It turned out to be a doddle.  It wasn't until I was being loaded onto the recovery truck as 21:45 that it occurred to me what it might be and then it was a complete tease to have to wait until Monday evening to test the theory.  I was right - it was just a spark-plug that had blwn itself out.  The ford zetec sparkplugs are different - they have a conical seat rather than a crush washer so if they are slightly loose, escaping gas with unscrew them and pop then out!  I have never seen that before so anybody with a zetec be warned!
