New Build and IVA Question

Hi all.  Well our build has moved into the physical realm at last.  We're building a car of our own design and I just wanted to ask a quick question about the IVA.

We're looking if possible to register the vehicle as new so we're looking not to go wrong from the beginning. .... fingers crossed. ..

We've just got a second hand elise chassis which will be the basis of the build design.  We've also got a second hand Audi RS4 engine that gives us around 417bhp.

Now given we are looking for a new Reg once we have established how the elise chassis will work we can either purchase a new one and switch into the build our build our own carbon fibre tub that the elise parts will fit to. Both options are thus new. ....

For the engine we are going to have it professionally refurbished so as long as it's certified refurbished I understand that it is effectively counted as new.

Now for the other parts we intend to use elise parts for the front end.  For the rear we will have to extend the chassis.  We've seen this done for v10s so we anticipate being able to do this for the rs4 v8 with some additional side strengthening. We have a rs4 gearbox and are thinking possibly using a complete porsche rear suspension setup as a complete unit with anti-roll bar etc. The question is aside from the logistics of doing it is, the gearbox won't be new or refurbished due to cost.  The suspension set up too won't be new.  However, if we get the rear suspension unit refurbished and new shocks, mounts etc does it constitute a new part like a refurbished engine? I'm going to inquire in the official channels but I thought I'd ask here first.

Also any one with any experience in getting a new car registered but with using some 2nd hand parts for smaller things mechanical?

Any advice always welcomed.

Tim

Very expensive donor parts you are using. This car will be very exclusive me thinks, certainly not one for the masses. Would it be commercially viable?

This one will be our pride and joy.  After a few beers in the pub last night we agreed it would be hard to sell it so commercial viability lost out to having some fun.....

With the IVA system and registering the car, they are 2 separate parts to getting your car on the road.

The IVA is to make sure it's safe :) and meet all necessary EU requirements >:(

The Registering part is done once you've passed the IVA and gives your car an identiy ::)

To get a new reg on a car you'll need to prove that about 90% (I think) of the car is new (re-manufactured) not second hand, in the case of a used chassis you'll more likely get an age related plate as long as the rest is all from the same car, as they work on a points system, 1 point for each major mechanical part from one car and 5 for a new chassis (with receipt) if you score over 8 then you'll get age related, (I scored 5 with all my parts but as I couldn't find the receipts for the chassis I've been issued a 'Q')

Main rule... 'Keep your receipts for everything you buy' ;D And take loads of photo's to prove you built it.

Thanks Brian.  Much appreciated that clears up a lot.  I think we will need to prove that things are reconditioned as much as we can with lots of receipts and photos.

Cheers.
