So after all these years of using the Ford type 9 gearbox, we are now being told by this guy that it is a weak gearbox, Not if they are set up properly. But I guess he is a little bias as he is selling these home made plates himself.   :o :o

I'm am intrigued by this and though I am happy with my type 9 its always interesting as to what people can do to modify kits to add more modern parts. As type 9 parts get more and more scarce it gives people other options of what to use instead. I am surprised there are not more people making these sorts of items. (or maybe there are? I haven't looked to be honest.)
But for now I'm sticking with my type 9 which I'm very happy with plus there really is a shortage of room in a supersix tunnel.

Did a little research into this for my mk1 escort
Main down side is its a hydraulic clutch so no cable any more and of course, it's not got a cable for the speedo so would have to convert to an electronic speedo
If you got this any then no probs but not as cheap and easy a change as first thought

The standard Type 9 is really only good for 150 hp - maybe a bit more for road use, but above this you will need lube mods and roller bearings in the lay gear to cope with more power or prolonged track use. The conversion does look look very long in the photo - you might need to be double jointed to change gear :o

Both the type 9 and this are compromised in a light car. First gear is almost useless, but compared with my BGH box you could probably set off in second and the gearing would not be far out on the Mazda box.

Having read elsewhere that the position of the gear stick is around the same as a Type 9 with the extension bit on most 7 owners use.

The price is the best bit if staring out a fresh but not worth converting in my mind.

I found the thought interesting but it is such a low ratio box that the speed in each gear is way down.  You would need a much lower ratio diff than the standard 3.92.  You will see that the 6th gear matches 5th but first gear would be at rev limit at under 30 compared to the current 40 in first gear.

   Type9   RX8
1st   2.66          3.76
2nd   1.75          2.269
3rd   1.26          1.645
4th   1.1          1.187
5th   0.84          1
6th             0.843

The diff needs to drop from 3.92 to about 2.6 to get the overall ratio about right.  So its is not going to work.

Ian
