Mot changes

Took the Hood in for it's annual Mot yesterday, it passed thankfully but barely due to a change in Mot specs.

I was told that they should have failed it due to a ball-joint......not play in it but the rubber covering it was perished! :o

It isn't as though it was leaking grease...... just showing signs of age.

Another job to do.......'spose this applies to all gaiters and rubber coverings?

'The Gaffer'

I spoke to my MOT mechanic the other day and he said there have been lots of changes in MOT's over the last couple of years. He also said that the amount of equipment you need to perform an MOT has risen plus the cost of keeping it calibrated is so much thats it's hardly worth him offering the service any more. Crazy :(

Hi Paintman,

I guess you got what is called an "advisory" - it is not a fail but you will be told that this item will likely be a failure by next time if you don't do it.  I quite approve of it because they are preventing a failure for next year.  Perished rubber is a a likely advisory and so too would marginal tread depth on tyres.

Anyway good news - it passed.

Also the rubber gaiters keep dirt and grim out so keeping the ball joint working properly. The garage I use also commented on the rising cost of keeping testing equipment up to date.

SPAXIMUS

The cost of MOT testing equipment has risen as everything is computer linked to Vosa. It is this that is driving the costs up but at the same time as garages are allowed to discount the cost, many are cutting prices they charge. They do the MOT to find work to offset the real cost of doing a test.

I would set the price and then that would be it, no discounting allowed, the garages would make money and the customer less likely to be sold work not needed.
