Sick Hood

Can't really complain after nearly 5 years of trouble free fun but the old Hood is dead or dying anyway!

Was all set to go to the Bath Show on Sunday but never got more than a couple of miles before it nearly cooked itself and started missing badly.

Restarted it and disappeared in a cloud of blue smoke, opps......, too many revs too often me thinks.

Limped back home with the temperature on max.....low oil pressure, missing and a over hot engine accompanied by blue
smoke.....not good.

Took out the plugs expecting to find a wet or oily one but all looked fine......

Anyway, I was planning to spend a bit of money on the engine this Winter so I contacted J.B. Racing and told then to rebuild
it and do a few modifications at the same time.......better start saving!!! ::)

Sorry to hear this mate. I know what it is like. If you ever need to borrow an engine hoist or need me to transport the hood anywhere then let me know.  :(

There's a 2.0 Pinto in there at present Pete, would love a Zetec in it but don't want all the hassle that goes with it.

Going to get the old engine rebuilt and modified a bit I think.

So you are not tempted by a smoother more reliable, revvy engine that will cost BRAND-NEW no more than a re-build?  Not tempted by and extra 20 bhp?  Or better fuel economy at the same time.

Pre-flashed ECU's are not difficult and they are under £800 and required less then £200 of sensors.  And then of course you might be tempted by THROTTLE BODIES for about the same price as the engine for yet another 20bhp.

Hmmmm....

Would you like a ride?

paintman

I recon a rebuild with fast road cam and twin 40's would give about the same as a Zetec without all the re-plumbing and
electric issues......... I agree it would not be so good on fuel consumption thou.

Have to see what the problems are first I suppose....

Could put in a Cossie I suppose if I could find a cheap one. :P

'The Gaffer'

Sorry to hear of you engine probs mate. Have to agree with Ian, Zetec for smoothness and refinement.

Good luck whatever you decide.

I'm still undecided about engines too.

Ratbag is quite fun but not quick with a 1300 xflow. I have a 205 pinto, short sump, twin dellortos,4-1 s/s exhaust ready to go. Also have a 1600 zetec escort that is complete and running well. Ratbag already has a type 9 fitted so haven't got a lot  to source to make the change. Just can't make my mind up. I have never been in a seven with a pinto or a zetec, just xflows and lotus t/c.

fletch_306

My Tiger is sick as well the oil pump has all but had it and there are more fluids on the ground from leaky seals, gaskets and radiator. have decided to take it off the road and strip back to the chassis to sort all manor of other electrical and mechanical issues as well so will most likely be living in the garage until about this time next year.  :( gonna lift the engine and decide on if i have just the right amount of cash for a zetec but that wont be until January at the earliest.  :'(

paintman

I love the noise the old Pinto makes......made ::), all the popping and roughness.

Wouldn't be the same if it was silky smooth.....be even better with a high lift cam! ::) ;D

Moleman

Sorry to hear you also have problems with your engine as well fletch_3 06 hope you get yours sorted too mate.

I can definitely recommend a duratec with cosworth running gear.  8)

That's good of you Chris, give me an idea of what to expect. Ratbags laid up til new gaskets arrive( mon or tues). Let me know when your free and we'll have a go. Tintop zetec is quicker than ratbag and more economical too. Would mean getting another run around though.

You've also never been in a 2.0 Pinto.....can't see a "tin-top Zetec" pulling 90mph in third somehow.  (on a private road off coarse!!" ;D

90mph in 3rd ? Why?

My point was 1026Kg tintop's zetec engine in 630Kg Ratbag coupled with better mpg is a good option.
2 litre pinto with twin 40's is also a good option but at what fuel economy.

Your right never been in a pinto seven, but had a mk1 escort 2 litre, 40's and hairy cam. Went well but with 11 mpg. Need to have a balance here.

Was doing 60mph actually Ian when I had my mishap but it should go a bit better on 40's.

It's only got a twin choke Weber Dgav on there at present which returns 35mph on a run out and about 25mph if driven enthusiastically.

The fuel consumption is a factor to be considered certainly.

Moleman

For what I like using mine for, Sod fuel consumption! Give me lots of horses all the way!  :P

Exactly!!!!!!

What's the point of getting a light weight kit car if your going to poodle around watching your fuel gauge and the rev counter...... your be happier in an old classic sports car and a flat cap. ::)

The Hoods at Jb Racing at present being stripped.....waiting for a phone call when the head comes off.....

Well apparently the point is so you can blow your engine up. :D Maybe you'd be happier with a bus pass

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?     I haven't got a bus pass Ian, your have to let us all know how they work and how much

you can save with one!!! ;D ;D
