Help!

Engine runs now, but no idea at what speed! Tacho not working :(

It's a VDO with +ve, -ve and ~ connections. I connected the ~ to the points side of the coil as I thought that's how they are wired but nothing happening at the guage end.

Any ideas guys?

Not sure if this will be any help but I wired my electronic VDO tacho according to the cct diagram on the Westfield-World website and it seems to be working fine.  That had the sender running from the -ve side of the coil and +ve and earth being a switched power supply.

Have you checked that you've got a 12v supply at the guage and a good earth?

I checked all the connections, seemed fine. I tried using a signal generator to whack a sibnewave into the tacho, it reacted eventually and was reasonably smooth above around 450rpm but kept sticking at 450 and below. I think it is pooped! :(

Now got to try and find a replacement without needing a bank loan!

Thanks Jon. I tried it again yesterday and it seems to rev OK now but a little 'reluctant around 400-500rpm, and when the engine stops it seems to stick around the 450 mark until you give it a couple of taps. I might just whip the case off and see if there's anything stupid going on inside.

Trouble is, until i can get the car set up to run at tickover (still needing air filter, hopefully grin-a-lot will be able to help there), I can't give it a good test. Once I get that sorted then maybe I can check it better.
