Had a great MG V8 ride today...

'The Gaffer'

As per title, went for a ride with Dave H to Castle Coombe circuit today to get a sound test done on on the MG V8. It failed misserably at 103db, we tried an extention muffler like mine from Merlin Motorsport and it was even louder at 104db :o

Seems the exhaust system need's some work, but V8's are very hard beasts to tame sound wise. What I thought was a little unfair is that they take a reading at 4500rpm, witch may be ok for a smaller 4 cylinder cars, but thats just 750rpm from the red line in the MG >:(.

Anyway I took a couple of video's on my phone from the passenger seat, shame you cant really hear the exhast that well, but it does sound nice and the car felt fantastic for its 42 years young :) Loved it.

Cheers Phil, but it seems like after talking to the sound test guys that the existing system is knackered. Apparently it is quite common for levels to go up after fitting an extention if the original system is kaput.

Dave is looking into a custom fitting job and will no doubt tell us all about it when or if its done soon.

Bri, the car really does have a character, its been a long time since I've felt that man and machine feeling with a car. Especially when a very wet warm shoe tells you that work is needed on the water system ;D Technology has moved on far too fast.

Cheers Phil, i'm afraid its beyond that. Turns out the exhaust was custom made and welded in the days when we didn't have sound limits imposed so much. I'm gonna look into a few ideas for another day. I've got a track day booked at keevil for tomorrow and no car to drive now  :(

It probably doesn't sound like it needs it from the vid but the top half is going to be rebuilt which should enable me to give it some proper beans. The gearbox makes a nice whine as a straight cut should.

Its overheating a little so a couple of head gaskets are probably in order and its only firing on 6 until higher in the revs. The answer is just to keep the revs up I guess!

It is a wonderful experience driving around in a 60s sports car. Its hard work and handles nothing like my other car but still much better than a standard MGB. I must say I've never been a huge fan of MGBs although I learnt to drive in a BGT when I was 13. This car has me quite smitten. I feel very British in it!

The car is probably going to be a long term project that will end up very different from todays beast. I have plans for it but there's no rushing on this one.

Its not bad. The body has almost zero rust which is why we got it. Mechanically sound apart from engine bits and the fact that its 42 years old. It needs some love on the paint for perfection but thats not what its about at the mo. Thanks mate.

You've got the new front wings on there. Looks in super condition.
I had my old MG discs drilled out, for looks really, didn't make any noticeable difference though.
Look forward to seeing it one day.

You will know more about this car than me! i had no idea about the wings being new style but they are fibreglass wings for weight loss, i would imagine

The wings in metal were always quite heavy, the bonnet as well.

The old wings weren't re-made to my knowledge so all repairs and moulds are the newer ones, very subtle difference and few around with the original wings on these days.

Does look a lovely car, half fancy my old one back but getting used to all this injection stuff.
