hi,

is anybody interested in a track day at Combe on Fri. 8th Oct. courtesy of trig at Turbosport?

He's organised several there in the last couple of years and was invited back by the circuit because he brings along such a nice bunch of drivers.

Most of you might know that Combe run dead strict noise regs and dead strict black flag rules - all I can say is that there haven't even been any `chats' with the tower let alone a `that's enough fella, goodbye'.  That's why they like him, i.e. no showboaters.

There's ten places left if you fancy a day off work.

trig also organises camping at the circuit the night before if you've got to travel a bit of a way.

It'll mostly be Escorts, Capri's, etc, but given my experience last Saturday you guys don't need to worry about being too slow :D

pm me if you're interested

Bernie

ps I won't be there in my oil-laying Escort, so all the corners will be safe this time - it's the everyday Skoda instead.

YZFMINI

It should be a good one as iv herd about it for the past few years from bernih.
Hence im going..

What's the cost going to be?  Might just be tempted, passed the noise test at 98.2dB today!

Wear do you get your car tested for noise levels......often wandered. ;D

£125, but less if we get enough cars there.

Just call the circuit up during the week and ask if any of the sound check boys are around, normally they are happy to check free of charge if they are there.

I might be up for this track day.

We'll have to get together and pop over some time.....on hols. next week thou.

That would be good.  Could you let me know in the next day or two please to confirm numbers.

Do it Phill
You wont get a full day trackday this cheap at castle combe often. it normaly about 150 for half day..

bernih

c'mon guys,

we're not talking about a drift queen mad day here - trig only lets 40 cars max to make sure it's not too busy.

compared to 10 cars at a time on Llandow this is like driving in a desert - wondering where everyone else is so you can really enjoy yourself without having to look in the mirrors all the time.

Seriously, I dont think that would be a problem. I'm sure there would be a few people you could trust to keep an eye on them. (I wouldent mind for one)

Hopefully we may see you Tony :)

In that case, I'll talk to Hannah and Jamie tonight and see if they fancy a trip to Combe on the 8th.

I'll give you an answer either way once I've got my fuel pump and ignition coil fitted and whether that fixes the problem or not.

thanks for the guys who've signed up - just hope for better weather than yesterday >:(.

If anyone else is still interested they can get an entry BUT it will be at full price i.e. £150 not £125. :(

Bernie

Grin-a-lot

Probably not going to be on track but if the weather's good I will bring a camera and zoom lens so should be able to get some exciting action photos of you guys charging around the place!

robp

I'll be there Friday.  Unfortunately, couldn't get the morning off work so PM only for me.  Look forward to seeing all the motors.

Daley Down Under

I'll be there too but no Marlboro Car as I cant get us all in so TinTop for me

mattsmev

Can't make it for the track day, but i'll pop in on my way home from work to see how you are all getting on

Cheers

- if you wanted to bring Marlborocar then I could probably take a passenger, I'm down in coalpit heath and I'll be popping along as a spectator for a few hours.

Just drop me a line if want to try and sort something.

bernih

thanks for the support guys,

it looks like there will be about thirty cars and so far the weather looks good :-\ - so loads of quality track time.

I haven't fixed my Escort since it laid a slick at Llandow a couple of weeks ago - just part of the development challenge to make an old car keep up with the new stuff.

if anyone's got an instant cure for engine vibrations shaking all the ancillaries off please let me know.  I've been through my fair share but at LLandow it was the oil cooler takeoff that came loose and spat the O-ring out :o

So it's the road car for Friday

see you there

Bernie

Great day at Castle Combe, sun was out and thanks to all for "encouraging" me to get out on track.  Apart from getting a bit stormy on what turned out to be my final lap, the car was pretty good and I had a great time.  Still smiling now so living up to my forum name!

Glad you had a good time Mr Grin, nice to see you out on the track. Nice pics too.

I had a great time also, completely knackered now though.

Good BKCC turn out

Shame about this horrific accident. RIP Colin ;) And Pete, dont worry mate you'll soon get over the shock.

Actually Colin's rear exhaust came off on track, he did a fantastic repair - The picture just dosent do it justice  :))

Can anyone guess what Dave H is doing here?? Clue.. it stinks and is loud ;D

Mission control, I've been caught red handed.

I'm not jealous of missing out on this track day.
Not at all.
Not one bit.
I was glad I was working instead.
I'm not crying!!
Honest

I was pretty late getting there but worth it.  Good to see everyone and have a blast around the circuit.  Great fun!

Friday was a great day. We were so lucky with the weather, it felt like summer again and it was good to see so many of us there, on and off the track.

There was a lot of development work going on in the car park which included taking body parts off to get better cooling to taking an angle grinder to my nose cone for the same reason. I'm not sure how i'm going to make it more permanent yet. Colin built another exhaust for his mini and there was some guy rebuilding his cossy in the corner. He had ALL the tools. Thanks to all for the help and gaffer tape supplies!

I tried out a set of slicks for the first time. Couldn't believe how much better the grip was AFTER they had warmed up. Quite amazing. They were pretty slippery before they warmed up so it took a couple of laps before they could be pushed. However, they seemed to go off a little after a couple of sessions and became no better than my AO48s so I'm wondering if this is due to the previous owners having put them through a few too many heat cycles before I got them or???
I could have the tyre pressures wrong but I kept them fairly low.

A little research would be interesting here. I understand from Mr Bence that some slicks are past their best after a couple of heat cycles which is how we get hold of them with so much wear left. Its impossible to tell the history of my slicks though... I'm the 3rd owner at least. The last owner was known to put his foot down a bit.

All that said, the car handled amazingly well when they were working properly, the turn in was great, the oversteer was fast but fun and I found I could take the car to the outside of the track knowing it would stay on the black stuff.

A big well done to Phil who probably had double the track time I did, his car was rarely off the track. The Riot was flawless and the driver should be proud. Thats a turn key car if ever I saw one.

The following vid is from the afternoon when the sun came out and I went looking for Phil to film him having some fun.

Daley Down Under

Dave,

Good vid - plenty of clear laps at the beginning and great coverage following Phil.  See what you mean about the slicks - I dont remember that sort of performance (although I wasn't putting as much power through them as you).  Perhaps you have a got a dodgy batch - time to call Sticky Slicks for another 4.

Times: Dave - dead consistent at 1:16.5-1:17.9 (over 5 laps inc traffic), Phil - 1:30.9 (spot on for first Combe outing).

Adrian

David H

Sticky slicks.. I'm on it. The session I had when I first went out on the slicks was amazing. I turned the camera off instead of on though.... idiot. But they went dead quick.

I'll try another set and see how it goes.

Fair play Phill!!!

hey,

I'm glad you guys enjoyed the day.  Let's not forget trig from Turbosport for organising it.

It was the first track day I've done in my Skoda, and although it's quick it's sort of uninvolving - quiet, smooth, etc. :-\  Got to get the Escort fixed.

The next one from Turbosport will likely be next spring so I'll keep you posted.

Dave, is this another Westie or your Yellow one with a new paint job?
