Title: My Bulldog Rebuild
Post by: Pilgrim Anna on 16, September, 2012, 06:03:03 PM
Well Brian got bored and made a start on my Bulldog.

He's taken off one side off the front suspension and given it a good clean up. Who'd have known it was painted blue under all that muck and greese.  :o

This is how gruby it was

Now an empty space

Here's the clean up bits

It does say Triumph Torledo on the box and they do look similar to the ones on the Gentry. I got them off Ebay, £57. Though I just tried the compabilty chart and its says 'No' maybe contact the seller. Maybe these would be better 271121734946

New brake calipers are in and bled, though small issue in that the brake pipe going into one the conector threads were badly worn thanks to Pete I got a quick replacement and the job is done. Also fitted new tiebar bushes as the old ones had completely disintigrated.  ;D

Then sat down for the afternoon and wheeler Dealers was on restoring a Morgan +4, replacing the chassis. So feeling itchy and needing to do something else on the car, I removed the old ply dashboard that was peeling apart. It was only glued in place with Gripfil. ???

Got fed up with Annas car sat on the driveway and the Merlin taking up work space in the garage. So between me, Anna and the little un we've swapped them over.

Now I can really get started on her car, first is to strip the car down sort the few unwanted holes and cracks in the bodywork ready for spraying... then the rebuild can start.

Engine went back in last night, all cleaned up and looking nice. I've had plenty of practice in the last year of putting engines back on gearboxes thanks to Pete ;) so the job went smoothly.
(http://s7.postimage.org/inupuj9fr/20130218_200301.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/inupuj9fr/)
All thats left is to finish tidying up the bodywork before spraying, there are a few crack lines in the gel coat, but being nearly thirty years old now it's in very good condition. ;D

The starter motor had badly worn teeth though the motor works great.  >:( I got hold of a Morris Minor Starter last week only to find they have a different flange fitment  for attaching to the engine. So I thought how hard can it be to just swap the dog (the part with the teeth) over. apart from a very strong spring to compress very easy according to the haynes book. So I asked at work, in our garage workshops if they had a press that could do the job "yes we do have a press but it wouldn't be able to do that!" So my brian got thinking how can I do this?

Then I remembered I had 2 old brake drums and some threaded bar. These with a small plate made to take the tip of the starter and gave it ago.

Car looks great ... me not being an expert when it comes to spraying cars, how do you not end up with everything sprayed blue in your garage.
My limit when it comes to sparying is 'spray cans' and I seem to get that everywhere.

Wickes do a really thin and cheap dustsheet on a roll, I used it for my spraying: http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/154962 (http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/154962) and if there isn't one near you, B & Q do one too: http://www.diy.com/nav/build/building-materials/damp-proof-courses-membranes/sheets/NDC-Mega-Dust-Sheet-Roll-Clear-2m-50m-9273082?skuId=9282782 (http://www.diy.com/nav/build/building-materials/damp-proof-courses-membranes/sheets/NDC-Mega-Dust-Sheet-Roll-Clear-2m-50m-9273082?skuId=9282782)

If you use rattle cans you will only end up with a cheap finish, I have seen brush painted kits that look good but they have a thick layer of paint that is rubbed back then polished, a lot of work, but cheap.  They best result is still a compressor and airgun. Oh and practise
Title: Re: My Bulldog Rebuild
Post by: Bulldog Bri on 16, March, 2013, 08:03:30 PM
There is quuite a bit of dust spray about the garage but not to worried about it, I did cover over the 7 with a couple of old sheets as that was fairly close by.

I did try rattle cans a long time ago but found that thier spray area was quite small so would leave uneven layers of paint where you think you've covered, so got myself a small compressor and gravity fed gun.

Been working on a few things today, made up the exhaust pipe cleaned and painted up the old bumpers got the ignition working (now have spark ;D) and the side lights now working.

So here's the plea... Has anyone got an old Mini headlight hanging about in their garage gathering dust (or matching pair) they don't want. Also I'm on the look out for couple of smiths gauges 'Temp & oil pressure' Darren let me have some old gauges from his Westy and they will do till I can get hold of the more classic looking Smiths ones with the chrome bezzels.

Typical, Put this up a little early it seems. Now have a leaking rear wheel cylinder, Reversing lights have stopped working and the washers as well  ??? And who would have known that the brake lights were wired through the old rear demister circuit (which I got rid of as I thought it was  an unnecessary lot of wires that were in the way  :-X)  :'(

Title: Re: My Bulldog Rebuild
Post by: Bulldog Bri on 26, April, 2013, 08:25:18 AM
WELL, this is it. MoT today ::) 11:15 Glup!! The car should be ok BUT could be issues with the paperwork  :-X Due to the fact that it was only registered as a Marina Convertible to keep the old reg, as that's how it was done a lot of the time in the 80's before SVA's and IVA's... Plus don't know how long it was off the road before we got it and that to could cause problems as it may no longer be on the DVLA system >:(

Only one way to find out and that's to go for the MoT and see what happens. ???

Title: Re: My Bulldog Rebuild
Post by: Bulldog Bri on 27, April, 2013, 06:28:47 PM
Nope sorry guys it didn't...

3 securing nut issues (no spilt pins).... :-[ opps. Now sorted
Indicator and wiper stalks were a little loose.... Drilled through plastic ring into steering column. Sorted
1 front brake calliper was weeping.... Hopefully now sealed
A bolt on the torsion bar not fully tightened.... :-[ Tightened
And the exhaust decided to blow a bit on the way to the MoT.... ??? Welded up
+ a few advisory's

I will be taking it back down for it's retest hopefully on Monday. But the bigger problem is now the registration of the car. It still says Morris Marina on the V5 and the tester wasn't very pleased about doing a test for me, but he did as I said I would be going straight up to the DVLA after the test.  :( There I explained the problem and now have some forms to fill out (oh joy) fingers crossed we won't need to IVA the car as it's been on the road for at least 25 years pre SVA and IVA with no problems.  :-X and that's how kit cars were done (mostly back then)

Well, I've managed to tax it as well today, so Annas Bulldog is now 'ON THE ROAD'  :P

Here's hoping, a long shot I know. ::)

Has anyone got or know someone who may have, an overdrive gearbox from a 1500 Spitfire, just lying around gathering dust? Annas car with just the old 4speed box is fun to drive but once she gets to around 55mph the engine is doing silly revs for a long drive (like a classic Mini would). I have a saved search going on Ebay but all asking lot of dosh..  :(
