to be one fixed venue I guess. I think places like Combe would be good expecially if there is an option to go for a convoy drive to somewhere nearby as well maybe?

There must be plenty of places, Combe, Tog Hill car park, the Cross Hands just 3 nearby this side of town. I'm sure there are loads more around the other areas of the Bristol region too, just I know this side best. Is Ashton Court open? Or Blaise Castle? Years ago I used to go to Club Lotus meets at the Compass Inn at Tormarton or the Bull at Hinton.

Or Woodlands Golf and Country Club at Bradley Stoke. Plenty of golf clubs that may welcome us if we buy food and drink?

I know there is a very car friendly pub/landlord near Bath that in the past guys from Pistonheads have used. I think it is at Box. Could meet there and run to the Cross Hands or Combe even, some nice roads along the way. Just looked it up, it's the Northey Arms and it's actually Corsham not Box as such....

I think it is clear that we are being forced out of Queen's Square and it is no accident.

We need to ask for permission to use any private car-park and they must welcome us.  It is not necessary to go to the same location each time and we could tour about to anywhere we are welcome.

Lots of good ideas are appearing - stay on the lookout over Christmas and we will then seek permissions in the New Year.

The village club at Redhill just off the A38 (- just south of the airport) would always welcome us and they do fine breakfasts.  This is a common venue for the Pegasus club.  They have parking for well over 100 - 30% on tarmac, 70% on grass.

Agreed Ian. I have heard about the meet that Pegasus do there, apparently it is pretty good. On the note of looking out and finding venues/getting permissions etc etc I plan to do a scouting run as soon as weather permits just to have a look-see (no talks to landlords unless they approach me) on this route.....

It takes in the Cross Hands, Tog Hill, the Northey Arms, Biddestone (Arms), Castle Combe and back to the Cross Hands again. All on good roads I think.

It'll be a nice little run out of about an hour just to give the Tiger a bit of fun. If anyone else wants to tag along please feel free to join in and/or suggest other points nearby or along the way  :)

Last Christmas I went out on Christmas Day, it was ace!!! Totally dead, I had all the nice quiet DRY roads all to myself near enough!!! I have never been down one main road (that I will not mention) as fast!!

If Christmas Day or Boxing Day are dry this year I will probably be out for a blast again (within the legal limits  ;D)

I'm all for getting together somewhere for brunch, Sunday morning is my only chance to have a little snooze, so an early breakfast is not for me and I suspect some others too.

A brunch might even start to attract other clubs or enthusiasts too that might like a lie in.

I like the idea of a Downs meet. If established a snack van would be more than happy to attend.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm confused. Which good point, keeping it at Queen Square or moving to Combe? What do you define as local? Surely that depends where you live? I thought we were looking for an ADDITIONAL place to Queens, not instead of? Yes I am confused!  ???

I'm saying just keep it local in Bristol so we still get quite a few that would like to turn up each month but not on the same date as Queens Square so people can still go to Queens Square if the wish.

I'm liking the idea of the Downs though.  :)

Not sure these days Dave, it's been a while since I was around that area regulary. May take a trip to find out some info on stuff like that and the Downs/parking in general. I'm sure it has changed a bit since my day.

I agree Colin, that would be ideal mate wouldn't it? Are you thinking just the BKCC, at least for the time being?

I can take a trip up there sometime and check out that bit or road mate, see if it is still viable. It's a good place even if it is only to start with. You're the boss Col, let me know if you need me to do anything to help get it off the ground.

I suppose the ideal time to do a reconnaissance trip would actually be on a Sunday morning to get a true picture of what it is likely to be like up there, ie parking restrictions if any and chuck wagons etc?

That sounds like a mission to me! Go for it!  If we could find several we could move it around - very difficult to hit a moving target!

FHO - especially for you sent by a friend:

You will see a glimpse of Hairy Santa's GT40 in motion and a rally to beat all rallies.  You will also see some familiar cars now under new management - from 2010....

Gorge-ous!

Can't blame him Dave, I feel like drinking myself today!  ???

Do you ever have much trouble starting Ratbag this time of year? My Tiger has a stupid small bike/ATV battery on it and I always have trouble starting her in cold weather. I'm not sure if it needs a new battery or just a bigger one!

A bigger one would make sense being as the couple of kilos saved with the small one must make sod all difference to her performance being as she is not exactly lightweight! A bit of a nause to have to fit a new battery cage etc and get rid of the nice old alloy one though. Maybe just a brand new replacement battery would do the job. Not sure exactly how old the current one is. A few years of having to start up a pinto engine cant have done it much good though?

I was taken out for a drink on Saturday by some mates who were visiting Bristol. Got up next morning at 9.30'ish, 2 paracetemols and back to bed! Lost my phone, couldn't find it anywhere  :'(. Bit later on I used my tablet and rang my phone, there it was ringing away in my jeans pocket in the laundry bin ;D.

No, Ratbag is on the button in any weather. A battery with a good capacity is more important than saving a couple of kilos. Let's face it no-one in BKCC, as far as I know, is doing any racing so such weight saving is pointless. If it's a road car give it what it needs to be reliable.

Is it worth getting one of those battery booster packs???

Started the Vindi the other days after about 4-5 weeks and apart from a few cranks to get the fuel through, it fired up straight away. I use an Accumate  battery conditioner on it (and the mower) and it keeps it topped up. I've got a lightweight battery and it seems happy  :)

Probably, but have heard tales of woe from those who have the cheaper ones. The more expensive ones are ok, providing you remember to keep it charged. Carrying it adds weight too, so may as well have a decent battery in the first place.

Looking back a few posts - I posted s dodgy link!

It should have been Hairy Santa leading a pretty decent rally in his GT40 in Cheddar Gorge in 2010.

So here goes!

I totally agree Dave. But she is being sold in the Spring so I think I may just fit a new battery like the one she has now. It was ok for many years and is a bit less hassle for me atm what with other crud I have going on in my life right now. The new owner will be happy enough I think.

Sadly there is no power in the garage the car is currently in, I did use a trickle charger in the previous garage though and that did help and when it was really cold and struggled I just started it with a normal battery charger attached and it flys round and started on the button. I plan to move the car to a garage with power just as soon as I have jump started it or fitted a new battery.

Great vid Ian! I have yet to go to the Gorge. It's on my list of 'must do's' for the ASBO in 2016. Just hope they still have meets there next year?

Why not try a solar charger. Commonly used on boats and motorhomes to keep the battery topped up. £10 at Maplins.

I may give that idea a go mate. I will have to figure out how to put the solar charger on the roof though as it's a group of garages and has only the front up and over door entrance. If I run the lead out of that onto the roof I can see some oik ripping it out one night just for fun. I plan to swap the Tiger and the Fury over as the Fury never goes flat and the garage it's in has power. Problem solved, for now at least. Hoping to do that this week, weather permitting.

I may be up for that Pete if we get some dry weather and I have the Tiger running by then (shouldn't be an issue I hope).

I think tomorrow is gonna be ok and then also either Boxing Day or the Sunday you are suggesting. At least that is the current forecast.

I'll keep an eye on the Points West forecast.
