Thanks to Bri, the idea of converting from what I think is a 2000e gearbox to a type 9.  With the revs at 50mph at about 4500rpm I'm thinking a cruising gear might be a nice addition and save a little fuel.

I've not done a g/b swap before so after some advice on what some of the hidden costs might be? I can see a new g/b, bell housing and propshalf will be required but anything else?

you get the box mate and I'll give you a hand.  ;D

Only thing you may have to change is the clutch plate, depending on the splines on your old un. I have a huge engine crane here as well.  ;D

The previous owner of my car did this for the same reasons as you.
He had to move the cross member for the mounting as the box is longer.
The longer box also moves the gear lever back about a bit.

hi,

find out exactly what your existing box is - it'll make a lot of difference to the hassle & cost.  is it cable or hydraulic clutch operation?  if it's cable it's probably a 4-speed Cortina box - hydraulic 2000E.

if it's a 2000E you'll need a new clutch friction plate, gearbox mount relocation, speedo cable, clutch operation & propshaft end.  on the plus side the 2000E box is worth a few bob.

if it's a Cortina box pretty much everything will carry over except the propshaft will be too long - there's a good place near me in Bristol that can do that.  the old 4-speed is worth a couple of pints.

should have started with this question really - what engine is it behind?  that can make a big difference to which bellhousing & starter motor you need.
