e-bay hacked - change you password!

Breaking news today,

This is genuine - not a spoof! E-bay has been hacked and password database has been stolen.  Ebay recommends that you change your password immediately and make it complex with change of case, numbers and special characters.  I would also recommend that while you are in your settings that you should un-link the account from PAYPAL (if you have it linked) and then go to Paypal and change that password as well.  If you do not do this the hacker can use your account to purchase anything at your cost.  Take note of when you changed in case anything untoward happens.  I would also recommend that you change again in a few weeks in case Ebay has not overcome the intruder attack.

If you struggle PM me and I will help you through it.

Regards
Ian

We had a similar problem with ours a while back somebody hacked ours and used it to place a fictitious advert to get peoples info and then use that to purchase other items.
We got shut down made to feel like criminals by e bay and got fined.
Worth checking your accounts  >:(  >:(

Looks like everyone is doing it at the moment as it keeps crashing & telling you to do it later.

Cheers for the heads up,
This was the first I'd heard of it, I somehow missed all the news on the BBC etc about it

But all changed now

Thats why I haven't attempted it yet. As far as I know you need to unlink from paypal first, change p'words on both then re-link?

It's all very well rushing to change you password on EBay.  Unless EBay have sorted out their security loopholes then the hackers can go straight back in a get your new password.

I'm slightly annoyed that EBay have not bothered contacting me directly and the only reason I know about this problem was the news plus Ian's post.

...also, I don't undertstand the Paypal link thing.  Paypal is still secure.  I always need to enter my Paypal password separately for each transaction.  Have I missed something?

Bulldog Bri

You are able to link your Ebay account with your PayPal account, so that when you make a purchase, you don't have to go through the signing in to PayPal, it's all done with one click ;D

Yes, I understand that bit.  Mine is linked.  It is just you need to still authenticate with Paypal (password).

(unless there is a 'One click' feature I don't know about!  ::))

Bulldog Bri

If you've linked then all you do at the checkout is to click the 'Pay' button. So if anyone has your Ebay details then they can buy what they want with your PayPal. :(

You should be fine like me Rob, I havbe to put in a separate password once I go to the PayPal page so they are not linked by the logon to eBay.

Robert

You can link pay pal, with your mobile phone, when you go to pay it will ask for a number, this will get sent to your phone, by text you will have 5 minuets to put in the 6 dig number there will be the cost of the text. about 10p
No one can use your pay pal with out your phone
