Hi there,

I was thinking of making my own exhaust header out of stainless and while I do have experience of mig welding ive never touched a tig so am looking for some kind soul who may have a tig welder if I could have a play before I spend a load of dosh lol

Ive done mig/tig/gas and arc, mind you a few years back now!!!
MIG as you know is about getting the setting right on the wire feed.
TIG you need to have that gentle feed in of the wire whilst holding the torch in the other hand. It's an art but hopefully you will crack it and not the weld  ;D ;D
As you know a good TIG unit is not cheap either.

Yeh not sure if ill be good enough to make a good enough job but I should be able to mock it up and cut and tack it together enough to get it to a place to just run around and finish the final welds .... Well that's what I'm thinking anyway

Hi there, Tig welding is not that hard if you wont to try one, I have a Tig depends where you live.

I went to buy my own tig welding set as I am very good at Gas, Stick and Mig. Discussing this with the guy's at the gas supplier in Kingswood who also sell the sets, they advised me against getting one for the amount of pure tig I need.

To buy a set you can go Chinese and it may well last, or go quality but the price reflects that. Their advice (even though they sold a cheap one ) was you need to spend around a grand for a good one. Then on top of that you need the the rods and then the pure argon to go with it, at the time only BOC did pure argon.

They told me most welders charge about £2-£5 per inch which seemed a bit high but when compared with laying out the dosh makes sense.

I had some done at Ships in Old sodbury for a few pounds and was a thing of beauty. They suggested for bigger jobs contact the local tech as they need jobs for students to do, a bit more messy but much cheaper.
