Grin-a-lot

Unfortunately the time has come to sell my Westy; I've put a lot of effort (and time and money!) to fixing all the niggles with this and now its working perfectly its time to say goodbye!

Engine:  Ford crossflow 1740cc with Kent 234 cam and twin Webber 40 carbs.
Ignition:  Electronic Accuspark Ignition
Gearbox:  5 Speed Type 9 'box with quickshift kit for a shorter lever throw.
Geometry:  Sset for Fast Road/Track
Peak Power: 127bhp at 6,444rpm
Peak Torque: 115lbft at 4,552rpm
Wheels:  Toyo R888 Medium compound on minilite wheels.
History:  A folder full of receipts (including the original purchase receipt) and data on the car.

Also included: Exhaust muffler, original glass windscreen, doors, roof, wipers, washer jets, spare wheel and carrying rack.

Engine: Ford crossflow over-bored to 1740cc by Vulcan Engineering.  Fitted with a Kent 234 fast road cam and twin Webber 40 carbs.  Its fitted with Accuspark electronic ignition to deliver a more consistent spark and when I moved from traditional points to this you could hear (and feel) the difference and idle and high revs.

The engine/car has been on the rolling road and the graph below shows its delivering the sort of power you'd expect.  I've been doing more work since this (including cleaning the carb internals and replacing all the seals/gaskets) so I reckon its delivering a little more power – perhaps 130bhp – either way its a nice smooth curve for power and torque.

The engine had a new starter motor over winter 2015 and is fitted with a secured and vented oil catch tank.  I've also installed a thermostatically controlled oil cooling system so it keeps the temperature down.  The car holds its temperature really well and its only in traffic it gets warm.  The fan is an auto cut in/out with manual control as well but nothing beats the flow of air over the car for cooling.  The exhaust silencer is a thing of beauty.  Its made of stainless and sounds lovely!

Gearbox:  The 4 speed 'box was replaced with a 5 speed.  This was primarily because the engine was running out of legs at the higher speeds and even at motorway speeds the additional gear has been great.

Electrics:  I have completely rewired the car with a blade fuse holder, an isolating switch for safety and new switches throughout.  The switches illuminate in blue when the lights are operated although you can rewire them so that they illuminate when the switch is pressed.  The fuel gauge has stopped working since I last drove it and it goes to full scale deflection so I think its an earth fault in the gearbox tunnel.  Equally the speedo electronic and where the sensor is mounted on the chassis it stops working with a passenger as the gap between the sensor and the bolt on the diff flange becomes too large!  The car also has a programmable rev indicator above the dashboard and in line with the steering wheel.  I have it set to 5200 rpm so effectively short-shifting to save the engine to much hassle!

Bodywork:  I replaced the window, door and roof bits with an aeroscreen – personally I think its loads better and looks smarter but I know its not to everyone's taste so all of the window, door, wiper and roof "bits" will all be sold with the car as well.  As a result there are some holes in the bodywork from the window fittings.  I've been happy enough to live with this and equally I don't have the ability to make these sorts of repairs.  There are small areas of spidering and damage but nothing structural - this is probably the worst of it (I didn't do it)!

Cockpit:  The dash is a carbon effect GRP dashboard with complete site of gauges.  i'm 6ft tall so to make more room I fitted JK Composite seats to push me as far back and as low as possible.  A 4 point harness holds you in place and there is black carpet throughout.

Geometry.  I have the car professionally set-up by a specialist (thank's Dave) so I know it weighs 550kg with half a tank of fuel and no driver.  Additionally I have the geometry set up to accommodate a 92kg driver and its tailored for road/track.  This means it doesn't tramline on the road as much as an out-and-out track car but still has stacks of grip in the corners.  My logic was that adding more power was going to be costly so I wanted a geometry that would best help me carry speed in corners and give great handling.

Summary:  This car has done about 10 trackdays in the last 5 years that i've owned it and its pretty quick.  I don't take it out in the rain or wet but when I get caught I give the car a thorough clean and dry.

This car has enough power to have fun (and sometime scare yourself) and I think this will make an excellent car for someone starting out in the kitcar world.  The Westfield name means and this rare engine tuned by a highly regarded company means that the car will hardly depreciate and the crossflow engine remains one the best sounding engines around.  Its easy to work on as there's no computer control and the chassis is in a great condition should you want to swap the engine for something more exotic.

This car will give you a summer of fun and a winter hobby as well!  I'm happy to take prospective buyers out for a test ride although i'll be doing the driving unless you can demonstrate at least 3rd party insurance that extends to test drives of cars like this and you've got some experience in these sorts of things!

Whilst this car needs some cosmetic TLC, its got a well regarded engine tuned by a well regarded specialist.  Cars with much lesser engines and without the collection of additional "stuff" are selling for more than this so i'd like to think it represents a good deal!

I would be interested as a possible export to Aus.  What year is on the V5?

Cheers Adrian

Grin-a-lot

Adrian,

The V5 shows it registered 1 May 1990.  The car is a 1988 model with chassis number 88WSE015.

If you want anymore information then please ask!

Darren,

Thanks for the info.  The anal Federal Govt in Canberra requires proof that the car build date is prior to 1 Jan 89 before allowing a classic (only way to do it) import approval.  The V5 1st rego date will not help us.  Is there any way of validating (with documentation) the build date?

Cheers Adrian

Adrian,

The only thing I can offer is the Westfield headed paperwork which covers correspondance and purchase all dated during 1988 so you can prove the car was bought and that the build commenced in 1988 but all the registration paperwork shows 1990 i'm afraid.

Good luck with the sale Darren, stay in touch with us wont you :'(.

Cant wait for another tour of that fantastic ship of yours one day 8)

Cheers Colin and Phil, it's a shame but I'm just not using it like I should be and it deserves to go to a good home.

I'm sure I'll appear at Castle Combe and the Riverside, I'll be keeping my crash helmet and will certainly be on the scrounge for passenger rides!

I've achieved so much on the car thanks to help from various club members - I'll be back in a kitcar eventually!

Moleman

No worries mate. You will be most welcome to jump in mine for a passenger ride.  8)

Hi Darren - for the sake of $50, I'm happy to submit an Import Application to Canberra.  It takes approx. a month so if the car sells in the meantime then so be it.  Would you be prepared to scan and email the Westfield headed paper docs to me so I can attach them to the application?  I would also need a copy of the rego doct (despite it saying 1990).

Cheers Adrian

Darren,

Sorry to hear it is going but I am sure as soon as it is gone the urge will reappear!  Good luck with the sale and keep in touch with us all.  Whenever you want there is a passenger seat if you need some nostalgia or  some track time.

Regards
Ian

Adrian, i'll scan the documents in this weekend and send them over, if you could let me know the best email address to use then that'd be good.

Ian - thanks for the offer, i'm not sure where i'll get my need-for-speed satisfied unless I pop along to the odd trackday!

Iancider

So that's a deal then

Next rides available - June 20th and August 17th! - loads of available seats!

Well done Darren.

Maybe new owner could pick up one of the spare tickets and get on our stand?
