Best Way to connect Zetec ECU to sierra ignition?

Going to use a standard ecu to start with. Whats the best loom for connecting up as I've none at the moment, and should i change the ignition on my steering coloumn

If it were me I would use a Zetec loom, ignition switch, and ECU as all the connector pin connections would be correct and cables the right colours.

With my unusual choice of the 1.7 Zetec do you think these would be easy to find? I have the ecu and the corresponding chip for the key....

The 1.7 Zetec seems a standard engine for the Puma, but not a lot else from what I can see.

Judging by that, I think you are narrowing your supply somewhat?

Do you have a doner car right now? And why that choice of engine?

   Yeah that sright the only car the engine ever was put in is the ford Puma. It has huge weight advantages over the Zetec. The exhaust will exit the drivers side of the car (a preference for me). The engine was designed top to bottom by yamaha for ford. It runs a similar system to a V-Tec in relation to the cams, all alloy. many advantages. I've even got a bell housing to connect the engine to the type 9 gearbox sorted out as its the only ford engine that has the unique shape, so have an alloy bell housing thats been made for me now. The engine can easily be tuned to 200bhp+ from its standard 130bhp form. I'm not sure how you build a loom, could do this but not sure how to source the connections? Its one of the few things I'm stumped on with this engine. I've managed to overcome most of the problems its thrown up so far....
   Another reason for picking this engine was to try and break the mould and push the boundaries slightly. i've researched parts which are fairly easy to get hold of. There are even specialist tuning compaines for this engine and they aren't too expensive. Weight difference between between the 2.0 Zetec and the 1.7 Zetec SE is around 125Kg (Zetec) to 80Kg (Zetec SE) to put the large difference into perspective

Looks like you've done your homework there, actually sounds quite impressive.

Now all you have to do is source a good engine. Plenty of breakers around, a Puma should come up somewhere. If so perhaps you could buy the whole car and sell of parts you dont need once you have taken out all the electrical stuff you do need.

Its possible you could get your money back and more :)

When looking for more hard to come by parts, (ie. the bonnet scoop for my Locost) I started using a salvage search on Ebay. Just tried 'Puma breaking' and there are quite a few out there. You just give them a call and see if they have that part still in the car.

Thanks for that guys. Def done the research on the engine, also already purchased the engine as I managed to buy a nice low mileage example for what I felt was a good price. The bell housing wasn't too bad. I found 1 company (and only 1) that already made a bell housing. Also save quite a bit of weight on the bell housing as its now alloy.

There is an article in Total Kit Car mag Jan/Feb edition on Ford engines including this one. More of a comparison of the Ford range of engines but suspect this may spark a bit more interest in this engine.

I guess the review of this engine was good then? I'm going to run a standard ecu to start with, but will upgrade to custom ecu where I can control which cam to use and when

As it happens I have much of what you need!

I was going down the lines of a Zetec-SE and have the 1.6 with a Puma inlet manifold and a alloy bell housing all ready to go.

For the ECU I have a megasquirt and a modified ZetecSE engine harness ready to fit.

I have now changed my mind as the Pinto I have is proving reliable and I have a spare anyway.
