I hate indicators

Right here goes
My indicators were always playing up a little bit since I had it but after a few new crimps, flasher units and indicator stalk I seemed to fix it
Yesterday they started playing up again grr
After getting new flasher units both left and right work when the car isn't running but then I start her up and only the right one works, left just causes the flasher unit to tick loudly
All bulbs work fine but the hazard switch doesn't get all the lights to work any more
Any ideas? Dodgy earth?

CC Cyclone

Might be a long shot but I had a right PITA trying to get indicators and hazards all working together in one go in a car a while back. I had intermittent indicators / hazards etc In the end I replaced the (brand new) switch and all worked in the end. Might be worth a shot if you are stuck?

danwilko

I am looking at changing the hazard switch but even eBay doesn't seem to have the one I need, closest one is with round prongs at the back, not suitable for spade connectors
I'll get a pic tomorrow

I had this issue with my car years ago, it turned out to be a dodgy earth. Good luck! :)

danwilko

I started looking for the earths today, cleaned up one, but checked the bulb holders and one at back broke when I took out the bulb
So on order:
New hazard switch
New indicator units
More fuses :)

Must be something to do with the left hand side as right hand side works fine

Moleman

Hope you get it sorted soon Dan.  :)

Dan,

It does sound like an earth problem.  With the ignition off an earth path is being found via another filament - usually the brake light.  With the ignition on, the path that was at near earth potential is being raised to a higher voltage and the earth has in effect been removed.

I found a very diagram and explanation - see below

Good luck
Ian

'The Gaffer'

I'd go with Ian on this one. Bad earths are very common.

danwilko

Seems I've fixed them :)
Fitted new hazard switch and new indicator units, ran a new earth to them then tested with +ve of battery to prove, all good but then still just ticking from flasher unit, unplugged front unit, back one worked but not flashed, did the other one, and same thing then plugged both back in and they worked
Strange eh!
Hopefully fixed now though

Moleman

I guess it was one of those turn it off then back on again scenarios.  ::) :)

YellaBelly

I've had dodgy indicator faults before that turned out to be simply a 'below par' bulb! Changing the perfectly working bulb for another one has cured the fault. Worth a try should the fault return ;)

Sod the indicators! Use good old fashioned hand signals, remember them?
Mind you, the ones used nowadays usually only involve one or two fingers. :o ;D

Since you started this one, The indicators on my 7 were fine when I re-started work on it but now just stay on! No flash  :'(

All I can see is the front indicators have all but melted the orange lenses with the bulbs being permanently on! Wondering if the flasher unit/relay has gone wrong leaving the lights continually on! :(

Reckon so - the relay contact inside can sometime weld-up and keep the lights on.

Bulldog Bri

Better order a new one after Stoneleigh then. Cheers ::)

Moleman

It's a Hella make with TBB 42 on the top a pin set-up similar to a headlight bulb and a 4th un-used. But I guess as long as the plug fits it should work. :-)

If I come tonight with my heater switch and a pic of my new hazard switch can anyone try and get me a matching one as I can't make stoneleigh

Moleman

I've only just seen this mate. I will try for you if you want to pop it around my house?
