New road tyres for the Hood??

Had a bit of a scare couple of days ago whilst having a "spirited" drive on the byepass.

Was aproaching a roundabout a bit too fast and on hitting the breaks the front broke away leaving me with smoke pouring off the front tyres and skiding towards the stationary cars ahead......just managed to stop but a serious brown trouser moment. ::) ::)

I think i'll change them as they have plenty of tread but are a cheap make (came with the wheels) and quite old.

Any recomendations ...... don't want 888's for the road, too soft.

If R888 are a bit extreme general concensus is Toyo T1r for general road use or R1r for more track focus.  I have got the older T1s and well pleased for normal road use.

My road going 888's seem to be the dogs & have lasted me along time. They are even good in the wet. The other options could be yohamma A048-R which have abit more tread. or for more road going but still track ones the toyo proxes R1R which has more tread again. the last option which I have a set as wets (which I haven't tried yet & hope i won't have too  :)) is the toyo proxes T1R which I have been told are really good for road & track in the dry & wet. which you can get a set for £150 new.

After using 888's for two years i would say they are the ones to go for. but not in snow!  :) Sounds like the one's that may suit you are the T1R's. I have herd good things about them but haven't tried them out yet & prob only will on wet trackdays & winter time.

You came to the same conclusion as me........ just ordered a set of Proxes T1-R's, hope this will sort me out. ;)

The bloke at the tyre fitters said they were what they recommend for Caterhams and Westfields for road use.

Let you know if they help or otherwise I shall have to do something with the brake system. ::)

I've only heard good things about the T1 R. Look forward to your review.

A good set up will help too if you haven't had one done already.

Grin-a-lot

I've just fitted R888s to mine and I drove the car down to Portsmouth a couple of days ago.  So far I think they're great but its too early to determine how quickly they wear and what they're like in the rain.

I'm due to drive back up Friday and its looking damp so sure i'll find out soon enough...

Don't push it to much though!!!!   Wet roads and sevens don't work as i'm sure you know. ::)

I've 360'd mine several times coming off round-abouts in damp conditions....... :-[ :-[

Funny i was told the t1r are very good for normal road cars being more heavy, the r1r seems to be the recommended tire of choice for the lighter kit cars.
But testing is what it's all about so will be nice to hear your own thoughts on the t1r's.

HI tony

you got a habbit of spinning on the by pass, did the car end up covered up in mud this time?

I have been using 888's for 2 years now & for me they are the better option for normal road use but that doesn't mean it's the better option for everyone.  :)

Well I've run the Hood for a couple of weeks now on Toyo T1-R's and there seams a definite improvement in the handling and stopping, it also feels more comfortable as the softer tyre walls absorb more bumps than before.

I've not tried flooring the brakes hard at 70+ but I would think they would slow the car down quicker, before locking up. ;) ;)

Think ABS would help but they never had it on old Sierra's!! ::)

Overall i'm well please with them but i'll see how long they last. ::)

I was wondering how you were getting on with them. Glad they seem ok. You haven't tried them in the wet yet I gess?

No, I try to avoid driving on wet and damp roads normally as it was lethal with my old tyres and it hasn't rained lately! :o :o 8) 8)
