Track Day Crashes

Found this on You Tube, its amazing how many of these crashes are at Castle Combe.  In every case the drivers appear to have had no instruction and are going far too fast for their ability.  Shows the importance of proper instruction and of getting help from fellow club members before venturing out on track for the first time. 

For those that are experienced track day drivers, the lines of these idiots will provide some amusing entertainments.  Enjoy.... sound on for best effects.

As you say, lack of experience with a large dose of over-enthusiasm in a lot of those. Not just too fast for the corner but WAYYYY too fast!  :o
Combe IS a dangerous track, so little run off and that crest coming into quarry... but they DO warn you and if you don't get instruction while you learn the track you're just asking for trouble.
I find its usually the japfest or similar events where you only get one 15 min slot and the muppets just go for it...
Personally I only go to open pitlane trackdays or sessioned with similar spec'd cars / ability to avoid the carnage.

Combe is bad for crashes but at the end of the day if you drive with in your limits all should (apart from the idiots on track) be ok..

Indeed you SHOULD be OK but keep an eye on your mirrors for some muppet who's forgotten where the brakes are...

Saddest crash comes at 2:27... A kitcar driver has spun at Quarry and seems OK, car completely intact :) but hang on... what's that noise???  :o  :'(

Mind you I think you will find that most of those are by drivers who have done a few track days.....

Worse one ive seen is when Chris Norris lost it on camp and ended up in the catch fence.. Was nasty..

Exactly why I don't want to put my Cob on a track.

I trust you guys because you know what you are doing, and are sensible but it would be just my luck to have some dick in a Hot hatch wreck my car.

Some scary crashes there youd be gutted if you totaled your car on a track day especially if its youre daily tintop ahhhh

You would be fine if you came to a well organised day. Get a mate/instructor to take you round and you would love it. Your car would be great to drive round a track. ;D

Combe deserves respect but it is an amazing track to drive.

This brings me nicely on to a BKCC/BPMC dedicated track day in July 2012 with club members only and no idiots.  I have already had provisional discussions with BPMC about the prospect of the 2 clubs hiring Llandow for our exclusive use.  We will also be looking into hiring an ARDS qualified instructor who will give tuition throughout the day all included in the price.  The places will be limited to 30 with only 10 on track at any one time.

Full details will be announced at our AGM in Feb whch will also include the "Black Awards" which so many of you have worked hard to achieve.  Everything will be announced on the forum in due course so please keep logging on regularly.

Agreed, I wouldn't let a track day accident video put anyone off trying a track day, most of the Combe accidents were caused by people simply driving too fast or out of their depths. Accidents are very rare anyway.

A well run track day does not allow idiots on the track and if anybody is observed to be doing something stupid they are soon removed.

Not only that but good tuition is usually available and highly recommended, I recently attended a BHP organised trackday at Combe and it was raining, most will tell you that Combe and rain dont mix to the extent of not even going out on track at all. I was very apprehensive but after some tuition felt brave enough to venture out, yes it was slippery and there were a few wheel-spins going on, but my tuition was invaluable in learning the correct lines and driving smooth. I went out a few times and had a great time. Drove there and home again.

And the real fun after some tuition on a wet combe. Dave H and I having a great laugh.


An airfield day however is a great introduction, absolutely nothing to crash into and tons of run off.

If I can do it, anyone can. Hope to see some of you on track next year, after all its where some kit car really excel. Why not give it a try, its a great club meet as well.

Bin round Combe once in the rain (hammering down....like driving in a river!),  Lasted 3 laps before spinning off thankfully into the inner field at the chicanes.   Certainly teaches you how to control the rear end!!

I can't wait to do my first track day and will definately be up for it and will be taking the instructor advice.
Last thing I want to do is right my car off or right somebody else's car off.
My worse fear would be by the end of the day getting over confident and forgetting all I have been instructed to do so if anyone see's me going wrong don't hesitate to tell me... thanks

Agree Dave.  If you're thinking of doing your first trackday please don't let these videos put you off.  Bumps like these are rare.  As Dave says, get a mate or an instructor to drive you around first.  That way you get a feel for what it's like out on the circuit before you're at the wheel.

I was over my son's bodyshop last week, he had a 205 gti Mi 16 track-day car in there to repair.

Poor chap had just come back from a track-day over the Christmas break.       On the day he managed to stove the front in somehow......then he spun out and managed to hit the boot and bumper, then to finish the day off, an Impreza smashed him in the side, badly damaging the door, wing and front corner! :o      Who said track days aren't dangerous and a drain on the pocket!!

That was my mate's Impreza. I was on the track in the afternoon.

Gotta keep an eye in the mirror and check for people who are faster who may want to come by.

However it is the duty of the person overtaking to do so appropriately.

Accidents will happen but if you have 3 in one day you are being a twat.

I agree with what Dave has said but there are a LOT of prats who do trackdays it seems. ::)   Do you boys who go regularly bother with trackday insurance or is it very expensive.     I bet you would be livid if some idiot slammed into your M3 Dave. ::)

Haven't really bothered with Trackday Insurance.  Premiums aren't too bad but there is usually a very large excess so you'd have to have a biggy to bother claiming.  Some kitcar insurance policies include some trackday insurance from what I've heard.

I do indeed have track day insurance however it is included in my premium. The excess is worth it for a little peace of mind.

I would indeed be upset....

However, I have done plenty of track days without insurance as the experience is fantastic. You cant drive your car like this anywhere else! ;D

I've never gone down the track day insurance route - excess has always put me off.  Seen a few incidents over the last 4 years but fortunately after 50 odd trackdays I've never had anything more than a few spins and the odd mechanical.  Guess it's down to individual choice at the end of the day.  With the right company the risk of collision with other participants (probably the biggest risk of damage outside of running out of talent yourself) is minimal. 

If anyone here is contemplating a first trackday - dont be put off by the scaremongering.  You cannot go wrong with a Motorsport Events airfield day at Hullavington or Abingdon.  Great value and very well run.  No Keevil dates for 2012 yet and they've lost Colerne as a venue.  BHP are also very good - they seem to attract the non-holligan element (although David H does attend occasionally  :D).

I will be doing my first track day this year. I have been up grading oil, coolant & Just the brake fluid & pads to do.
So reading this has definitely been helpful.

I must say, BHP do a cracking day. Nice fellas that do appreciate what its about. As they let me on the track with my shell suit on, I cant complain.

Abingdon is a brilliant place to go. No barriers, loads of run off, fast well laid out track. My favourite airfield day for sure. But remember chaps.... its NOT a drift day. :D

2nd on the scaremongering. Take it easy and relax at your first day and the rest will come.

I'm booking a few and will post up a few in the next few days....

Luckily never had any crashed. a few slides and some fun at castle come in torrential rain. i was out on track like a Sunday slow driver and had the music on and left the track back in to the pits i got so board..

Been on some good track day with this bunch..
I'm addicted and so is my dad now...
