Support for the Avenue club please

At Queens Square we were approached by the founder of the Avenue Drivers club.  We need to give him our support.

The Avenue club was formed in 2009 the same year as this club and since the first event it has given great pleasure to many thousands of people.  Not enough of the general public know about this yet and they are always amazed to happen on this spectacular show when walking though the Square.  While well known among petrolheads and its supporters we need more of the public to attend this very special event.  This fits in well with Bristol as a City of Culture and rivals many similar events around the World. 

Inevitably there has always been a risk that somebody might wish to complain and that has happened with a few few residents caused to express discontent.  It would be nicer if we can all get along and for them to see the benefit of a good and well behaved event that gives joy to thousands.  So far the event has not been fairly represented to Bristol City Council and this needs to be redressed.  We all owe a debt to the Avenue club to offer our support and we do need all of us to tackle anybody who does not follow good behaviour.  And that means being noisy: engine revving, acceleration and very rarely being personally loud.  In 12 months I think I have only witnessed about three twattish events but we do need to control people who get carried away or we will all be banned.  Among the complaints is one that cars have been inside the wooden fence.  That is clearly not true because there is no access except for council vehicles with a key.

So here is what we can do:

1 Join the Avenue club - its free and offer you support go to www.avenuedriversclub.co.uk
2 Tell people who are being a potential nuisance that they need to be a little more thoughtful
3 Ask people who over- use the loud pedal politely to cool it please
4 Drive very carefully in and out
5 Pick up litter and put it in the bins - most of it is from yahoos on Friday nights but we can all do our bit for the locals
6 If the Avenue Drivers Club calls for help we need to support and seek the other clubs to support as well.  So if you are a member of another auto club please pass on this message

This will be a hard one if the council is genuinely getting flack from residents. The Mayor and many of his officials are avowed anti car, the Mayor rides a bike and has said he wants to return the streets to the people and is considering making every Sunday car free days, as they trialled last year. So complaints would be a good excuse for them.

All we can do is try to support it but unfortunately the anti car brigade are very well organised in getting their way so we need to be much better to level the playing field.

From what I understand this has come from the residents and Bristol City council would need to investigate fairly any complaint.  Just rarely somebody on the Square does something that could give cause so we need to make sure our behaviour is immaculate and Bristol is proud of us.  One thing that is a very good feature is the regular attendance by the Police who are very helpful and courteous about any inconsiderate behaviour and they really embrace the event too.

It may be an idea that the Avenue club create and print leaflets detailing good practice for distribution to all attending the venue. Uneccesary for most I'm sure but educating the odd few wouldn't hurt.
Beside it would be a good show for any complainers.

I wonder if this could be swung round to a really positive story for Bristol as European Green Capital. What if all the local dealers who sell green vehicles could organize a show of new technology/next generation green vehicles and attend one Sunday with a display of electric cars, hybrids, PHEVs, fuel cell etc. maybe even get some attendance from electric racing vehicles such as the TT Formula Zero? I'm sure most of the petrol heads who attend this event are realistic enough about the finite nature of oil based fuels to take low carbon technology seriously and possibly mature/wealthy enough to make good potential customers for any attending dealers. With the right management of the press this could make a really good feel-good story and a few pictures of lovely cars will always look good in the papers. Who knows, we might even make a friend out of Mr Red Trousers!

When you think about it kit cars are actually quite green - they often breath new life into parts from old vehicles thus saving them from the scrap yard. They tend to get their high performance from light weight rather than massive power. Owning a kit car is a great antidote to having a less exciting daily driver so, based on my own example, I'm able to accept driving a Prius every day due to knowing I have a kit car for the weekend. If I didn't have the kit car I probably would have opted for something much less fuel efficient as my main car and given that the Prius does around 25-30k miles a year and the kit car one tenth of that the net effect is a reduction in my carbon footprint!

Like it. Be a great summer event but would need cooperation from the council to open up more space. Could be well worth perseverance though.

After this mornings event, I starting to feel this one has run is course. With more Tin tops with bolt on engine bits turning up with more irresponsible owners. Engine revving.

If you look on Facebook a second page has been set up called the Queens Square Breakfast Club and the ADC page has gone very quite. The breakfast club main pic is just a Cosworth Escort, which to me sums up the level of owner they are aiming for (hot hatches and boy racers) Not what the ADC was started for.

Think I'm not going to bother to much more with this one so much. A shame as it used to be a well mannered event without the idiots.

I agree. Lots seem to think that the writing is well and truly on the wall for this one. What was once a nice spot in the centre of Bristol has become a bit of an eyesore. Whatever events are being held there right now are ruining it. The nice pretty square it once was is looking like the back end of a fairground

As far as the car events are concerned, it is now far too small to cope and I think everyone is just waiting for the inevitable closure. With the idiots 'impressing' everyone with how they can press a gas pedal and make tyres squeal, that will come even quicker.

I doubt that anywhere 'in town' would be any better, so maybe out of town would suit? The motorway service area by the Severn bridge? I have heard that Cheddar is getting fed up with the idiots showing off and spoiling the area as well.

It runs on the forth Sunday of the month and is almost sure not to be supported by modifiers.  They also have Kit car themes.

It's a shame but I believe the meets down there are numbered and I don't think there is anything that can be done to rectify the problems - no one will listen

Only way I can see it working is for the original car club to hire the whole of queens square for a nominal £1 for the morning and have marshals to control what is happening, ban people for 3 months for engine revving, ect, might work. some form of control is def needed

I didn't go today but I'm guessing a lot of classic cars didn't go due to the weather so it got filled will normal cars just tarted up? 

It is getting busy but it always does over the summer. I am open to doing something different but I will need Ideas as to where?

Wilton wake up looks good for a one off but not a regular thing. I will start a new thread to see what you think.
